INJURIES

Not suiting up Week 2 Penny (calf) is listed as inactive Sunday versus the Titans.
Impact After injuring his calf Week 1 in Indianapolis, Penny is missing the first game of what's expected to be a multi-week absence. In Penny's stead, the Seahawks will trust in Alex Collins, DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer to handle reserve RB reps behind starter Chris Carson.

Unlikely to play Sunday Penny (calf) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Titans, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Impact Since Penny hurt his calf Week 1 at Indianapolis, the injury has transformed from minor to one that's expected to sideline him for a few weeks. With a doubtful designation for Sunday, he's almost certainly going to be listed among the Seattle's inactives, which would give Alex Collins, DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer a chance to make an impact in the ground game behind starter Chris Carson.

Remains out at practice Penny (calf) was a non-participant at Thursday's practice, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Impact Since injuring his left calf in the season opener, Penny has been described as first dealing with a minor issue, then a player expected to miss multiple weeks. Coach Pete Carroll clarified the situation somewhat Monday, telling Dugar that Penny was unlikely to play Week 2 against the Titans. With back-to-back absences in practice so far this week, Penny seems to be trending that way, but the Seahawks may not provide clarity until the release of Friday's injury report.

Seahawks' defensive line depth shines in opener

There might not be any big names on the defensive front for the Seattle Seahawks

Not practicing, as expected Penny (calf) won't practice Wednesday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Impact The lack of activity comes as no surprise, with Penny already considered unlikely to play Week 2 against Tennessee. He aggravated a left calf injury in Sunday's win over the Colts, leaving DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer as the backup running backs, though Alex Collins could also be active this week.

Passing grade: Seahawks new offense looks great in opener

Of all the uncertainty that followed the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, the biggest unknown was left unanswered until Week 1
SEPTEMBER 13, 2021 • Associated Press
Unlikely to play Week 2 Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny (calf) is trending toward being absent for Sunday's game against the Titans, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Impact Ultimately, the severity of Penny's strained calf will determine when he's next able to suit up, but the Seahawks could allow him to take his time and place him on injured reserve to free up a roster spot. If Penny is sidelined Week 2, the trio of Alex Collins, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas will be the backups to starting running back Chris Carson.

Multi-week absence upcoming Penny (calf) is expected to miss multiple weeks, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact So much for the injury being minor. The oft-injured Penny once again will be sidelined, and a stint on short-term IR hasn't been ruled out. Seattle has no shortage of options vying for playing time behind Chris Carson in Penny's absence, with Alex Collins, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas all on hand in the backfield.

Injury considered minor Penny's calf injury is believed to be minor, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Penny aggravated a calf injury during Sunday's season opener against the Colts, but the issue isn't believed to be a significant concern. The 25-year-old recorded two carries for eight yards prior to his departure Sunday. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available for Sunday's Week 2 matchup against Tennessee.

Hurts calf Sunday Penny injured his left calf during Sunday's game at Indianapolis.
Impact Penny tended to a calf injury during Week 1 prep, logging limited showings Wednesday and Thursday before capping it with a full practice. But the injury resurfaced Sunday, which has been the story of his three-plus years in the league. Behind clear top back Chris Carson, the Seahawks have Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas at the ready for backfield reps.

Cleared to face Colts Penny (calf) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game at Indianapolis, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Impact The Seahawks enter Sunday with five healthy running backs, though at least one presumably will be placed on the inactive list. Chris Carson figures to get the start and most of the carries, but Penny could be the second man up, at least for early downs. The other options are Alex Collins, Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas.

