Transfers to Portland
Hernandez has been acquired by Portland Timbers as a summer signing from Atlanta United, the club announced Wednesday.
Impact
Hernandez had been limited in a substitute role since recovering from an abdomen injury in May, and this switch should allow him to see more opportunities for the remainder of the season. He'll likely take a spot in the right-back contention with Eric Miller while Brandon Bye (knee) and Juan David Mosquera (ankle) remain sidelined. The Venezuelan defender could provide some attacking projection, although he's more consistently reliable for clearance and tackle numbers when given meaningful playing time.

Off injury report
Hernandez (abdomen) is fit to play after overcoming his injury, according to the club's managing editor Adam Jasper.
Impact
Hernandez will be an option for upcoming contests, although it's unclear if he'll play a significant role given that he had stayed on the bench for most of the campaign even before his injury. Thus, he may serve as a backup right-back behind current starter Tomas Jacob in the short term.

Doubtful with abdomen concern
Hernandez was listed as questionable for Saturday's match against LA Galaxy as he deals with an abdominal injury, per the MLS Player Status Report.
Impact
Hernandez is a right-back who brings energy and defensive reliability from the flank, and an abdominal issue, which could range from a minor strain to something more significant, puts his participation at risk for upcoming action. His questionable status adds a third uncertain or unavailable player for Atlanta ahead of the week 12 match, creating real lineup uncertainty for the club. However, Tomas Jacob may continue to fill in at right-back.

Whips in three crosses
Hernandez registered three crosses (zero accurate) and two chances created in Saturday's 2-0 loss to FC Cincinnati.
Impact
Hernandez got the start at right-back to start the season, playing the full 90. He would see some decent two-way work, with three crosses in the attack to go along with two tackles, two interpcetions and two clearances in the defense. He is competing for a starting spot now, although that could change in the coming games, with Elias Baez fighting for time as well.

Re-signs with Atlanta
Hernandez has re-signed with Atlanta for the 2026 season, according to his club.
Impact
Hernandez is signing a new contract with Atlanta to remain with the club for a further season, with an option for a further season. The defender started in 16 of his 21 appearances last season, recording one goal and one assist, not seeing much starting time until the end of the season. That said, with Brooks Lennon leaving the club, a right-back spot is open for the club, with Matt Edwards and Hernandez likely to compete for time in that spot, along with any new signings.

Set for international duty
Hernandez is out for Saturday's match against Miami after being called up by the Venezuelan national team.
Impact
Hernandez will be absent for the penultimate match of the season Saturday, not an option after he was called up for some international friendlies. This is a tough loss for the club, missing their starting right-back, with Brooks Lennon (Achilles) as their hopeful replacement. He will then look to be an option for their season finale against D.C. United on Oct. 18.

Generates three crosses
Hernandez had three crosses (zero accurate) and four tackles in Sunday's 1-0 defeat against Los Angeles Football Club.
Impact
Hernandez saw a decent two-way effort Sunday, with the defender starting yet again at right-back. He would record three crosses in the attack for his most in a game since Aug. 17, then adding two interceptions, two clearances and four tackles in the defense. He should remain in the starting role as the club enters the final stage of the season.

Hernandez had his option for the 2025 declined as he is currently under negotiations on new deal.
