DAYTON, Ohio (AP) With two close wins in daunting circumstances, the Flyers have turned Dayton into more than just a starting point for the NCAA tournament.
Dayton has reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in 30 years, knocking off heavyweights Ohio State and Syracuse. Several hundred students waited for the team to get home in the early morning hours for an impromptu celebration.
The tournament has opened in Dayton for the last 14 years with play-in games and the First Four. Then, it would move on, leaving the Flyers out of the conversation most years.
Coach Archie Miller has them back in national prominence in his third season. He got a contract extension that was announced Monday.
The 11th-seeded Flyers will play No. 10 Stanford in Memphis, Tenn., on Thursday.
