Impact With the Lions looking to keep only two quarterbacks on the active roster this year, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Boyle did not do himself many favors in this one. Not only was he generally outplayed by David Blough, but Boyle threw a bad interception early in the third quarter after airmailing an open receiver downfield in the second. However, Blough's game-losing mental error in the fourth quarter -- in which he fumbled the snap when Detroit could have run out the clock -- may have evened the score. Expect both signal callers to again see considerable snaps when the Lions take on the Colts in the second preseason game Aug. 20.

Impact Boyle's contract includes $1.75 million in guaranteed money, with another $500,000 in incentives. The 27-year-old signal-caller started three games for the Lions last season, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns in each contest and only exceeding 200 passing yards once. However, Detroit appears satisfied enough with Boyle's ability to helm the offense under emergency circumstances, and he's now positioned to reprise a familiar role as the No. 2 option behind Jared Goff unless further options are added to the quarterback room.

Impact On the surface, Boyle was beyond underwhelming as a fill-in starter during the three games that Jared Goff missed this season. The Eastern Kentucky product threw more picks than touchdowns in each appearance while clearing 200 yards once and averaging 5.6 yards per pass attempt, which would have ranked last among starting QBs. However, Goff only ranked 27th in that category with 6.6 YPA, and offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn suggested in early January that he is content with Boyle as a backup quarterback, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. While Boyle is now set to become an unrestricted free agent at year's end, it sounds like both parties may have interest in a reunion for the 2022 campaign.

Impact Boyle made his second and third starts of the season in losses to the Falcons and Seahawks in Weeks 16 and 17, respectively, after Goff missed both games, first due to a positive COVID-19 test and then due to a strained knee. Since Goff wasn't able to practice in any fashion last week on account of the injury, he may need to upgrade to full activity by Friday for the Lions to feel confident enough with his health to reinsert him into the lineup for a largely meaningless Week 18 game. If not, Boyle will be prepared to face his former team for the first time, though the "revenge game" narrative probably won't be enough to make the 27-year-old a reliable fantasy option. Through his first three starts, Boyle has averaged 175.3 passing yards, 4.6 rushing yards, 1.0 passing touchdowns and 2.0 interceptions per game.

Impact Boyle didn't do much until Detroit was down 38-7 minutes into the third quarter, which the Eastern Kentucky product had opened with an interception on the first offensive play. While Boyle was subsequently able to pad his stats with a couple of touchdowns to Amon-Ra St. Brown and offensive tackle Taylor Decker, the Lions were never really in the game thanks to a terrible defensive showing that admittedly would be hard for any quarterback to overcome. That Detroit never turned to David Blough at any point suggests Boyle will remain under center in Week 18 against Green Bay if Jared Goff (knee) is still unable to play, but we'd expect his production to be more similar to Week 16 against the Falcons (187 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception) than what Boyle was able to put up in garbage time against the Seahawks, who were decimated by injuries and COVID-related absences by the time Boyle made any noise.
