INJURIES

Competing with Taylor, Mack Hines may face tougher competition for snaps this season, but he'll still have plays specifically designed to get him the ball, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reports.
Impact Marlon Mack's Achilles tear in Week 1 last year left the Colts with Hines, Jonathan Taylor and Jordan Wilkins in the backfield. Each of the four is still with the team, and Taylor is locked in for a sizable workload after exploding for 723 total yards and eight touchdowns over the final five weeks of his rookie season. If Taylor stays healthy, it'll be tough for Hines to match his career-best 2020 campaign, though he should still earn most of the backfield snaps in clear passing situations. He's entering the final year of his rookie contract, and his impressive work on punt returns (14.9-yard average, two touchdowns on 39 career attempts) will give his agent some extra ammo in negotiations for an extension. Colts owner Jim Irsay said linebacker Darius Leonard and offensive tackle Braden Smith will be the priorities for extensions this offseason, but Irsay at least mentioned Hines as a third candidate for a new deal among the team's 2018 draft class, according to Jim Ayello of The Indianapolis Star.

Seven touches in playoff loss Hines rushed six times for 75 yards and caught one of three targets for eight yards in Saturday's 27-24 wild-card round loss to the Bills.
Impact He took a back seat to Jonathan Taylor (23 touches) but made the most of his limited touches, finishing with 83 scrimmage yards to Taylor's 84. Hines was tackled on the one-yard line twice, and while Taylor promptly powered in a touchdown on the next play after the first one, Hines' inability to get in proved costly the second time, as the Colts went backward from there and ultimately turned it over on downs. The versatile running back should maintain his prominent change-of-pace role in the final year of his rookie contract next season.

Collects 67 total yards in win Hines rushed twice for 17 yards and secured six of seven targets for 50 yards in the Colts' 28-14 win over the Jaguars on Sunday. He also returned four punts for 40 yards.
Impact Hines was a complete afterthought in the ground game with Jonathan Taylor exploding for a career-high 253 yards and two touchdowns, but he paced the Colts in receptions and receiving yards in a game during which Indianapolis stuck to a conservative passing attack. Hines' carry total was his lowest since Week 9, but his reception total qualified as his second highest of the season. Given Taylor's late-season surge, Hines projects to primarily fill the pass-catching role he carries out so effectively in next weekend's wild-card matchup against the Bills.

Totals 64 scrimmage yards Hines carried eight times for 44 yards and caught all five of his targets for 20 additional yards during Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Steelers.
Impact Hines averaged a healthy 5.5 yards per carry and snared every pass sent his way, but his inability to break off big plays limited his overall output. Although his 145 rushing yards over the last three games is by far his best stretch of the season, he's averaging just 16 receiving yards per game during the same timeframe. Hines could have plenty of chances to add to his numbers in next Sunday's regular-season finale against the hapless Jaguars.
DECEMBER 27, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Limited to seven touches Hines rushed the ball five times for 43 yards in Week 15 against the Texans. He added two receptions for 11 yards.
Impact Hines played a complementary role to Jonathan Taylor, with much of his production coming on the team's first drive on a 23-yard run. He chipped in from there for the remainder of the game, including additional rushes of 11 and nine yards as well as a nine-yard reception. Hines will likely be in line for a complementary role once again in a Week 16 matchup against the Steelers.
