Why Jalen Guyton is the offensive X-factor for the LA Chargers
This past week, the LA Chargers selected wide receiver Josh Palmer, from the University of Tennessee with the 77th overall pick in the 2021...

Massive snap count yields little
Guyton (hamstring) finished the 2020 season with 28 receptions for 511 yards and three touchdowns across 16 games.
Impact
The second-year player provides an example that high snap counts don't necessarily translate into fantasy success. Despite playing the 12th-most snaps of any wide receiver in 2020 and posting the third-highest average depth of target among wideouts with at least 40-plus targets (16.0), Guyton was hardly a factor in his first season as a starter. Content to use the 23-year-old as blazing speed decoy and not much more, Guyton caught three or more passes just three times all season, with two of those efforts coming in down the stretch with Keenan Allen (hamstring/COVID-19) and Mike Williams (back) both sidelined. There's a distinct possibility Guyton could be even less of a focal point depending on how the Chargers change their offense in 2021. With Anthony Lynn now gone, a system that relied heavily on a speed threat to open up the field for numerous crossing routes could fall to the wayside, leaving Guyton possibly on the outside looking in when it comes to the team's No. 3 wide receiver role.

Turns in full practice
Guyton (hamstring) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Guyton's ability to take every rep Thursday clears the way for him to fill a starting role out wide for the Chargers in Sunday's game versus the Chiefs. Though Guyton has typically served as a secondary target for quarterback Justin Herbert this season, the receiver could be in store for a heightened role in the passing attack Week 17. No. 1 receiver Keenan Allen (hamstring) has already been ruled out for the contest after landing on the reserve/COVID-19 list, while top tight end Hunter Henry remains on the same list as of Thursday and is uncertain to gain clearance for the season finale.

Limited session Wednesday
Guyton (hamstring) was limited at practice Wednesday.
Impact
With Keenan Allen (hamstring) seemingly trending toward another absence Sunday against the Chiefs, Guyton's Week 17 status gains import. If Allen ends up out and Guyton is cleared to play this weekend, he'd be taking aim at a Kansas City squad that's likely to be sitting or limiting some of its key players, given that the team has clinched the AFC's No. 1 playoff seed.

Posts 43 yards in win
Guyton caught three of his five targets for 43 yards in the 19-16 win Sunday over the Broncos.
Impact
For a fourth consecutive week, Guyton saw the most offensive snaps of any wide receiver, but the speedy wideout was once again used as a decoy despite Keenan Allen (hamstring) and Hunter Henry (reserve/COVID-19 list) ruled out ahead of the contest. The 23-year-old Guyton has risen from relative obscurity to tally at least 30 receiving yards in four of the last five games, but he is simply a cursory cast member when considering the rest of the Chargers' dangerous receiving ensemble.

Makes key grab in OT
Guyton brought in four of six targets for 91 yards in the Chargers' 30-27 overtime win over the Raiders on Thursday night. He also rushed once for four yards.
Impact
On a night when both Keenan Allen (hamstring) and Mike Williams (back) were at least partly hobbled, Guyton took advantage of extra opportunity to post a career- and team-high yardage figure. The catch that propelled him to those accomplishments was the most critical of the game for Los Angeles, as it came in the form of a 53-yard grab on a post pattern with just 3:05 remaining in overtime and the Raiders holding a 27-24 lead. The play, which nearly resulted in a touchdown, ultimately set up a Justin Herbert one-yard game-winning scoring push into the end zone. Guyton had previously flashed this season with 72- and 84-yard showings in Weeks 4 and 7, respectively, and he'll look to continue a strong finish to the campaign in a Week 16 matchup against the Broncos on Sunday, Dec. 27.

Almost invisible in win
Guyton caught just one of his three targets for eight yards in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Falcons.
Impact
Despite Mike Williams leaving Sunday's game early with a back injury, Guyton was a complete afterthought throughout the contest. Instead, second-year pro Tyron Johnson immediately filled the void to the tune of six receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown and he came up with the critical catch in the waning seconds to set up a game-winning 43-yard field goal. Both Williams and Keenan Allen (hamstring) were estimated as DNP's for Monday's practice although it remains to be seen if either injury is serious enough to keep them off the field Thursday against the Raiders. It's hard to envision the speedy wide receiver will really be used prominently in the offense unless both of the aforementioned star wideouts are unable to play.

