GAME LOG

INJURIES

Quiet night against Carolina Stevenson carried the ball twice for four yards and failed to catch his only target in Friday's preseason game against the Panthers.
Impact Damien Harris, Ty Montgomery and Stevenson rotated through the offense during the first half, but the latter's performance lagged behind the other two as Harris averaged 6.0 yards a carry on his limited touches, while Montgomery found his way into the end zone. Stevenson is coming off an impressive rookie season and has been touted as a breakout candidate with the potential to encroach on Harris' early-down role while also seeing snaps on passing downs, but as in years past the Patriots' backfield could be a true committee in 2022, which would make it difficult to trust any of the three main backs on a weekly basis. Per Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, coach Bill Belichick indicated after the game all his healthy starters would be available for New England's preseason finale next week against the Raiders, so there will be one more chance for the coaching staff to provide some clarity on how Stevenson and the rest of the RB crew will be deployed in the regular season.

Gets work in two-minute drill Stevenson took snaps in the two-minute drill at Monday's practice, handling work that went to recently retired James White the past few years, Chris Mason of MassLive reports.
Impact White's hip injury and subsequent retirement have left the Pats without an obvious passing-down back, though converted wide receiver Ty Montgomery would have some appeal in the role. Stevenson, however, would offer more of a rushing threat, and his large frame might also make him a superior blocker once he's more comfortable with pass protections. Coach Bill Belichick has praised Stevenson's improvement in that regard, so while Montgomery might be more natural catching passes out of the backfield, Stevenson is also a candidate for third-down work. Stevenson, Montgomery and Damien Harris all were held out of the preseason opener, and there's also been discussion of Stevenson poaching more of Harris' workload on the ground.

Seeing some third-down reps Early on in training camp, Stevenson has been seeing added third-down reps, Henry McKenna of USA Today reports.
Impact It's clear that Stevenson will be part of the Patriots' early-down mix this season along with Damien Harris, but for now the 2021 fourth-rounder is logging added third-down reps, with veteran change-of-pace back James White (hip) on the active/PUP list and rookie Pierre Strong dealing with an undisclosed injury. For his part, Stevenson notes that he feels "a lot more comfortable running routes and catching the football," adding that he "did a lot of that (during the offseason): running routes, getting better with my hands, pass protection." Meanwhile, the 24-year-old, who the Patriots officially list at 6-foot, 230 pounds, says he's at about 225 pounds these days, and if that helps his quickness at all, it's plausible that the Oklahoma product -- who saw just 18 targets in 12 games last season -- could see some added opportunities in the passing game in 2022, even when his banged-up teammates return to the mix.

In line for key role in Year 2 Stevenson is poised to maintain a key role in the Patriots backfield, Paul Perillo of the team's official site reports.
Impact Also in the mix for early-down carries is Damien Harris, who is in the last year of his rookie deal, while the team hopes that veteran James White can move past a significant hip injury and reclaim his previous passing-down role. Additionally, third-year player J.J. Taylor and the versatile Ty Montgomery are in line to compete with rookie draftees Pierre Strong (fourth round) and Kevin Harris (sixth round) for complementary backfield work. As long as the incumbent Harris remains in the mix and is able to avoid injury, Stevenson's weekly volume figures to fluctuate in his second NFL season, but the 2021 fourth-rounder is a player who could have some strong fantasy efforts whenever the game plan works in his favor. As a rookie, the 6-foot, 230-pounder logged 133 carries for 606 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 14 catches (on 18 targets) for 123 yards in 12 games.

Complements Harris in Year 1 Stevenson finished the 2021 regular season with 133 carries for 606 yards and five touchdowns to go along with 14 catches (on 18 targets) for 123 yards in 12 games.
Impact He added eight carries for 27 yards and four receptions for 33 yards in last weekend's blowout loss to the Bills in the wild-card round. Per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Stevenson, who wasn't much of a factor in the Patriots offense until Week 5, finished the regular season with an overall 24.7-percent snap share. He emerged as an early-down factor alongside No. 1 back Damien Harris, who handled a 36.2-percent share over the course of the season. As the 2022 campaign approaches, the two will continue to form a solid 1-2 backfield punch, while the team's change-of-pace options have yet to be cemented, given that both James White (hip) and Brandon Bolden are eligible to become free agents this offseason. Though Harris continues to profile as New England's top back, there should be enough touches available for Stevenson in 2022 to have a degree of weekly fantasy utility, even when both backs are available. If and when Harris is out or limited for any reason, however, Stevenson would be in line for an uptick in his workload and fantasy production.

Totals 60 yards in postseason loss Stevenson rushed the ball eight times for 27 yards in Saturday's 47-17 wild-card round loss to Buffalo. He added four receptions for 33 yards.
Impact Stevenson was one of the few bright spots for New England, as he saw a substantial role as a pass catcher due to game script. The majority of his production did come with the game out of reach, though he still managed long receptions of 15 and 10 yards while matching his career high with four receptions. Stevenson progressively saw his workload increase throughout his rookie campaign, and he could be the primary backup to Damien Harris in 2022 should James White (hip) sign elsewhere as a free agent during the offseason.

Not on injury report Stevenson (head) doesn't appear on the Patriots' injury report ahead of Saturday's wild-card game against the Bills.
Impact Per Mike Reiss of ESPN.com, Stevenson was limited to just nine snaps in the Patriots' Week 18 loss to the Dolphins on account of the head injury. Fortunately, Stevenson was able to check back into the contest, which suggested he passed all concussion tests. With no limitations Wednesday in the Patriots' first practice of the week, Stevenson is poised to continue to share early-down work this weekend with Damien Harris.
JANUARY 12, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Five touches in Sunday's loss Stevenson carried the ball four times for 34 yards and caught one of two targets for two yards in Sunday's 33-24 loss to the Dolphins.
Impact He wound up finishing third in the Patriots' backfield in touches behind Damien Harris (15) and Brandon Bolden (nine) after missing a large part of the middle of the game with a head injury, but Stevenson was still very productive on the ground with the workload he did get. Assuming the injury isn't serious, he should be more involved in the offense Saturday in the wild-card round against the Bills, a defense he ran for 78 yards against on 24 carries in their first meeting this season.

Back in Sunday's game Stevenson (head) returned to Sunday's game at Miami, Michael Giardi of NFL Network reports.

Exits Sunday's game Stevenson was forced out of Sunday's game against the Dolphins with a head injury.
Impact Prior to his exit from the contest, Stevenson caught one pass for two yards. In his absence, Damien Harris and Brandon Bolden will handle the Patriots' Week 18 backfield work.