Wentz ready to make new start as Colts host Seahawks

Carson Wentz spent most of training camp in meetings, studying playbooks and learning the offense through others
SEPTEMBER 9, 2021 • Associated Press
Limited by calf injury Penny (calf) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, John Boyle of the Seahawks' official site reports.
Impact Penny tended to a thigh issue in training camp, only to make two appearances during the preseason slate, combining for 12 carries for 32 yards and two receptions (on three targets) for 11 yards. The production wasn't anything to write home about, and he now is dealing with another soft-tissue injury. With Chris Carson at the head of Seattle's backfield, Penny would vie with Alex Collins and perhaps Travis Homer for touches Week 1 at Indianapolis, assuming he's able to suit up.
SEPTEMBER 8, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Hangs onto roster spot Penny was one of five running backs to make the Seahawks' 53-man roster released Tuesday, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic reports.
Impact Penny struggled during the preseason, but the exhibition snaps were more about him getting back into the swing of things after having logged just 11 carries since tearing his ACL in 2019. However, Penny's underwhelming performance allowed Alex Collins to sneak into the No. 2 running back conversation. For fantasy managers, Penny isn't a surefire insurance policy to Chris Carson, though he may have the most upside.
SEPTEMBER 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Records 29 total yards in win Penny rushed seven times for 24 yards and brought in one of two targets for five yards in the Seahawks' 27-0 preseason win over the Chargers on Saturday night.
Impact Penny was able to get on the field for the final two preseason games and was more productive on the ground than during his five-carry, eight-yard performance last Saturday against the Broncos. The 2018 first-round pick did see backfield mate Alex Collins turn in an impressive performance in which he led the Seahawks in rushing yards (37), receptions (seven) and receiving yards (37) while also contributing a rushing score, however, so it remains to be seen if that will shake up the depth chart behind No. 1 back Chris Carson and knock Penny down a notch in the process.

AUGUST 23, 2021 • SEAHAWKS.COM
Struggles in preseason debut Penny (thigh) carried five times for eight yards and caught his lone target for six yards in Saturday's 30-3 preseason loss to the Broncos.
Impact After tearing his ACL in Week 14 of the 2019 season, Penny came back last year and logged just 11 carries for 34 yards over three games. The Seahawks didn't pick up his fifth-year option, so he's battling for placement on the depth chart. This was a tough start to Penny's comeback, though we shouldn't read into this exhibition performance too much. The Broncos' starting defensive line was on the field against the Seahawks' backup offensive line. Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic believes Penny will be the No. 2 back to start the year, but Chris Carson should handle a majority of the reps as long as he's healthy.

Seahawks injury updates: Dee Eskridge, Geno Smith, Rashaad Penny Seahawks coach Pete Carroll gave a few injury updates in his press conference following today’s practice.
AUGUST 18, 2021 • USATODAY.COM
May play Saturday Coach Pete Carroll is hopeful Penny (thigh) suits up and plays during Saturday's preseason game against the Broncos, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact Due to draft pedigree alone, Penny, a 2018 first-round pick, would be the leader in the clubhouse to back up starter Chris Carson under normal circumstances. But Penny has appeared in just three games since tearing his ACL in December 2019 (all at the end of last season) before sitting out the Seahawks' wild-card loss to the Rams due to a knee issue. He subsequently underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee in the offseason and has missed more than a week of practice recently with a thigh concern. Penny will need to get on the field soon to play Saturday, but even if he doesn't he'll have one more exhibition Saturday, Aug. 28 versus the Chargers to prove he should be the No. 2 RB in Seattle. Travis Homer (calf), probably Penny's primary competitor, is on the PUP list, leaving DeeJay Dallas, Alex Collins and Josh Johnson to vie for slotting in this positional group.

Could practice next week Coach Pete Carroll said Penny (thigh) may return to practice next week, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports. "Next week should be a really big week for him," Carroll noted. "He's r...
Impact Penny has missed practice since suffering what Carroll considered a "minor" thigh injury Sunday. Thus, Penny will sit out Saturday's preseason game in Las Vegas, with an aim to get back on the field shortly thereafter. Behind Chris Carson, Penny's pedigree as a 2018 first-rounder likely gives him the best shot for touches in the Seahawks backfield when healthy. But health has been the key issue for Penny in his career, as he's made just three appearances since tearing his ACL in December 2019.
