Recovery ahead of schedule Metchie (knee) has beat the normal timetables for a player recovering from a torn ligament, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact Metchie remains on the sidelines while his teammates participate in OTAs, but the doctor who performed the knee surgery is confident the wide receiver will be ready this summer. "I think he's able to hit all the milestones that the medical staff in Houston wants him to meet in terms of being ready to do things for the team this summer," Dr. Lyle Cain said. The Texans aren't pushing Metchie, who remains confident he'll be ready to play by training camp.

Impact While general manager Nick Caserio underscored the team wouldn't rush along Metchie's progress, the timeline seems to fit a comment made last month by the Alabama product suggesting he'd receive medical clearance by June. It's likely the 2022 second-round pick slowly assimilates into the offense with the goal of eventually joining the starting lineup toward the middle portions of the regular season, but getting practice reps all throughout the preseason could be a critical part of Metchie's development ahead of his rookie campaign.

Heading to Lone Star State The Texans selected Metchie (knee) in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 44th overall.

Impact Metchie suffered a torn ACL on Dec. 4, so his status will be worth monitoring when training camp approaches. The former Alabama star previously expressed hope he might receive clearance to return to the field in June, and if that comes to pass, then he should be on track to push for a significant role, even as a rookie. The Texans have Brandin Cooks at the top of the depth chart and Nico Collins might be their main boundary receiver, but Metchie could pick up most of the WR3 reps on a Texans team that figures to play plenty of catch-up. He produced 151 receptions for 2,058 yards and 14 touchdowns on 212 targets over the last two years (71.2 percent catch rate, 9.7 yards per target).
