Returning to action Thursday Sheary (lower body) is available for Thursday's game against the Flyers, Vince Z. Mercogliano of The Athletic reports.

Impact Sheary was placed on long-term injured reserve at the start of January, but he's been cleared to return to action in the Rangers' first game following the Olympic break. Across 37 appearances this year, he's recorded a goal, eight assists, 25 blocked shots and 17 hits while averaging 14:35 of ice time.

Impact Sheary will need to miss at least the next 10 games for the Rangers, though it could certainly be longer. With the veteran winger on the shelf, the Rangers bolstered the forward group by calling up Brett Berard, Justin Dowling and Anton Blidh.

Impact It was Sheary's first goal of the season (27 games). It was a goal scorer's goal -- Sheary cut across the offensive zone and with Cale Makar trying to lift his stick from behind, he ripped a shot over Mackenzie Blackwood's glove on the far side. The winger has never been able to re-capture the glory of his sophomore season in 2016-17 when he put up 23 goals and 53 points. With seven points this season, Sheary can safely be stored on the wire.

Impact Sheary was a healthy scratch for the previous three games after going nine contests without a point. The 33-year-old got back in due to the absence of Adam Edstrom (lower body). Impact Sheary and the Lightning agreed to terminate his contract earlier this offseason, and he had been a free agent to this point, but the Rangers will give him a chance to make their NHL club with this tryout contract. Should he make the team, he will reunite with the coach he played for, and won Stanley Cups with, when he was a Penguin in Mike Sullivan. Coming off of a season in which he played just five games at the NHL level, the onus is now on the 33-year-old to prove that he still has some gas left in the tank and can contribute to a NHL roster. If he does, it will likely be in no more than a depth role.

Headed for contract termination Sheary was placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a contract termination, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Impact Sheary, who had one year left on his contract at $2 million, has opted for a contract termination with the hopes of latching on as an NHL player next season. The 33-year-old played just five games with the Lightning this year, spending most of the season at AHL Syracuse, where he had 20 goals and 41 assists in 59 games played. It was the first time he saw time in the AHL since the 2015-16 season. Assuming he clears, he'll join the class of unrestricted free agents on July 1.
