Impact Of the six Penguins on waivers Thursday, Heinen might be the most surprising, considering he was part of the Marcus Pettersson trade last year. In his 28 appearances for Pittsburgh following the trade, the veteran winger notched three goals and eight helpers while averaging 12:32 of ice time. Given his wealth of NHL experience, there could be plenty of clubs willing to give Heinen a look. If he does clear, Heinen figures to link up with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

Joona Koppanen - Placed on waivers by team Koppanen was designated for waivers by the Penguins on Thursday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Impact Koppanen logged 11 NHL games for the Penguins last year in which he generated one goal, 10 shots and 40 hits while averaging 13:23 of ice time. The 27-year-old winger may not start the year with Pittsburgh, but he should be on the short list of potential call-ups throughout the 2025-26 campaign. Still, even if he does join the big club at some point, Koppanen is unlikely to see enough ice time to provide much in the way of fantasy value.

Valtteri Puustinen - On waivers Puustinen was placed on waivers by Pittsburgh on Thursday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Impact Puustinen appears to have been edged out for a roster spot by the likes of Avery Hayes, Tristan Broz and Filip Hallander, all of whom remain on the Penguins' roster for the time being. Who makes the Opening Night roster will likely become clearer after the team's preseason finale versus the Sabres on Friday, but Puustinen is not part of that group, as evidenced by his demotion.

Sebastian Aho - Placed on waivers Aho landed on the waiver wire Thursday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Impact Aho was facing an uphill battle to secure a spot on the Opening Night roster, so his placement on waivers shouldn't come as a surprise. Given the team's up-and-coming youngsters on the blue line, including Owen Pickering and Harrison Brunicke, the 29-year-old Aho is unlikely to see much ice time in the NHL this year.

Philip Kemp - Hits waiver wire Kemp was waived by the Penguins on Thursday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Impact Kemp was never going to make the Opening Night roster for the Penguins, especially given the emergence of Harrison Brunicke. For his part, the 26-year-old Kemp has logged just one NHL appearance back in 2023-24 when he was with the Oilers. Look for Kemp to feature exclusively for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, making him a relative non-factor in fantasy contests.

Filip Larsson - On waivers Thursday Larsson was placed on waivers by the Penguins on Thursday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
Impact Larsson probably sits fifth on the Penguins' goaltending depth chart behind both Joel Blomqvist (lower body) and Sergei Murashov. Even with Blomqvist dealing with an injury, Larsson could find himself down with ECHL Wheeling for the upcoming campaign. Given how far away Larsson is from the NHL, he figures to be a non-factor in fantasy contests.

Impact Rust departed Wednesday's practice session early, and his exit was apparently due to his injury that will force him to miss multiple weeks. The 33-year-old will be unavailable for at least the first week of the regular season, and he'll presumably be re-evaluated around the end of his two-week return timetable. Rust made 71 regular-season appearances for Pittsburgh last year and racked up 31 goals, 34 assists, 62 hits, 54 blocked shots and 18 PIM while averaging 19:45 of ice time.
