Considered week-to-week Head coach Rick Bowness said Thursday that Severson (shoulder) is considered week-to-week, Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers reports.

Impact Severson had already been ruled out for the Blue Jackets' first two regular-season games, and he was placed on non-roster injured reserve Thursday. Given his initial return timetable, the earliest the 32-year-old would be able to return would be Oct. 9 against Pittsburgh, but Thursday's update suggests that the Blue Jackets aren't yet certain about when Severson could be back in action. Severson recorded eight goals, 24 assists, 86 blocked shots, 45 PIM and 39 hits while averaging 21:04 of ice time across 71 regular-season appearances last year.

Set to miss first two regular-season games Head coach Rick Bowness said Monday that he expects Severson (shoulder) to miss at least the first two games of the regular season, Brian Hedger of The Columbus Dispatch reports.

Impact Severson's 2025-26 campaign ended prematurely due to shoulder surgery that he underwent in early April, and his status was uncertain for Opening Night of the 2026-27 regular season. Although the 32-year-old reportedly felt good during training camp, he's slated to miss the start of the year as he continues his recovery process. Following the Blue Jackets' first two regular-season games this year, they'll have almost a week off before facing the Penguins on Oct. 9, which could give Severson an opportunity to work with the team in practice before potentially returning to game action.

Impact Severson underwent shoulder surgery in early April that ended his 2025-26 campaign prematurely, and it's not yet clear whether he'll be ready to suit up once the 2026-27 regular season begins. Reports earlier in September suggested that the 32-year-old would be ready for Opening Night, the team continues to exercise a cautious approach. Despite not being sure whether Severson would be ready to begin the season, Browness said Wednesday that the defenseman tells him "every day" that he feels good, and the Blue Jackets have consistently increased his workload and amount of contact in practice.

Should be ready for regular season Severson (shoulder) is projected to be ready for the start of the regular season, but he isn't expected to participate in exhibition games, Mark Scheig on The Hockey Writers.

Impact While Severson is "ready to roll," according to general manager Don Waddell, the plan is to take a cautious approach with the 32-year-old defenseman's recovery. Severson had eight goals, 32 points, 45 PIM, 39 hits and 86 blocks in 71 regular-season appearances with Columbus in 2025-26. He didn't play past March 26 and underwent shoulder surgery April 2.
