Set to practice this week
Giants head coach Joe Judge said Barkley (ankle) will take part in drills on the practice field Tuesday and Wednesday this week as the team looks to gauge where he stands in his re...
Impact
Because New York is on bye Week 10, the team won't be holding any official practice sessions, but Barkley looks like he'll stick around the facility this week and get in some work with the hope of returning to the lineup for the Giants' next game Monday, Nov. 22 at Tampa Bay. Though he's missed four consecutive games with the left ankle sprain and had his rehab program interrupted last week by a brief stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the bye week should provide sufficient time for him to shake off the injury once and for all. Devontae Booker (hip) will move back into a reserve role once Barkley officially gets the green light to play again.

Will miss another game
The Giants have ruled Barkley (ankle) out for Sunday's game against the Raiders, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Though Barkley was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday after the Giants determined a past test result for the virus was a false positive, he wasn't able to make enough progress in his recovery from a sprained left ankle to put an end to a three-game absence this weekend. Barkley noted prior to the Giants' Week 8 loss to the Chiefs that he experienced some renewed soreness and swelling in the ankle, but with the benefit of a Week 10 bye, the team is likely hoping that the star running back can make it back on the field for a Nov. 22 game in Tampa Bay in Week 11. The Giants will turn to Devontae Booker to handle a lead role out of the backfield once again this weekend versus Las Vegas.

Back from COVID list
Barkley (ankle/COVID-19 protocols) was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday and is at the Giants' team facility.
Impact
Barkley landed on the COVID list on Wednesday due to positive test result, but he's back with the team a couple days later after it was determined to be a false positive. The 24-year-old's availability for Sunday's game against Las Vegas remains firmly up in the air as he continues to nurse the ankle sprain that's sidelined him the past three games.

Impact
There were early indications Barkley's result may have been a false positive after he landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, though coach Joe Judge said Thursday he didn't anticipate the tailback being available for Sunday's matchup with the Raiders. The 24-year-old should be activated from the COVID list now that he's back with the team, but it remains to be seen if his ankle is healthy enough for him to return to game action for the first time since Week 5. Devontae Booker should continue to work as New York's lead back should Barkley be unavailable this weekend.

Trending toward absence Sunday

Impact
Barkley wasn't ready to return for Week 8 action in Kansas City due to lingering swelling and soreness in his left ankle. Another hurdle was placed in his path this week when he tested positive for COVID-19. The Giants remain hopeful that Barkley merely had a false positive, as he'll be retested Thursday and Friday to attempt to appease league protocols to return to the active roster, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. But as Judge intimated, missing back-to-back practices could be the biggest reason Barkley remains sidelined for a fourth straight game this weekend. Assuming Barkley is inactive or still on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Giants again will turn to Devontae Booker and Elijhaa Penny on Sunday.

May have false positive
Barkley's (ankle) placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday may have been the result of a false positive test for the virus, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Impact
In addition to Barkley, safety Xavier McKinney was placed on the list Wednesday as the result of a positive test, while left guard Matt Skura tested positive but wasn't placed on the list. The Giants apparently have some hope that all three players' results were false positives, and Barkley is scheduled to get retested Thursday and Friday as the team looks to gain further clarity on the matter, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic. Even if Barkley exits the COVID-19 protocol ahead of the team's final practice of the week Friday, he looks destined to miss his fourth straight game Sunday against the Raiders while he continues to contend with swelling and soreness in his sprained left ankle. Expect Devontae Booker to once again serve as New York's lead back this weekend.

On COVID-19 list
The Giants placed Barkley on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday after he tested positive for the virus, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
Impact
Due to an outbreak among 13 Giants players and staffers, retesting was done to see if there were any false positives. With Barkley's placement on the list, he thus is subject to league protocols before he can return to team facilities, let alone the practice field. He was listed as a non-participant anyway Wednesday due to his left ankle sprain, which he told Lisa Salters oF ESPN still was too swollen and sore to allow him to play in Monday's loss to Kansas City. Barkley may be in store for a fourth consecutive absence this weekend against the Raiders, only this time for a different reason.

No practice Wednesday
Barkley (ankle/COVID-19 protocol) didn't practice Wednesday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Impact
Barkley was among 13 Giants players or staffers that tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, but upon retesting, only running backs coach Burton Burns has a confirmed positive result. Because Barkley is vaccinated, he'll be able to rejoin his teammates if he tests negative again Thursday. Whether he gets back on the practice field is another story as he continues his recovery from a left ankle sprain suffered Week 5, which has resulted in three consecutive missed games. During that time, Devontae Booker and fullback Elijhaa Penny have earned most of the reps out of the Giants backfield.

Waiting to clear COVID-19 protocols
Barkley (ankle) is among the members of the Giants organization that tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, but the result has yet to be confirmed, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network re...
Impact
Per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, 13 players or staff members tested positive, but only running backs coach Burton Burns is confirmed to have submitted a second positive result on a retest. Since Rapoport notes that Barkley is vaccinated, the running back would be eligible to rejoin the Giants if he tests negative again 24 hours after the first negative result. Barkley doesn't look like he'll be able to practice Wednesday as a result, but he could be back on the field in some capacity Thursday if he clears all health and safety protocols. Barkley has missed the Giants' last three games with a left ankle sprain, so he'll need to demonstrate enough progress in practice by the end of the week to have a shot to play Sunday against the Raiders.
