Cut loose by Jags The Jaguars waived Fournette on Monday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Impact The team tried to trade Fournette during the offseason but wasn't able to work anything out. With the Jaguars rebuilding and the 2017 first-round pick a questionable scheme fit under offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, it shouldn't be too much of a shock to see Fournette headed elsewhere, though it's perhaps surprising the team wasn't able to trade him for at least a late-round pick. The Jags are left with Ryquell Armstead, Chris Thompson, Devine Ozigbo, James Robinson and Nathan Cottrell in the backfield, with Armstead seemingly the favorite to lead the team in carries Week 1 against Indianapolis. There will be a lot of attention focused on the Jacksonville backfield over the next few weeks, as Thompson, Ozigbo and Robinson could also be in the mix for touches. Garafolo expects the team to open the season using a backfield committee.

Looks sharp at camp Fournette has looked good in practice, according to John Oehser of Jaguars.com.

Impact The caveat is that he hasn't done much contact work, which makes sense for someone who is locked in as a starter and is expected to handle a lot of carries this season. However, there were some less-than-promising signs coming out of Jacksonville this offseason, starting with April reports that the team tried to trade Fournette but wasn't able to. The Jags then declined the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, right around the same time they signed passing-down specialist Chris Thompson. While he still figures to take plenty of carries, Fournette isn't likely to approach last year's 76 receptions, now working under OC Jay Gruden rather than John DeFillipo. The extent of Fournette's workload may involve some guesswork ahead of a Week 1 matchup with the Colts.

Impact Armstead fared modestly as a rookie in 2019, turning 49 touches into 252 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Notably, he went for 15-85-1, respectively, in a spot start for Leonard Fournette in Week 17. After an offseason in which veteran pass-catching back Chris Thompson joined the Jags, Armstead's outlook wasn't looking bright, at least for this season.
