Miles Cartwright scored 21 points and Pennsylvania rallied from a 22-point first-half deficit to beat Maryland-Baltimore County 80-75 Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Two steals by Fran Dougherty sparked a 13-2 second-half run, including seven points by Cartwright, that brought the Quakers within a point, 55-54.

After a tip by Cameron Gunter gave Penn a 58-57 lead with 9:26 remaining, Cartwright hit a jumper and a 3-pointer for a 63-57 lead, and two baskets and a free throw by Henry Brooks stretched it to 68-57.

Ryan Cook scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the way for the Retrievers, who got 40 first-half shots, making half, while Penn managed just 9 of 17 (52.9 percent). Cook scored five points and Brett Roseboro four during a 15-0 run that gave UMBC a 42-20 advantage with 5:08 left before halftime.
