Ending NFL career Reed is retiring from football, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact The 2013 third-round pick played six seasons for Washington and one for San Francisco, peaking in 2015 with an 87/952/11 receiving line in 14 games. Reed missed multiple games every year, including an entire season in 2019. He might've been a regular Pro Bowler with better injury luck, as he averaged 5.4 catches for 56.5 yards per game over his first four NFL seasons, hauling in 75.8 percent of his targets in the process.

Solid bounce-back campaign Reed finished the 2020 season with 26 receptions (on 46 targets) for 231 yards and four touchdowns across 10 games with the 49ers.
Impact Reed's career appeared to be in jeopardy after he missed the entire 2019 season while recovering from a concussion, the latest of several head injuries the tight end accumulated since entering the NFL in 2013. He received clearance to resume his career in 2020, and after linking up with the 49ers, he was fortunately able to stay relatively healthy for the most part, with the six games he missed being the result of a left knee sprain rather than a concussion. Even in a part-time role, the 29-year-old proved to be a capable receiving threat, especially in the red zone. He'll be an unrestricted free agent heading into the 2021 season, and the 49ers could have interest in retaining Reed to provide a high-quality pass-catching option on the depth chart behind star tight end George Kittle.

Finds end zone vs. Cowboys Reed caught two of five targets for 18 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 41-33 loss to the Cowboys.
Impact Reed got off to a promising start as he got his team on the board with a five-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. He later added a 13-yard reception but was unable to haul in any more passes and finished with another modest yardage total. Meanwhile, George Kittle (foot) is pushing to return for the final two games of the season, but it remains to be seen if he's activated, given the 49ers' 5-9 record. If not, Reed would once again serve as the top tight end next Saturday against the Cardinals.

Five targets in losing effort Reed had two receptions (five targets) for 12 yards in Sunday's 23-15 loss to the Washington Football Team.
Impact Reed (33 snaps) continues to split playing time with starter Ross Dwelley (36 snaps), with the latter being used more as a blocker and the former as a receiving threat. This was the first week that Dwelley (two receptions for 20 yards) outproduced the veteran tight end statistically, but Reed still garnered more targets with five to the starter's two. The 30-year-old still can post usable fantasy numbers in his current role, but the inconsistent play of backup quarterback Nick Mullens has kept Reed from becoming a fixture in standard leagues. George Kittle (foot) is unlikely to return for Sunday's matchup with the Cowboys, so Reed will continue to serve as the 49ers' primary receiving tight end for another week.

Alex Smith faces old 49ers team with no familiar faces

When Alex Smith steps on the field to take on the San Francisco 49ers for just the second time since being traded away more than seven years ago little will look familiar
DECEMBER 10, 2020 • Associated Press
Finds end zone late in loss Reed brought in three of four targets for 32 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' 34-24 loss to the Bills on Monday night.
Impact The veteran tight end was on his way to a decidedly unremarkable performance until corralling a five-yard touchdown pass from Nick Mullens in the right corner of the end zone with 54 seconds remaining. The touchdown grab was Reed's third of the season but first since Week 2 against the Jets, the contest in which he notched his other two scoring catches. He has put together a combined 10-112-1 line over the last three games while continuing to help fill in for George Kittle (IR-foot), and he'll look to carry over Monday's late-game spark into a Week 14 battle against his former Washington club.

Not in sync with QB Reed caught just two of six targets for 18 yards in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Rams.
Impact Reed continued to share the starting workload with Ross Dwelley in George Kittle's (foot) extended absence. The former logged 44 percent of the offensive snaps while the latter saw 61 percent, but it was Reed who commanded most of the attention in the passing game (six targets to Dwelley's two). However, quarterback Nick Mullens did not have his finest game despite getting the victory, failing to connect with his veteran tight end on multiple occasions. Reed remains the preferred option in San Francisco for fantasy purposes, but inconsistent quarterback play could result in rough outings like Sunday's.

Playing Sunday Reed (illness) is active for Sunday's game versus the Rams.
Impact Reed was held out Thursday and Friday due to an illness, but it won't impact his ability to suit up Week 12. In two contests with George Kittle (foot) on injured reserve, Reed has totaled six catches (on eight targets) for 65 yards.

49ers getting Samuel, possibly other key players back

The San Francisco 49ers could be getting a handful key players back from injuries this week but may have to wait longer for six players on the COVID-19 list to return
NOVEMBER 27, 2020 • Associated Press
Uncertain to face Rams? Reed (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Rams.
Impact Reed was held out of practice Thursday and Friday while recovering from an illness that reportedly isn't related to COVID-19. An absence Sunday could free up more pass-catching work for fellow tight end Ross Dwelley, who saw two targets to Reed's six in the final game before a Week 11 bye. George Kittle (foot) remains on injured reserve, with no assurance of making another game appearance this season.
NOVEMBER 27, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sits out practice Thursday Reed (illness) didn't practice Thursday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Impact The same applies to teammates Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair, but Lombardi notes that the trio's absence Thursday was non-Covid-19 related. We'll circle back on Reed's status Friday to see if he approaches Sunday's game against the Rams fully cleared to play or heads into the weekend with an injury/illness designation.
NOVEMBER 26, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Sets season high in yardage Reed caught five of six targets for 62 yards during Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Saints.
Impact Reed finished second on the team in targets, catches and receiving yards as he delivered his best output of the season in the latter category. He made an excellent one-handed catch on a low throw and demonstrated his still-considerable ability on another couple of grabs. Reed should have plenty of chances to contribute as long as George Kittle (foot) is sidelined, which could be until late in the season. Reed will rest up over the upcoming bye before presumably serving as the team's top tight end in Week 12 against the Rams.

Can't-Miss Play: Jordan Reed makes IMPOSSIBLE catch centimeters above ground San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens throws an 8-yard pass to tight end Jordan Reed.
NOVEMBER 15, 2020 • NFL.COM
Limited usage in return Reed (knee) was activated from injured reserve Thursday but was limited to just one reception (two targets) for three yards in a 34-17 loss to Green Bay.
Impact The 49ers were starving for any receiving help they could get their hands on, but the coaching staff opted to play it safe with the oft-injured tight end (just 13 offensive snaps). Reed could see his production ramp up exponentially following the news that George Kittle (ankle) will miss an extended period of time. Ross Dwelley is still considered the starting tight end in Kittle's absence, but Reed is the superior receiver and could end up putting up better fantasy numbers even if he has to share snaps. Consider the 30-year-old a speculative add heading into a Week 10 matchup against the Saints.
