Signs with Nashville
Schmitt has signed with Nashville out of free agency, accoridng to his new club.
Impact
Schmitt has found a new club after exiting Houston last campaign, as the defender has signed with Nashville. This comes after starting in four of his 17 appearances last campaign, with the defender set to be an option for the club for the first time May 21. He will likely see more of a rotational role with his new club, seeing most of his time off the bench.

Negotiating a return
Schmitt is still negotiating a return to Houston on a new contract, the club announced.
Impact
Schmitt is hoping to return to Houston as his role grew slightly in 2024. He still didn't play any sort of major minutes though, with just 427 total minutes across 17 appearances (four starts.) The defender still hasn't matched his final season in Salt Lake, though Houston have seemingly valued him as a depth option.

ROTOWIRE
Critical penalty miss
Schmitt had one cross (zero accurate) in Sunday's 1-1 (7-6) penalty shootout loss versus Seattle Sounders FC.
Impact
Schmitt was subbed into the match for the final minute of regular time, presumably with the idea of having the player available for the then impending penalty shootout. Houston's manager planned the substitution skillfully, but players decide games. In this case, Schmitt was unable to rise to the occasion. He was stonewalled by Seattle's keeper and Houston was eliminated from the 2024 MLS playoffs. Schmitt made his most ever MLS appearances in a single season in 2024 with 17, though he started on just four of those occasions.

Whips in five crosses

Impact
Schmitt reclaimed his starting spot Saturday after serving off the bench in the club's past seven games, going unused in five of those games. He saw a pretty good performance in his return, registering two shots, two chances created and a season-high of five crosses. He will hope to remain in this spot, although he will likely drop to the bench once Griffin Dorsey (suspension) and Franco Escobar (lower body) return.

No longer injured
Schmitt (knee) has recovered from his injury after making the starting XI in Tuesday's Concacaf Champions Cup 2-1 loss to St. Louis.
Impact
Schmitt will now be an option for the first game of the season against Kansas City on Saturday, having finally recovered from a knee issue that caused him to miss almost all of last season. The defender should now be expected to start on opening day, as he started in all five contests when available in the previous campaign and was starting in his first game back Tuesday. He will now hope to avoid another long absence due to an injury, as he is yet to serve a full season as a regular starter and is in line for that this campaign.

Back on field
Schmitt (knee) has been playing with Houston during preseason as he is close to returning to the pitch, he said on the Bayou City Soccer podcast.
Impact
Schmitt said he is very close to returning, however is not expected to be available right away for the home opener against Sporting Kansas City. He missed almost the entire 2023 season with ACL surgery as he looks to return to full form for the new campaign. Once Schmitt is back, he is set to compete for the starting role with Franco Escobar.

Trains during preseason
Schmitt (knee) was involved in preseason training with the club ahead of their season opener against Sporting Kansas City on Feb. 24.
Impact
Schmitt ended last season on the injury report after undergoing ACL surgery in May but appears to be close to a return heading into the 2024 campaign, as he trained with the club during preseason sessions. With three weeks until their first match, he could be an option if all goes completely right, but they may not want to rush the player back into the team after such a serious injury. He was a regular starter in the five matches he was available for to start the season last year and will hope to return to that spot once he is healthy.

Back for 2024
Schmitt (knee) had his option for 2024 picked up, Houston announced.
Impact
Schmitt's season ended on the sideline with an ACL surgery. The defender's option was picked up a good sign that the club sees something in his future that will keep him as part of the team. Before the injury Schmitt started all five matches he appeared in.

Undergoes ACL surgery
Schmitt will likely miss the rest of the season after undergoing successful ACL surgery, per his social media.
Impact
Schmitt suffered the knee injury last month against San Jose and underwent successful surgery to repair the torn ACL. It's unfortunate for the defender, who had made five straight starts during his first season with the team. Franco Escobar will take over the starting left back position for the rest of the year.

Schmitt registered three tackles (one won), two crosses (one accurate) and one chance created in Sunday's 1-0 win over New York City FC.

Scores goal
Schmitt scored one goal to go with two shots (one on goal), three crosses (zero accurate) and two chances created in Sunday's defeat against FC Cincinnati.
Impact
Schmitt was the player who scored Houston's lone goal at Cincinnati on Sunday. Somewhat like how he was at Real Salt Lake, Schmitt is expected to be a serviceable goal contributor as a member of the Dynamo.
