Could Steelers Target 2022 Day 2 Receiver? If the Pittsburgh Steelers are still searching for receiver help, John Metchie III makes a good amount of sense.
JUNE 17 • THENEWSTRIBUNE.COM
The Surprise NFC Team that Could Target Houston Texans' John Metchie III The Houston Texans have been urged to trade wide receiver John Metchie III after selecting two Iowa State receivers in the second and third...

Plays minor role on offense Metchie secured 24 of 37 targets for 254 yards and one touchdown across 13 regular-season games with the Texans in 2024. He also suited up for both of Houston's playoff games, secu...
Impact Metchie, a 2022 second-round pick, missed his entire rookie campaign due to illness, and has since carved out a rotational role on on offense with the Texans. There was opportunity for Metchie to earn more significant opportunities on offense in 2024, with both Stefon Diggs (knee) and Tank Dell (knee) sidelined down the stretch, but even with expanded target volume the former Alabama standout struggled to to efficiently produce. He's now heading into the final year of his rookie deal with Houston.
FEBRUARY 17 • ROTOWIRE
Limited production on eight targets Metchie recorded four receptions on eight targets for 28 yards in Saturday's 32-12 win over the Chargers. He also lost a fumble.
Impact Metchie's day got off to a rough start, as he fumbled after a seven-yard reception on Houston's first offensive play of the game. He recovered to tie for the team lead with eight targets, though he was inefficient with his opportunity and also tallied a long catch of only 10 yards. He should maintain a key role throughout Houston's postseason run with both Stefon Diggs (knee) and Tank Dell (knee) sidelined for the long term.
JANUARY 12 • ROTOWIRE
Active Saturday Metchie (shoulder) is listed as active for Saturday's wild-card game against the Chargers.
Impact Metchie got a concussion check last Sunday at Tennessee, but a shoulder injury ultimately didn't allow him to practice Tuesday before progressing to limited Wednesday and a full session Thursday. Despite receiving a questionable tag for the Texans' playoff opener, he'll be available to the Texans offense Saturday. Since fellow WR Tank Dell (torn ACL) joined Stefon Diggs (torn ACL) as out for the season Week 16, Metchie produced a 7-72-0 line on 12 targets over the final two games of the regular season.
JANUARY 11 • ROTOWIRE
Full practice, but questionable Metchie (shoulder) is listed as questionable for Saturday's wild-card round game against the Chargers after practicing fully Thursday.
Impact Metchie, who was listed as a non-participant Tuesday, was limited Wednesday and closed out the Texans' practice week with a full session Thursday, which bodes well for his chances of being available for Saturday's 4:30 ET kickoff. If, however, Metchie ends up limited or out versus Los Angeles, added snaps behind top wideout Nico Collins would be available for some combination of Robert Woods, Diontae Johnson and Xavier Hutchinson.
JANUARY 9 • ROTOWIRE
Limited in return to practice Metchie (shoulder) returned to a limited practice Wednesday.
Impact After missing Tuesday's practice, Metchie's return a day later, albeit in a limited capacity, bodes well for his availability for Saturday's playoff opener against the Chargers. With that in mind, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston previously noted that the wideout is expected to play this weekend, though Metchie may need to practice fully Thursday in order to avoid an injury designation.
JANUARY 8 • ROTOWIRE
Misses practice with shoulder issue Metchie didn't practice Tuesday due to a shoulder injury.
Impact Metchie was forced out late in the third quarter of this past Sunday's 23-14 win over the Titans after taking a hit to the upper-body area from Titans defensive back Daryl Worley and was sent in for a concussion check. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Metchie passed all concussion testing, but he apparently injured his shoulder on the hit. He'll have two more opportunities to potentially get in some on-field work before the Texans decide whether he takes a designation into Saturday's wild-card game versus the Chargers. Metchie finished the regular season with 24 catches for 254 yards and one touchdown on 37 targets over 13 games.
JANUARY 7 • ROTOWIRE
Getting concussion check Metchie is under evaluation for a head injury during Sunday's game at Tennessee.
