Each of Espinoza's last nine league appearances have come off the bench and he hasn't started an MLS match since April. He's turned into a backup midfielder ever since Nemanja Radoja (hamstring) and Gadi Kinda returned to fitness.

Extends contract with SKC
Espinoza signed a one-year contract extension with Sporting KC on Friday. There's an option to extend the deal through 2024 as well.
Impact
Espinoza is an important veteran piece to keep around as long as they can after scoring twice in 30 appearances (25 starts) in 2022. If his team can get reliable goals elsewhere, Espinoza will play his part to back them up.

Records assist in win
Espinoza took a shot on target and assisted a goal in Saturday's 4-2 victory against the Galaxy. He also made a clearance and won one of one tackles in the match.
Impact
Espinoza played well on both sides of the ball Saturday, setting up a lovely opening goal for Erik Thommy as his side upset Los Angeles to end a three-game losing streak. Espinoza has started just four of 10 MLS matches in midfield since the June international break, going the full 90 minutes just once in that span.

Scores rare goal
Espinoza scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal) and one chance created in Saturday's 2-1 victory versus CF Montreal.
Impact
Espinoza finally found his way back onto the score sheet, his first goal since early March. The defensive midfielder simply hasn't found his way into the first team as consistently as he would like, with his start Saturday coming after three matches on the bench. When starting Espinoza has some upside filling the stat-sheet, though his place in the starting XI has been less consistent than it was in 2021. He also picked up his eighth booking of the season on Saturday, meaning he will be suspended for Wednesday's clash against Minnesota United.

Seven crosses in loss
Espinoza recorded seven crosses and created three chances in Saturday's 1-0 loss to Vancouver.
Impact
Espinoza showed he was a pure playmaker in Saturday's match creating three chances and also delivering seven effective crosses. With Kansas City at the bottom of the table, it is likely Espinoza will need to increase his success on the offense in order to bring his squad to the playoffs.

Suspended against Colorado
Espinoza will miss Wednesday's clash against the Rapids with a suspension for yellow card accumulation.
Impact
Espinoza picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in last weekend's defeat to Portland, meaning he will be suspended for Wednesday's match. He has started in 11 of his side's 12 MLS games this season, but Marinos Tzionis could replace him against Colorado, or Cameron Duke is another option if Graham Zusi (quadriceps) is fit enough to return to right back.

Takes three shots in loss
Espinoza had three shots (two on target) and created one chance during Saturday's 1-0 loss against Vancouver.
Impact
Espinoza was brought at halftime, subbing in for Oriol Rosell, and was still one of SKC's few bright spots here, being involved on several dangerous plays and attempting a team-high three shots. The midfielder will hope this showing helps him to be back in the starting XI for next Saturday's home match against Nashville.

Scores once in loss
Espinoza had one goal on two shots (one off target), one tackle, two interceptions, two fouls and sustained two fouls in the 3-1 loss to the Chicago Fire on Saturday.
Impact
Though his side struggled most of the match, Espinoza was the only source of hope, scoring his squad's only goal with an assist from Felipe Hernandez. This was the midfielder's first goal of the season, and his is more renowned for his defensive play. Hopefully he can bring a strong effort at both ends of the pitch against Real Salt Lake.
