Lars Eller's bizarre, heads-up goal highlights why the Avalanche acquired him
Eller paid attention to the details on Thursday night, and played to the whistle, which didn't surprise the Avalanche.

Alex Newhook - TOI drying up
Newhook had two penalty minutes over 5:41 of ice time in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Senators.
Impact
Newhook was in the box for interference when Ottawa scored its first goal then made a poor read that led to the Sens' second goal, which may explain the season-low TOI. The second-year forward's ice time has diminished of late. Newhook's now skating on the fourth line, which collectively played just two shifts in the third period, and been given less than 10 minutes in three of the last four games.

Alex Galchenyuk - Skating on fourth line
Galchenyuk was given nine shifts and 4:08 of ice time in Thursday's 5-4 win over Ottawa.
Impact
Galchenyuk was called up earlier this week in the wake of Artturi Lehkonen's finger injury and had a combined 7:30 TOI in back-to-back wins over Toronto and Ottawa. He's been added to the fourth line, which was given only two shifts during the third period. That unit was on the ice for two of Ottawa's three even-strength goals.

Valeri Nichushkin - Tip-in tally in win
Nichushkin scored power-play goal in Thursday's 5-4 win over Ottawa. He added two shots on net, one hit and one blocked shot to his line over 20:49 of ice time.
Impact
Nichushkin was camped net side and tipped in a Cale Makar shot for his 14th goal and second in the last three games. The forward appears to be getting his swerve back after dealing with two injuries that forced him to miss significant blocks in the schedule. Nichushkin registered 18 points (six goals, 12 assists), including five on the power play, over the last 12 contests.

Lars Eller - Goals stands upon review
Eller scored a goal on one shot over 13:33 of ice time in Thursday's 5-4 win over Ottawa.
Impact
Eller scored his first since being acquired by the Avalanche, but the tally had to withstand added scrutiny. The Senators first thought it was icing, but that was not called. Then goalie Mads Sogaard appeared to have covered the puck, but only for a brief moment, giving Eller, who did not hear a whistle, the chance to bang it into the net. The goal stood, and the Avs had a 5-2 lead. He's beginning to establish a comfort level with his new team, as head coach Jared Bednar noted to Evan Rawal of the Colorado Hockey Now following last week's win over Arizona, Eller's sixth game with Colorado.

Evan Rodrigues - Lights lamp in win
Rodrigues scored a goal on four shots with two hits and three blocked shots over 15:22 of ice time in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Senators.

Jonas Johansson - First win since 2021
Johansson made 32 saves in a 5-4 win over Ottawa on Thursday.
Impact
It was Johansson's first win since Dec. 2, 2021. He played a solid game -- two of the snipes that got past him came on the power play and another was on an even-strength breakaway. Johansson will continue to rotate through the backup role while Pavel Francouz remains out (lower body), but his starts will be limited, just like his fantasy value.

Mikko Rantanen - Six-game power-play point streak
Rantanen had a goal and two assists in a 5-4 win over the Senators on Thursday.
Impact
Rantanen scored his 45th goal of the season in the second period when he tipped a Nathan MacKinnon slapper from the point. One of his helpers came with the man advantage, stretching his power-play point streak to six games (two PPG, four PPA, and 10 points total). Rantanen has grown his offensive dominance this season -- he's on pace for his first-ever 55-goal, 100-point season.

Cale Makar - Seven-game, 13-point streak
Makar scored a goal and added an assist in Thursday's 5-4 win over Ottawa.
Impact
Makar opened the game at 2:35 of the first period with a wrister from the top of the right face-off circle. He then dished to Valeri Nichushkin who put the Avs up 2-0 on the power play at 5:00 of the same frame. Makar is on a seven-game, 13-point scoring streak (three goals, 10 assists). Twenty-seven of his 58 points this season have come with the man advantage.
