Moves up depth chart
With Javonte Williams having suffered a season-ending knee injury, Boone could see added opportunities along with Melvin Gordon in the weeks ahead, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News repo...
Impact
Given Gordon's experience as a lead back, the Broncos figure to lean more heavily on him in Williams' looming absence, but the 29-year-old has fumbled four times (in as many games) this season and he'll need to take better care of the ball in order to maintain steady volume going forward. For his part, Boone has carried just three times for 20 yards to date, but unlike Gordon, he's likely to still be available in most league's free agent pools, making him a decent speculative add while seeing how Denver's backfield situation unfolds, beginning Thursday against the Colts.

Four touches Sunday
Boone carried the ball three times for 20 yards and caught one of three targets for nine yards in Sunday's 32-23 loss to the Raiders.
Impact
The running back came into the game with only one touch through three weeks, but Boone saw extra work late in the game after Javonte Williams left with a knee injury. Boone was also the target of a fourth-down pass from Russell Wilson on the Broncos' final series as the team attempted to mount a desperate comeback, but the ball clanked off his hands. Williams' injury is feared to be serious, so Boone could see a consistent role behind or alongside Melvin Gordon in Week 5 against the Colts.

Catches one pass in loss
Boone caught his only target for two yards in Monday's 17-16 loss to the Seahawks.
Impact
Boone failed to record a single rush in the contest operating as Denver's third-string running back. As expected, the 27-year-old took a backseat to both Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon as a rusher, and both backs saw more work in the passing game. Williams led the Broncos' in targets with 12, and Gordon was targeted twice. Boone's limited usage on offense is likely to continue as long as both Williams and Gordon remain healthy. Nonetheless, the veteran will look to build upon his performance when the Broncos host the Texans in Week 2.

Finishes season with six touches
Boone appeared in eight games in 2021 and rushed four times for 35 yards while catching his only two targets for 22 yards.
Impact
Boone missed the first five games of the 2021 campaign with a quadriceps injury he suffered before the season in training camp. When the veteran running back made his return to the field, his involvement was minimal as a result of the near-even backfield split between Melvin Gordon and rookie Javonte Williams. Both backs had a strong year, so Boone played a depth role for the games in which he was active while also contributing on special teams. Boone is entering the second year of his two-year contract he signed in March of 2021, so he will likely be a member of the Broncos next season. Gordon, however, is set to become a free agent this offseason. It's possible that Boone could become Denver's de facto No. 2 running back behind Williams if Gordon signs with another team. In that scenario, Boone would hold some value in 2022 as a change-of-pace back for a team that runs the ball effectively.

Returns from COVID-19 list
Denver reinstated Boone (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.
Impact
Denver received a roster exemption for Boone, so he could be eased back into the fold with lighter workloads in practice to begin the week after he spent 10 days on the reserve/COVID-19 list following his positive test of the virus. Through five appearances with Denver this season, Boone has garnered only seven touches (five carries, two receptions), but he's produced 47 yards from scrimmage. Even so, Boone isn't likely to see much of an uptick in opportunity over Denver's final three games while both Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams are healthy.

Tests positive for COVID-19
The Broncos placed Boone on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday due to a positive test for the virus, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.
Impact
As a result, Boone won't be available Sunday against the Lions. The Broncos list Melvin Gordon (hip/shoulder) as questionable for Week 14, so if he ends up sitting a second game in a row, Damarea Crockett would be the only other running back on the active roster behind rookie second-rounder Javonte Williams.

Placed in COVID protocol
Boone was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Ryan O'Halloran of The Denver Post reports.
Impact
Boone was pulled from Friday's practice after reporting that he wasn't feeling well. While he hasn't been officially ruled out for Sunday's game against Detroit, it's highly unlikely that Boone will clear the COVID-19 protocol in time to suit up. The Broncos are optimistic that Melvin Gordon (hip/shoulder) will be able to play, but if Gordon and Boone both end up sitting, Damarea Crockett would be left as the lone backup to Javonte Williams.

Limited role in loss
Boone rushed four times for 35 yards and caught his only target for 19 yards in Sunday's 22-9 loss to the Chiefs.
Impact
Boone operated as the Broncos' No. 2 running back in the contest with Melvin Gordon (hip/shoulder) sidelined, though it was rookie Javonte Williams who received the bulk of the carries and targets out of the backfield. Boone showed the burst that he's known for, but Williams stole the show in his first action as a true feature back. With Gordon likely practicing ahead of Week 14 matchup with the Lions, Boone should return to his usual depth role as the third man up on the depth chart.

Impact
Gordon wasn't able to practice in any capacity this week, making it likely that he'll be inactive for the first time all season. Through their first 11 games, the Broncos have deployed a near-even backfield timeshare of Gordon and Williams, with both receiving similar snap and touch counts in nearly every game. That has left scant work for Boone since coming off injured reserve Week 6, though he showed the ability to produce on the occasions he saw carries for the Vikings the past three seasons. Even so, rather than simply plugging Boone in for Gordon as part of a timeshare, the Broncos are more likely to prepare the Williams for his first look in a three-down bellcow role, with Boone likely mixing in when the rookie requires a breather.