Impact Metchie was on the receiving end of a big hit from Titans safety Daryl Worley late in the third quarter that drew a flag for unnecessary roughness. The wide receiver was able to walk to the sideline of his own volition but went straight to the sideline tent. If Metchie is diagnosed with a concussion, he'll end Week 18 with two catches (on three targets) for 24 yards.
JANUARY 5 • ROTOWIRE
Returns with elevated role Metchie (shoulder) had five receptions on eight targets for 48 yards in Wednesday's 31-2 loss to Baltimore.
Impact Metchie returned from a one-game layoff to find himself in an elevated role in the passing game sans starter Tank Dell (knee). The 24-year-old Metchie led the Texans in targets Wednesday while setting a new personal high through 12 active games this season. Metchie's increased usage should put him on the map in deeper formats in Houston's regular-season finale against the Titans next Sunday.
DECEMBER 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Listed as full Monday Metchie (shoulder) was listed as a full participant on Monday's injury report.
Impact Metchie didn't practice last week before being ruled out ahead of this past Saturday's game at Kansas City. Since then, he followed Sunday's limited listing with an upgrade to all activity one day later, indicating he's past the shoulder injury that sidelined him Week 16. Prior to the recent absence, Metchie had recorded at least one catch in five consecutive contests en route to a 13-146-1 line on 18 targets during that stretch.
DECEMBER 23, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Estimated as limited Sunday Metchie (shoulder) was listed as limited on Sunday's practice estimate, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact The Texans played the Chiefs on Saturday, so the team didn't actually hold a practice a day later. In any case, the status of Metchie -- who was inactive against Kansas City -- gains added import ahead of Wednesday's game against the Ravens, given that fellow wideout Tank Dell is in line to miss time with a knee injury.
DECEMBER 22, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Won't play Saturday vs. Kansas City Metchie (shoulder) did not practice Thursday and has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Chiefs.
Impact Metchie was unable to practice all week due to a shoulder injury he suffered against the Dolphins this past Sunday. With Metchie ruled out for Saturday's game, his next opportunity to play will be Christmas Day against the Ravens. Robert Woods and Xavier Hutchinson are the top candidates to serve as the Texans' No. 3 wide receiver behind Nico Collins and Tank Dell on Saturday due to Metchie's injury.
DECEMBER 19, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Not practicing Wednesday Metchie (shoulder) remained sidelined at practice Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Impact Metchie remains a non-participant after being held out of Tuesday's walk-through practice. He'll have one more opportunity to practice prior to the release of game designations Thursday for Saturday's matinee against the Chiefs. Robert Woods would be the top candidate to step into three-receiver sets alongside Nico Collins and Tank Dell if Metchie's unavailable.

DECEMBER 18, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Managing shoulder injury Metchie was listed as a non-participant for Tuesday's walk-through practice due to a shoulder injury.
Impact During this past Sunday's 20-12 win over the Dolphins, Metchie finished fourth in snaps (21) among Texans receivers, finishing the day with two catches for 17 yards on four targets. Metchie's 42 percent snap share was his lowest since Week 8, and the shoulder injury may in part explain why he saw a smaller role than usual. He'll now have two more opportunities to potentially log some practice activity before the Texans decide whether he'll carry a designation into Saturday's game in Kansas City.

DECEMBER 17, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Four targets in win Metchie caught two of four targets for 17 yards in Sunday's 20-12 win over the Dolphins in Week 15.
Impact One of Metchie's four targets was an incompletion in the red zone. He's been the most productive of the bunch behind Nico Collins and Tank Dell, but the overall passing game in 2024 is not what it was in quarterback C.J. Stroud's rookie 2023 season. Metchie has 17 receptions (25 targets) for 182 yards over 11 games played.
DECEMBER 16, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Two grabs in win Metchie caught both of his targets for 16 yards in Sunday's 23-20 win over Jacksonville in Week 13.
