With his friend's health on his mind, Joshua Palmer aiming for bigger Chargers role Can Joshua Palmer be third top wide receiver the Chargers desire? After a 33-catch rookie season, the team hopes he can fill an important ro...

Works with first-string offense Palmer worked with the first-team offense during the Chargers' OTAs, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact It's far too early in the offseason to make a definitive claim about Guyton's role heading into the 2022 campaign, but the third-round pick may be the early frontrunner for the No. 3 gig ahead of Jalen Guyton. Palmer quietly came into his own toward the end of his rookie season, compiling 18 receptions, 185 yards and three touchdowns over the final five games. While the Los Angeles offense would be noticeably devoid of speed if the Tennessee product was to earn the other starting wideout spot alongside Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, it would still put Palmer in decent position to post numbers in the Chargers' high-octane aerial attack.

Scores in season finale Palmer caught four of his nine targets for 45 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 35-32 overtime loss to the Raiders. The rookie finished the 2021 season with 33 receptions for 353 y...
Impact It took COVID-19 absences from both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams to force the issue, but Palmer quietly seemed to earn confidence from quarterback Justin Herbert toward the latter half of the season, accumulating 18 receptions, 185 yards and three touchdowns in his last five games. Both Williams and nominal No. 3 starter Jalen Guyton are technically free agents entering this offseason, but given that the Chargers boast the sixth-highest cap space among NFL teams, the team could certainly choose to bring back both players. The rookie's lack of breakaway speed seemingly doesn't make him an ideal candidate to play outside where the aforementioned duo operate, which also throws a wrench in 2022 projections, but it's at least encouraging to have seen Palmer develop some chemistry with Herbert, Los Angeles' ascending franchise signal-caller.
JANUARY 13, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Catches three passes in win Palmer secured three of five targets for 16 yards in Sunday's 34-13 win over the Broncos.
Impact Palmer split the Chargers' No. 3 receiver role with Jalen Guyton, as Mike Williams was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of the contest. Palmer played on 31 of the team's 67 offensive snaps, one fewer than Guyton. The rookie wideout's five targets were the second-most of any Chargers pass catcher. With Keenan Allen and Mike Williams both appearing healthy for a Week 18 matchup with the Raiders, Palmer is difficult to trust for fantasy purposes.
JANUARY 5, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Likely headed for smaller role Palmer is expected to share the Chargers' No. 3 receiver role with Jalen Guyton in Sunday's game against the Broncos after both Guyton and Mike Williams were activated from the res...
Impact While both Williams and Guyton were on the list last week, Palmer stepped in as the No. 2 wideout behind Keenan Allen and played a whopping 98 percent of the Chargers' offensive snaps and finished with a 5-43-1 receiving line on six targets in a 41-29 loss to the Texans. After Guyton was activated from the list Wednesday, both he and Palmer still looked on track to have regular spots in three-receiver sets this weekend, but Williams' reinstatement Thursday closed the door on that possibility. When Allen, Williams and Guyton were all last available in the same game Week 15 against the Chiefs, Palmer's snap share dropped to 41 percent, with the rookie securing his lone target for a 15-yard gain in that contest.
DECEMBER 31, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Finds end zone in expanded role Palmer recorded five receptions on six targets for 43 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 41-29 loss to the Texans.
Impact Palmer ascended into the second wide-receiver role in the absence of Mike Williams (undisclosed) and Jalen Guyton (illness), and he was surpassed by only Justin Jackson in receiving production. He was involved early, picking up three receptions for 34 yards by the end of two quarters. However, Palmer's most useful fantasy production came in garbage time on a three-yard touchdown catch with 34 seconds remaining in the contest. Palmer should retain a substantial role in Week 17 against the Broncos should the Chargers' receiving corps remain depleted.

