OCTOBER 7, 2020 • CLEVELAND.COM
Receiving Week 5 start Washington will name Allen its new starting quarterback ahead of Sunday's game against the Rams, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact The Football Team's No. 2 quarterback for the first quarter of the season, Allen will ascend to the top spot on the depth chart after Dwayne Haskins (61.0 percent completion rate, 6.4 yards per attempt, 4:3 TD:INT) was benched after generally struggling to move the offense through Washington's first four games. Allen's existing familiarity with first-year head coach Ron Rivera from their time together in Carolina the past two seasons may have accelerated the change at quarterback, but expectations for the 24-year-old should be tempered as he steps in as Washington's new signal-caller. Allen was unable to keep turnovers in check while seeing extended action for the Panthers in 2019, throwing 16 interceptions and fumbling 13 times (losing seven) in 13 games. Allen will need to clean up the mistakes with Washington if he hopes to maintain his starting role throughout the season and hold off veteran Alex Smith, who will elevate to the backup role Week 5 while Haskins falls to third on the depth chart, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Washington's Haskins shows signs of growth as a leader

Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins wanted to be voted a team captain in his second NFL season
SEPTEMBER 18, 2020 • Associated Press
Begins year as No. 2 QB Washington lists Allen as its No. 2 quarterback heading into Sunday's season opener against the Eagles, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Impact Though Alex Smith will be included on the 53-man roster, head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged the veteran signal-caller still needs some time to shake off the rust while he returns from the career-threatening leg injury he suffered in November 2018. As a result, Allen will begin his first campaign in Washington as the top backup to Dwayne Haskins, who emerged as the team's starting quarterback coming out of training camp.

QB Alex Smith activated by Washington, cleared for practice

Quarterback Alex Smith has been activated off the physically unable to perform list by Washington’s NFL team
AUGUST 16, 2020 • Associated Press
Looks good during workouts Smith (leg) recently impressed during four straight days of on-field workouts with Washington's training staff, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Impact Smith was medically cleared by Washington's surgical staff early last week, but his subsequent placement on the PUP list meant he can't practice. No matter, he clearly has been able to get in some on-field work as he continues his recovery from a gruesome leg injury and ensuing bouts with infection. There's no telling when (or if) Smith will make it all the way back, but he seems to be putting himself in a position to return to the regular-season roster. In the meantime, quarterback will be manned by some combination of 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen in the nation's capital.

Gets PUP designation Smith (leg) was placed on the PUP list Monday morning, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Players on the PUP list aren't eligible to practice but can be removed from the list at any time before the start of the regular season. Any player who remains on the list for Week 1 will be automatically held out for the first six weeks, a fate that wouldn't come as any surprise for Smith as he continues to work his way back from the gruesome leg injury he suffered in November 2018. While the 36-year-old still seems to be targeting a return to football, the discussion surrounding Washington's QB room for 2020 has focused on Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen.

Benefiting from odd schedule? A limited offseason program combined with the cancellation of the preseason could work in Allen's favor if the Washington quarterback job is truly up for grabs, JP Finlay of NBC Sp...
Impact New coach Ron Rivera has hinted at Haskins being the starter but hasn't outright committed to it. Allen and offensive coordinator Scott Turner worked together in Carolina last season, while Haskins is in the difficult position of learning a new offense on a shortened schedule. The 2019 first-round pick should still be viewed as the favorite to start Week 1, but the possibility of Allen making it a camp battle can't be ruled out. Haskins and Allen were arguably the two worst starting QBs in the NFL last year, though Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky gave them a run for their money.

Washington's Smith must pass physical before being cleared

Quarterback Alex Smith needs to pass his physical with Washington doctors before being cleared for football activities
JULY 25, 2020 • Associated Press
Physical set for Monday Smith (leg) is scheduled to have his physical with Washington's team doctors Monday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic reports.
Impact According to Stephania Bell of ESPN, Smith has already been cleared by his surgical team for full football activity, so it looks like he will be ready to move ahead in that process if he passes his physical. The news is pretty remarkable considering how serious of an injury he sustained back in Week 11 of 2018. He suffered a compound fracture of his right tibia and a fractured right fibula, which resulted in him at one point deliberating whether or not to have his leg amputated due to the severity of an ensuing infection. The veteran signal-caller has remained intent on playing again, but at 36 years old and coming off such a serious injury, it remains unclear if that will be a possibility. Second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins is the presumed starter going into the season at this point, while Kyle Allen and Steven Montez are both on the depth chart as well.