Season high in targets
Guyton caught two of his seven targets for 38 yards in Sunday's 45-0 loss to the Patriots.
Impact
Quarterback Justin Herbert was pressured tremendously throughout this game which is likely why he looked to Guyton more times than ever before (seven targets). This matchup also marked Guyton's second time playing the most amount of offensive snaps (64), which was even more than Keenan Allen (62 snaps) and Mike Williams (59). The Chargers were unfortunately stumped in this blowout loss, but hopefully Guyton and the company can turn it around for next Sunday against the Falcons.

Catches three passes
Guyton caught three of his four targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 27-17 loss to Buffalo.
Impact
It was unclear how Guyton would perform in this less-than-ideal matchup against the Bills, but surprisingly he played just as well as Mike Williams, both catching three receptions. The receiver also played in a similar number of offensive snaps (63) compared to Williams (67). Guyton successfully caught a 46-yard pass from Justin Herbert at the very end of the game, but a bogus offensive pass interference did not allow it to count. The speedy wideout has registered multiple receptions in just four games this season.

Records one reception
Guyton caught his lone target for four yards in Sunday's 34-28 win against the Jets.
Impact
Coming off last week's season high in receptions, Guyton did not receive the same amount of opportunities in this matchup against the Jets. His limited opportunities were due to Keenan Allen's incredible performance, as Allen tied the franchise record for most receptions in a single game. Sunday's matchup against the Bills might make it difficult to give the 23-year-old Guyton more chances to be involved.

Season high in receptions
Guyton caught four of his six targets for 24 yards in Sunday's 29-21 loss to Miami.
Impact
Sunday's matchup was a season high in targets and receptions for Guyton. The receiver saw fewer snaps (44) than Mike Williams (48) but still managed to double his number of receptions. Credit the extra emphasis on Guyton to the Dolphins' dynamic cornerback duo, as both Byron Jones and Xavien Howard made things difficult for Williams and Keenan Allen. While this was an unusually successful game for Guyton, the Chargers take on the Jets next week, which might allow for another opportunity to thrive.

Solo reception in loss
Guyton caught one of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 31-26 loss to the Raiders.
Impact
Guyton continues to be low on the pecking order with Mike Williams, Hunter Henry and Keenan Allen once again seeing many more targets. It's a bit surprising the 23-year-old hasn't found more targets considering he continues to see plenty of playing time (69 snaps Sunday, second behind Keenan Allen's 78), but so long as Guyton maintains his exclusive deep threat role, it'll be hard to roster him in fantasy leagues.

Catches lone target
Guyton caught one of four targets for three yards in Sunday's 31-30 loss against the Broncos.
Impact
Guyton finally saw more than three targets in a game, but unfortunately only registered one catch in the third quarter for a mere three yards. He now has nine receptions for 261 yards, while the Chargers' top two receivers, Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, have both seen more than double the yards and receptions. The 23-year-old Guyton has continued to maintain a role as a deep threat and that most likely won't change next week against Las Vegas.

Hauls in long TD in win
Guyton caught two of three targets for 84 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 39-29 win over the Jaguars.
Impact
The second-year receiver has yet to see more than three targets in any game this season, but Guyton made his low volume count Sunday as he hauled in a pass down the sideline from Justin Herbert and turned it into a 70-yard score late in the third quarter, marking his third TD of the year. Guyton's role isn't likely to change any time soon, but he'll remain a deep threat and a DFS dart throw for Week 8's road game against the Broncos.

Catches one pass
Guyton caught one of his three targets for 49 yards in Monday's 30-27 overtime loss to the Saints.
Impact
Mike Williams (hamstring) returned from his one-week absence and had an excellent performance, scoring two touchdowns and catching five of his eight targets in comparison to Guyton's single catch. Guyton had the opportunity to shine after Keenan Allen (back) left the game in the first quarter due to a back injury, but the receiver had one stellar catch and that was about it. It's unclear what Allen's status will be moving forward, but he'll have time to heal over the Week 6 bye, likely leaving Guyton in the deep-threat decoy role he's held all season.
