INJURIES
Exits Sunday's game
Reed was forced out of Sunday's game against the Giants with an ankle injury, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
Impact
Yet another injury for the 49ers, who are already without star tight end George Kittle (knee) this week. Next up for the team's looks at the position are Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner.

Set for major role again
Reed will have another opportunity to fill in for George Kittle (knee), who has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Reed played only 46 percent of offensive snaps in last week's 31-13 win over the Jets, but he ran a route on 63 percent of the QB dropbacks and finished with a 7-50-2 receiving line on a team-high eight targets. He should be a big part of the passing game again, though it'll be Nick Mullens starting at quarterback this week, rather than Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle).

Fills Kittle's shoes admirably
Reed caught seven of eight targets for 50 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 31-13 win over the Jets.
Impact
Reed put on his best George Kittle (knee) impression, leading the team in targets and catches as the starting tight end with Kittle inactive. He did well to toe the sideline and dive for the pylon for an 18-yard touchdown in the second quarter, then added a four-yard score just before halftime. Kittle's expected to return in Week 3 and push Reed back into a lesser role, but this performance shows that Reed's capable of stepping up should Kittle need to miss any additional time. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo exited at halftime with an ankle injury, and the entire 49ers' passing game will be tough to trust despite a favorable matchup against the Giants next week if Garoppolo can't go.

Increased role on tap Sunday
Reed is in line for an elevated workload after George Kittle (knee) was ruled out for Sunday's road game against the Jets, Keiana Martin of the 49ers' official site reports.
Impact
In the midst of playing 61 of 62 snaps on offense in the 49ers' season-opening loss to the Cardinals, Kittle suffered a sprained left knee. Meanwhile, Reed logged 10 such snaps, Ross Dwelley got seven, and Charlie Woerner was on the field for one. Due to Reed's known history of concussions, he's somewhat of a risky play, but he did gather in both of his targets for 12 yards in his first game with San Francisco.

Two catches in loss
Reed caught both of his targets for 12 yards in Sunday's 24-20 loss to Arizona.
Impact
Reed had a pedestrian debut with his new club, but none of San Francisco's receivers ended up with more than four catches. The 30-year-old is no longer an every-down starter due to his injury history and the presence of star tight end George Kittle. The latter actually suffered a leg injury in this one, so Reed could find himself in a favorable fantasy situation against the Jets next week if his teammate is unable to heal up by Sunday.

One of four tight ends on roster
Reed survived the 49ers' final roster cutdown and will be one of four tight ends on San Francisco's 53-man unit heading into Sunday's season opener versus the Cardinals.
Impact
Reed's football career was in question after he suffered his seventh documented concussion last season, but a healthy training camp in San Francisco has the tight end ready to resume playing. The 30-year-old will be a backup for the first time since his rookie season, but the reduced role could help keep the veteran away from the medical tent. George Kittle is the clear top dog among the four tight ends on the roster, but head coach Kyle Shanahan has shown a proclivity for two tight-end sets in the past. Reed's elite route running and hands -- along with his mediocre blocking -- could also result in the him lining up in slot or out wide more often, especially with the 49ers' receiver corps looking questionable heading into Week 1. Reed could join the likes of Dallas Goedert and O.J. Howard as backup tight ends with some fantasy upside this season.

Strong training camp debut
Reed took part in his first padded practice with the 49ers on Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
Reed got off to a strong start with his new club, looking sharp while running routes and making a couple of tough catches in practice. The 30-year-old sustained the seventh documented concussion of his career last season and has dealt with myriad other injuries during his time in the NFL, but he looked healthy enough for Maiocco to add him back onto his 53-man roster projection. Reed won't be in line for a starting role at tight end for the first time since his rookie year in 2013, but a small role behind standout George Kittle could help Reed's durability, even if it limits his fantasy appeal.
