Impact While his ability to stay healthy remains a concern, the Eagles' new running back seems to be doing well at the moment and profiles as the new lead runner for a high-powered offense that just lost Miles Sanders to the Panthers. The Eagles also have Kenneth Gainwell and re-signed Boston Scott, both of whom are solid options on passing downs but neither of whom is in Penny's league as a pure runner. The team could still add more backfield talent via the draft or free agency, but it probably won't be a pricey signing or early pick, leaving Penny as a strong favorite for the Week 1 start and lead role. The 27-year-old has a career mark of 5.7 yards per carry and should get better blocking in Philadelphia than he ever did in Seattle, running behind an O-line with four standouts in LT Jordan Mailata, LG Landon Dickerson, C Jason Kelce and RT Lane Johnson.

Moving on to Philly The Eagles and Penny (lower leg) agreed to terms on a contract Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Impact Since the Seahawks made Penny a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, he's been beset by injuries, seeing action in just 42 of 82 possible games across five seasons. What he's been able to do when available is significant, as he's averaged 5.7 YPC and reeled off 24 runs of 20-plus yards among his 337 career rushes. With Miles Sanders and Boston Scott currently unrestricted free agents, Philadelphia appears poised to roll with the backfield combo of Penny and Kenneth Gainwell in the upcoming campaign, setting Penny up for success behind one of the NFL's top offensive lines. First though, he will need to complete his recovery from the broken left fibula and high-ankle sprain that ended his 2022 season after only five contests.

Impact Penny suffered the injuries back in Week 5 and underwent surgery to repair the fracture on Oct. 12, getting a four-month recovery timetable at the time. That may have inched up, if only for a day, after he told Ian Furness of 93.3 KJR Seattle on Sunday that he may be able to suit up in the playoffs if the Seahawks play beyond Week 18. The comment comes in the wake of Travis Homer sitting out Week 13 with an illness and Kenneth Walker (ankle) and DeeJay Dallas (ankle) picking up health concerns in Sunday's 27-23 win at the Rams. With such a banged-up backfield, the situation could be such in mid-January that Penny has a chance to return, even it's premature.

Could return for playoffs Penny (ankle/fibula) said Sunday that there's a "decent chance" he could return if the Seahawks make the playoffs, Curtis Crabtree of Fox 13 Seattle reports.

Impact Penny underwent surgery to repair his left ankle and fractured fibula in October and has been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season, but he's apparently made good progress in his recovery and is in the mix for a return during the playoffs. Kenneth Walker sustained an ankle injury during Sunday's win over the Rams, and the severity of the issue isn't yet known. Regardless of Walker's status down the stretch, Penny's potential availability for the playoffs would provide Seattle's backfield with a fresh set of legs during the postseason. The 26-year-old logged 57 carries for 346 yards and two touchdowns while securing four of five targets for 16 yards over five appearances prior to sustaining his injury.
