The Leo Plan: Why are the Ducks limiting Leo Carlsson's games, and could other teams try it?
Carlsson, the No. 2 pick in this year's draft, already has been scratched from four games — and not because of poor play.

Adds power-play assist
Carlsson notched a power-play assist, three shots on goal and two hits in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Canadiens.
Impact
Carlsson played in consecutive games for the first time in 10 days, as he's sat out twice over the last five contests as part of his workload management plan. The 18-year-old set up Mason McTavish on a second-period power-play marker. Carlsson continues to hold his down with nine points (four on the power play), 29 shots on net, eight hits and a minus-3 rating over 13 appearances. The Ducks don't have a back-to-back set for the rest of the month, but it's still possible he could be scratched again in that span given the unpredictability of when he gets a game off.

Healthy scratch Friday
Carlsson will sit out Friday's game versus Florida as a healthy scratch, Derek Lee of The Sporting Tribune reports.
Impact
The Ducks are managing Carlsson's games this season as they do not want the 18-year-old to wear down as the season progresses. Carlsson was selected second overall in the June Draft and has six goals and eight points in just 11 games this season. He should return to his spot on the top line Sunday versus St. Louis.

Deals power-play helper
Carlsson recorded a power-play assist and three shots on goal in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Sharks.
Impact
Carlsson has played in eight straight games, racking up all but one of his eight points this season in that span. The 18-year-old is supposedly on a workload limit in the first half of the campaign, though it hasn't popped up lately. In addition to his offense, Carlsson has 23 shots on net and a minus-1 rating through 10 appearances. The Ducks have four games over the next seven days, so it's possible he could sit out one or more of those contests.

Nets first career hat trick
Carlsson recorded a hat trick in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Flyers.
Impact
Carlsson scored twice on the power play and once at even strength to earn his first hat trick. He's the youngest Duck to ever pull off the feat. The 18-year-old center has hit the ground running with six goals and one assist over nine contests, and he's added 20 shots on net, five hits, four blocked shots and four PIM. It's unclear if he'll play Sunday versus the Sharks due to his workload management plan in the first half of the season, but Carlsson's entry-level deal will officially activate with his next appearance.

Late heroics against Bruins
Carlsson produced a goal and an assist in Thursday's 4-3 overtime win over the Bruins.
Impact
The rookie sparked a comeback from a 3-1 deficit by beating Linus Ullmark with just under two minutes left in the third period before setting up Mason McTavish for the OT winner. Carlsson is still only 18 years old and is being eased into the rigors of an NHL campaign after being the second overall pick in the 2023 Draft, but he's been impressive when he's been on the ice, collecting two goals and three points in three games with nine shots on goal, three hits and a plus-4 rating.

Will occasionally be scratched
Carlsson will not suit up every game over the first half of the season, Eric Stephens of The Athletic reports.
Impact
General manager Pat Verbeek has a plan for Carlsson's development, which includes occasional scratches early in the season. The intent is to ease him into the NHL in a year that likely won't see the Ducks be competitive. Carlsson is expected to ramp up into the second half of the year, and he'll probably be an everyday player over the last two or three months. His first planned scratch is Sunday versus the Bruins.

Scores in NHL debut
Carlsson contributed a goal in a 3-2 loss to Dallas on Thursday.
Impact
Carlsson, who was making his NHL debut, also finished with a plus-2 rating and two shots in 19:00 of ice time. He was getting a chance to play on the first line alongside Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry, which is a spot typically occupied by Adam Henrique, who was unavailable due to an illness. If Henrique is able to return for Saturday's contest versus Arizona, Carlsson may lose that first-line role, but the 18-year-old rookie should remain in the top six either way.

Debuting Thursday
Carlsson (lower body) will be activated from season-opening injured reserve to make his NHL debut Thursday versus the Stars.
Impact
Carlsson has missed the Ducks' first two games after sustaining an injury in practice before the start of the season. The 18-year-old was selected second overall in this year's draft. He'll likely slot into a middle-six role and receive power-play time from the start as the Ducks look to get him acclimated to the NHL.