Set for No. 2 role Palmer is expected to be the No. 2 wide receiver for the Chargers entering Sunday's contest with both Mike Williams and Jalen Guyton on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Daniel Popper of...
Impact It'll be interesting to see how the Chargers offense operates with both Keenan Allen and Palmer as the primary options on the field given the two generally tend to run the same routes, but given the lack of available weapons overall Sunday it might simply be a matter of talent overcoming scheme deficiencies. Jason Moore, the third-year practice squad receiver with just two catches over the course of his career, will operate as the team's No. 3 wide receiver with Williams, Guyton and Andre Roberts (illness) all sidelined.
DECEMBER 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
One catch Thursday Palmer caught his lone target for 15 yards in Thursday's 34-28 loss to the Chiefs.
Impact The return of Keenan Allen from COVID-19 protocols predictably moved Palmer back to an afterthought as the rookie wideout saw just 41 percent of Thursday's offensive snaps. The 22-year-old has at least seen his offensive role grow throughout the season, playing at least 20 offensive snaps for the fifth consecutive game after going over that threshold just once through Week 10, but the incremental rise in playing time hasn't done much for his fantasy value. Don't expect things to change much in Week 16 even against the Texans.
DECEMBER 17, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Breakout game Palmer caught five passes for 66 yards and one touchdown on seven targets against the Giants on Sunday.
Impact Palmer led the Chargers with seven targets against the Giants, stepping up in place of usual lead target Keenan Allen, who was out due to COVID protocols. Palmer appeared to be Allen's main backup throughout the year, and this game both confirms that status and Palmer's readiness to step up in instances during which Allen is out. Palmer will likely revert to the WR4 role once Allen returns to the field, and Allen is expected to play against the Chiefs in Week 15.
DECEMBER 13, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Missed only target Palmer missed his only target in Sunday's 41-22 win over the Bengals.
Impact Palmer saw a slip in snap time as Mike Williams and Jalen Guyton took charge. The rookie's lone target was simply a dropped deep pass which slipped off his hands and somehow landed in the cornerback's arm for Justin Herbert's lone interception. In the previous five games, the fourth-string wide receiver had at least one catch with 17-plus yards, but with a significant lead for most of the afternoon Palmer wasn't needed. Facing the Giants in the upcoming week, the rookie might have an impact on the field with Keenan Allen placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday.
DECEMBER 7, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Snares two catches Palmer caught both of his targets for 25 yards in Sunday's 28-13 loss to the Broncos.
Impact The rookie saw his second-most snaps this season, but the extra workload once again didn't translate to much. Favorable passing game scripts could force Palmer onto the field more as the season progresses, but he's far behind the totem pole with a number of more efficient targets heavily utilized by the Chargers.
NOVEMBER 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Only one catch Palmer caught his only target for 17 yards in the 41-37 win over the Steelers on Sunday.
Impact After going two straight games with at least two catches, Palmer was limited to only one reception Sunday night. The 22-year-old's snap share was down from last week as he was only on the field for 30 percent of snaps, a bit less than Jalen Guyton. With the high volume of passes that go to Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, Palmer's fantasy value is significantly minimized.

Season high in receptions Palmer caught three of four targets for 22 yards during Sunday's 27-20 loss against the Vikings.
Impact Palmer caught a season-high three passes against the Vikings on Sunday. All three of Palmer's catches came on the Chargers' last possession of the game and set up a 24-yard Dustin Hopkins field goal. Palmer has only seen 17 targets on the year, but this game marks an uptick in usage for the 2021 third-round pick. Moving forward, Palmer should continue to function as Justin Herbert's fifth or sixth option in the passing game, and his upside is capped by the talent ahead of him in the receiving core.
NOVEMBER 16, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Two catches in road win Palmer caught both of his targets for 22 yards in Sunday's 27-24 win over the Eagles.
Impact Palmer continues to have a small role in the Chargers' explosive offense, extending his streak of at least one catch to four games. The rookie wideout saw an uptick in playing time as he was on the field for 30 percent of the offensive snaps, a major increase from Week 8 where he was only on the field for 13 percent. Going forward, look for the 22-year-old to split the No. 3 wide receiver role with Jalen Guyton.
NOVEMBER 9, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
First career touchdown Palmer caught his lone target for 24 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Patriots.
Impact Palmer's score game on a junk-time drive, but it was an impressive catch nevertheless as the 2021 third-round pick plucked the ball away from two defenders on an underthrown pass. The rookie has rarely been used this season, ceding the majority of the playing time to Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Jalen Guyton.
NOVEMBER 1, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Hardly relevant in win Palmer caught two of his three targets for 12 yards in Sunday's 47-42 win over the Browns.
Impact Palmer played 16 offensive snaps, but was once again relegated to an after thought. After seemingly emerging from training camp as the No. 3 pass catcher, Palmer has more or less been a depth piece behind Jalen Guyton, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams and likely won't rise above that spot unless injuries occur.
OCTOBER 12, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Mundane figures again Palmer caught two targets for 21 yards in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Cowboys.
Impact Palmer at least saw his opportunities line up with No. 3 wideout Jalen Guyton (two catches, 13 yards), but it's fair to say the third-round rookie hasn't wowed over the first two weeks. Don't anticipate a change in his fantasy value unless an injury shakes up the top of the depth chart.

SEPTEMBER 18, 2021 • TORONTOSUN.COM
Not No. 3 wideout just yet Palmer caught his lone target for 17 yards in Sunday's 20-16 win over Washington.
Impact Two weeks after reportedly beating out Tyron Johnson for the Chargers' No. 3 wideout role, Palmer saw just 14 offensive snaps compared to Jaylen Guyton's 53. The team could have simply been easing the rookie into his first professional game, but the difference in snaps is jarring given how strong the 2021 third-rounder's training camp supposedly was. Palmer's playing time likely will increase as the season progresses, but for the moment he's safely off the radar, even in deeper fantasy formats.

SEPTEMBER 5, 2021 • THEATHLETIC.COM
Locked in No. 3 role Palmer secured the Chargers' No. 3 receiver role after the team waived Tyron Johnson on Tuesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact Given the big-play ability Johnson's displayed last season, the Chargers' decision to cut him is somewhat surprising. Jalen Guyton (leg) is still around as a downfield option -- a useful asset to have considering the team's top two wideouts, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, are far from burners -- but it's clear the Chargers likes Palmer as an intermediate threat. The rookie's role in what should be an explosive offense will be something to monitor in the team's opener Sept. 12 against Washington.
