Won't be with team to begin camp General manager Eric Tulsky announced Wednesday that Nikishin isn't currently under contract with the Hurricanes and won't be present for the start of camp Thursday.

Impact Nikishin remains a restricted free agent on the eve of training camp, and his lack of a new deal will force him to miss at least some time to begin camp. The 24-year-old made 81 regular-season appearances during his first year in the NHL last season, and he recorded 11 goals, 22 assists, 132 hits, 94 blocked shots and 33 PIM while averaging 18:11 of ice time. While it's not yet clear when he'll rejoin the team, he should have an opportunity to make an impact once again once he strikes a new agreement.

Bags apple in Game 5 win Nikishin logged an assist, two PIM and a plus-3 rating in Friday's 6-1 win over the Canadiens in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Impact Nikishin got on the scoresheet for the first time this postseason with the helper on Logan Stankoven's first-period tally. Through 11 outings, Nikishin has added eight shots on net, 14 hits, seven blocked shots and a plus-2 rating. The 24-year-old defenseman has mostly played sheltered minutes on the third pairing and has not featured on the power play since Game 3 versus the Flyers in the second round.

Impact Nikishin was considered a game-time decision, but he apparently hasn't cleared the last hurdle to return to action. The 24-year-old defenseman doesn't seem to be far off at this point, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him back at some point during this series.