Impact Metchie operated as the third wideout but had little impact. Xavier Hutchinson (shoulder) was inactive, and his potential snaps were distributed among Metchie (31), Robert Woods (21) and Jared Wayne (16). The passing game played out as it has the last few weeks, with Nico Collins (11 targets), Dalton Schultz (seven) and Tank Dell (four) being the main components. Metchie had a recent bump in activity, but that appears to have dimmed since Collins returned from a stint on the IR due to a hamstring injury.
DECEMBER 2, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Likely third wideout Week 13 Metchie is expected to be the third wideout Sunday against the Jaguars, as Xavier Hutchinson (shoulder) is questionable for Week 13.
Impact Metchie and Hutchinson each experienced upticks in playing time when injuries hit the wideout room. Since Nico Collins returned two weeks ago, Metchie has more targets (six) and been on the field more (79 snaps) than Hutchinson (one target, 36 snaps). Metchie averaged a 57-percent share of the offensive snaps with 12 receptions (18 targets) for 142 yards and a touchdown over the last five weeks. Collins and Tank Dell are expected to gobble up most of the targets on Thanksgiving weekend, while Metchie gets the leftovers.
NOVEMBER 30, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
One touch in loss Metchie caught one of three targets for six yards in Sunday's 32-27 loss to Tennessee in Week 12.
Impact Metchie's activity picked up dramatically since injuries hit the wide receiver room, garnering 18 targets over the last five weeks. He's had varying degrees of success, but now that Nico Collins is back, he's looking for whatever scraps aren't allotted to Collins, Tank Dell and, to a degree, the tight ends.
NOVEMBER 25, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Three targets in win Metchie caught all three targets for 33 yards in Monday's 34-10 win over Dallas in Week 11.
Impact Nico Collins finally returned from a hamstring injury, giving quarterback C.J. Stroud another target option. The QB's attention to Metchie took a hit, but the receiver appears to have emerged as the third wide receiver behind Collins and Tank Dell. Metchie (39 snaps) was on the field more than Xavier Hutchinson (28) or Robert Woods (20) and has 11 receptions on 15 targets for 136 yards and one touchdown the last four weeks. The playing time could take a hit in the coming weeks as the Texans feel more comfortable about giving Collins more than the 30 snaps he had Monday.
NOVEMBER 19, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Breaks out against Lions Metchie recorded five receptions on six targets for 74 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 26-23 loss to the Lions.
Impact Metchie enjoyed the most productive game of his career and paced the Texans with 74 yards. He was particularly impressive on a possession just before halftime, initially hauling in a deep 25-yard pass before capping the drive with a 15-yard touchdown reception -- the first of his career. While Nico Collins (hamstring) is likely to be back in Week 11 against the Cowboys, Metchie could have the chance to earn a larger role across the second half of the season due to the underwhelming showings from Tank Dell.
NOVEMBER 11, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Two targets in loss Metchie failed to catch either of his two targets in Thursday's 21-13 loss to the Jets in Week 9.
Impact With the team's top wideouts sidelined, Metchie was in line to take on a greater role, but it didn't work out that way. Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud spent much of the night running away from or getting hit by Jets defenders, which made a mess of the passing attack. Metchie, who played a season-high 50 snaps, and fellow wideout Xavier Hutchinson (59 snaps, three targets, no catches) were non-factors in the loss.
NOVEMBER 1, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Could see increased workload Metchie is one of four healthy wide receivers entering Thursday's game against the Jets, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Impact The Texans received the expected bad news Tuesday that Stefon Diggs suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. That, coupled with Nico Collins (hamstring) on injured reserve for at least one more week, opens the door to Metchie, who had received a boost in his workload the last three weeks when it was only Collins sidelined. Metchie had a season-high four targets last Sunday when Diggs sustained his injury. In fact, it was Metchie that replaced Diggs and caught two passes on the same drive that resulted in a Houston score that made it a two-score game in the fourth quarter. He'll likely serve as the fourth wideout after Tank Dell, Robert Woods and Xavier Hutchinson in Week 9.
