Chris Driedger - NHL News & Rumors

Let go by Vancouver Driedger was released from his professional tryout agreement by the Canucks on Monday, Rick Dhaliwal of CHEK reports.

Impact Driedger signed a PTO with the Canucks in late August, but he'll be let go by the organization before the start of the regular season. Thatcher Demko (hip) is slated to miss the first few months of the year, and the team will roll with Kevin Lankinen and Leevi Merilainen in the crease during his absence. Driedger hasn't made a regular-season appearance at the NHL level since the 2023-24 campaign and will likely have to settle for a minor-league role once again this year.

Accepts PTO Driedger accepted a professional tryout offer with the Canucks on Thursday.

Impact Driedger had a 3.05 GAA and an .897 save percentage in 23 regular-season outings with the KHL's Chelyabinsk Traktor in 2025-26. The 32-year-old netminder has a 2.45 GAA and a .917 save percentage in 67 career regular-season appearances at the NHL level, but he hasn't played in the league since 2023-24. Thatcher Demko (hip) might not be ready for the start of training camp, which could create an opening for Driedger. However, even if Demko ends up missing the start of the season, Driedger wouldn't be a lock to make the Canucks' Opening Day roster. Driedger would have to earn the No. 2 spot over Nikita Tolopilo, while Kevin Lankinen would likely begin the campaign as the No. 1 option if Demko is unavailable.

Joining hometown club Driedger was traded to the Jets from the Panthers on Thursday in exchange for Kaapo Kahkonen, per RDS.ca.

Impact Driedger was no doubt disappointed after Florida acquired Vitek Vanecek from San Jose to step into the Panthers' vacant No. 2 role, once again relegating the 30-year-old Driedger to the third spot on the depth chart. While that hasn't changed with his new club, at least he will be playing back in his native Winnipeg when he joins AHL Manitoba.

Headed back to minors Driedger was reassigned to AHL Charlotte on Thursday, Alex Baumgartner of Five Reasons Sports reports.

Impact Driedger was called up to the NHL after the Cats traded away Spencer Knight to Chicago but became expendable when a second deal brought Vitek Vanecek over from San Jose. Over the last two seasons, the 30-year-old Driedger has seen action in just two NHL games for the Kraken. Once viewed as a solid No. 2 during the 2020-21 campaign when he went 14-6-3 with three shutouts and a 2.07 GAA for Florida, Driedger has been relegated to an emergency depth option while playing in the AHL.

Once he clears, the Winnipeg native figures to switch places with Spencer Knights, who is expected to be called up in a corresponding move.
