Not expected to play Sunday Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Fitzpatrick (illness) isn't expected to play in Sunday's contest against the Chargers, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Fitzpatrick was placed on the COVID-19 list Monday after Kimberley A. Martin of ESPN reported the 24-year-old tested positive for the virus. According to Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com, Fitzpatrick is vaccinated, so he would be eligible to play Sunday against the Chargers as long as he's no longer experiencing symptoms and provides two negative tests at least 24 hours apart. However, Tomlin's comments suggest the Steelers are planning to be without the star safety, which would likely force Tre Norwood into a spot start.

Impact Fitzpatrick's move off the 53-man roster was fully expected after Kimberley A. Martin of ESPN reported earlier Monday that the star safety tested positive for the virus. According to Dale Lolley of DKPittsburghSports.com, Fitzpatrick is vaccinated, so he'll be eligible to play in the Steelers' next game Sunday against the Chargers so long as he's no longer experiencing symptoms of the virus and tests negative on two occasions at least 24 hours apart. Through Pittsburgh's first nine games, Fitzpatrick has recorded 64 tackles, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

Impact Fitzpatrick is a cornerstone of the Steelers' defense and missing him for any time would be a big blow to the secondary. It is possible he could still return in time for Week 11, but that depends on his vaccination status and ability to produce multiple negative test results. If Fitzpatrick were to miss Sunday, it will likely lead to a bigger workload for Tre Norwood or Miles Killebrew.
