INJURIES

Beaten seven times Sunday Luukkonen stopped 21 of 28 shots in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Lightning.
Impact This is clearly an outing that didn't favor Luukkonen's recent strong run of play, but at least he extended his winning streak to four games. He had allowed two or fewer goals in each of his previous three wins, and the 27-year-old will aim to bounce back in his next start. That said, the Sabres have been alternating the workload between the posts of late, so it wouldn't be surprising if Alex Lyon gets the nod against the Sharks on Tuesday.

Defending crease Sunday Luukkonen will protect the home net against Tampa Bay on Sunday, per Heather Engel of NHL.com.
Impact Luukkonen will get the second half of Buffalo's back-to-back after Alex Lyon played in Saturday's 3-2 win over Nashville. The 26-year-old Luukkonen has stopped 90 of the 94 shots he has faced during his three-game winning streak. He has a 14-7-2 record this campaign with a 2.55 GAA and a .910 save percentage across 24 appearances. Tampa Bay sits fifth in the league with 3.48 goals per game this season.

Impact Bryan Rust spoiled his shutout bid with a shorthanded goal in the first period, but otherwise Luukkonen had little trouble with Pittsburgh's offense. The 26-year-old netminder has won four straight decisions dating back to Jan. 22, and on the season he's 14-7-2 over 24 outings with a 2.55 GAA and .910 save percentage.

In goal Thursday versus Pittsburgh Luukkonen will guard the road goal versus the Penguins on Thursday, Heather Engel of NHL.com reports.
Impact Luukkonen has won his last two outings, giving up just three goals on 66 shots in those games. The 26-year-old has been splitting time with Alex Lyon, who is also on a roll. Luukkonen will face a team that has 12 goals over four games since the Olympic break.

Second win since Olympic break Luukkonen made 36 saves in a 6-2 win over the Lightning on Saturday.
Impact UPL has won two games since the break, and he's allowed just three goals in that span. His record improves to 13-7-2 with a 2.62 GAA and .908 save percentage. Alex Lyon allowed just two goals in a win over the Panthers on Friday night, so watch for the team to continue to alternate the goalies going forward. That makes Luukkonen a great daily play, but a touch of a risk in weeklies simply because of games played.

Sabres beat the Lightning 6-2 for their 3rd straight victory

Josh Norris scored twice, Rasmus Dahlin had a goal and two assists and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 on Saturday night for their third straight victory

Tending twine Saturday Luukkonen will guard the road goal versus the Lightning on Saturday, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports.
Impact This will be a tough matchup, as the Lightning are one of the league's top teams. Luukkonen won his first start coming out of the Olympic break, which was also his return from a lower-body injury. He stopped 27 of 28 shots in his win over the Devils on Wednesday. Luukkonen will need to stay sharp between the pipes to maintain a timeshare with Alex Lyon.

Nabs win coming out of break Luukkonen made 27 saves in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Devils.
Impact Timo Meier spoiled Luukkonen's shutout bid late in the third period with New Jersey's net empty, as he jammed home a rebound during a scrum in front of the Buffalo crease, but otherwise the 26-year-old was sharp as the NHL schedule resumed following the Olympic break. Luukkonen has just one regulation loss in his last eight outings dating back to Jan. 6, going 5-1-1 over that stretch with a 2.78 GAA and .912 save percentage.

Starting versus Devils Luukkonen will start on the road versus the Devils on Wednesday, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.
Impact Luukkonen was activated from injured reserve and will suit up Wednesday after his lower-body injury cost him the opportunity to represent Finland at the Olympics. The 26-year-old goalie went 4-2-1 over eight games in January, but he had a mediocre 3.21 GAA and .901 save percentage in those contests.
FEBRUARY 25 • ROTOWIRE
In contention Wednesday Luukkonen (lower body) will be an option for Wednesday's road clash with the Devils, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports.
Impact Head coach Lindy Ruff wouldn't go so far as to confirm that Luukkonen will get the starting nod, but he will at least be available to serve as the backup to Alex Lyon if nothing else. In his last 10 appearances, the Finnish backstop is sporting a 6-2-1 record, 2.73 GAA and .912 save percentage. The Sabres' upcoming three-game road trip includes a back-to-back, so fantasy managers can expect him to feature sooner rather than later.

Will miss Olympics Luukkonen (lower body) will not be joining Finland for the 2026 Winter Olympics, the Sabres announced Tuesday.
Impact Luukkonen has missed the Sabres' last three games due to his lower-body injury and now figures to be sidelined for the next two games in the lead-up to the Olympic break. If the injury lingers beyond the break, Alex Lyon figures to see the bulk of the workload, while Joonas Korpisalo was added to the Finnish roster.
FEBRUARY 3 • ROTOWIRE
Moved to injured reserve Luukkonen (lower body) was shifted to injured reserve Monday, per the NHL media site.
Impact Luukkonen was already expected to be out until after the Olympic break, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to see the team utilizing IR to get the extra roster spot. In a corresponding move, defenseman Jacob Bryson (upper body) was removed from injured reserve ahead of Monday's game versus the Panthers.
FEBRUARY 2 • ROTOWIRE
Set for one-week absence Luukkonen (lower body) is expected to miss about a week, according to head coach Lindy Ruff, Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reports Thursday.
Impact Luukkonen could miss the Olympics with Finland, though no determination has been made on his availability. Given his potential timeline, Luukkonen may be out of action until the final game before the break, a Feb. 5 home clash with the Penguins. In the meantime, Alex Lyon should see the bulk of the workload with Colten Ellis available as needed.

Dahlin scores first NHL hat trick to lead Sabres to 7-4 win over Maple Leafs

Departs Tuesday's game Luukkonen (lower body) won't return to Tuesday's game versus the Maple Leafs.
Impact Luukkonen allowed two goals on five shots in 12:14 of ice time and didn't look comfortable as he left the ice. The goalie was replaced by Colten Ellis, who would likely slot into the backup role behind Alex Lyon if Luukkonen misses time. The Sabres' next game is Thursday at home versus the Kings.
JANUARY 28 • ROTOWIRE
Starting in Toronto Luukkonen will defend the road net against the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, according to Rachel Lenzi of The Buffalo News.
Impact Luukkonen is coming off a 32-save effort in Thursday's 4-2 win over Montreal. He has gone 11-7-2 this campaign with a 2.66 GAA and a .905 save percentage through 20 appearances. Toronto ranks 11th in the league with 3.27 goals per game this season.

Third win in last five starts Luukkonen made 32 saves in a 4-2 win over the Canadiens on Thursday.
Impact Luukkonen is 3-1-1 in his last five starts and 6-2-1 in nine games since Christmas. He allowed two or fewer goals in five of those nine starts. UPL has an 11-7-2 record with a 2.66 GAA and .905 save percentage in 19 starts this season. He was very good Thursday, which is a good sign now that the sizzling Alex Lyon is back in the fold after his injury absence. The Sabres need to keep their proverbial foot to the floor, so we expect them to choose the hottest glove hand on any given day.
