Broncos rookie Bo Nix outperforms veteran QBs in preseason debut
Michael Pittman Jr. - One target in preseason opener Pittman didn't catch his only target in Sunday's 34-30 preseason loss to the Broncos.
Impact Pittman was the only wide receiver to earn a target from starting quarterback Anthony Richardson, as Richardson's other three passes during his two-drive stint in the game were all directed to tight ends. After racking up 296 catches for 3,159 yards and 14 touchdowns over the past three seasons, Pittman heads into 2024 as the clear No. 1 option in the Colts' passing game. He and the starters could see more action Saturday against the Cardinals in Indianapolis' next preseason game.

Adonai Mitchell - Catches pass from backup QB Mitchell caught one of two targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 34-30 preseason loss to the Broncos.
Impact Both of Mitchell's targets came from backup Joe Flacco on the third drive of the game, as the rookie wide receiver wasn't thrown to by Anthony Richardson on the first two possessions. Mitchell and Alec Pierce had been splitting first-team reps in training camp prior to Josh Downs' high-ankle sprain in practice Wednesday, which could open the door for both Mitchell and Pierce to play prominent roles early in the regular season alongside No. 1 receiver Michael Pittman. Mitchell will look to flash more of the skills that made him a second-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft when the Colts continue preseason play Saturday against the Cardinals.

Jonathan Taylor - Two carries in preseason cameo Taylor rushed twice for four yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 34-30 preseason loss to the Broncos.
Impact Taylor played the first two drives alongside starting quarterback Anthony Richardson, but the Colts understandably didn't give the workhorse running back many touches. While Taylor may continue to sprinkle in some carries throughout the preseason, including Saturday against the Cardinals, the Colts have little reason to put significant tread on his tires during the exhibition slate considering Taylor has handled 925 carries over the past four regular seasons and is in line for another high-volume campaign in 2024.

Anthony Richardson - Gets two drives in preseason opener Richardson completed two of four passes for 25 yards and rushed once for one yard in Sunday's 34-30 preseason loss to the Broncos.
Impact Richardson played the first two drives, which didn't result in any points for the Colts. While his performance in this preseason opener was nothing to write home about, it's nonetheless encouraging to see the 2023 fourth overall pick taking part in game action again after a shoulder injury ended his rookie season in Week 5. Richardson will look to shake off the rust in the Colts' next preseason game, Saturday against the Cardinals.

Trey Sermon - Exits preseason opener with injury Sermon won't return to Sunday's exhibition contest against Denver due to a hamstring injury, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact Sermon headed to the medical tent in the first quarter and has since been ruled out from returning. The severity of his hamstring injury isn't yet clear, but it could impact his availability for the remainder of the preseason slate and potentially prevent him from being ready for the start of the regular season as well. Sermon had been the leader for the No. 2 RB role behind Jonathan Taylor prior to the injury, with Tyler Goodson and Evan Hull lining up in the pecking order below him.

Jonathan Taylor - Playing in preseason opener Taylor is starting the Colts' first preseason game against Denver on Sunday, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.
Impact Taylor is likely to see the field for just a series or two, but it will give him an opportunity to play alongside Sunday's starting QB Anthony Richardson after the pair logged just two snaps together last year. It could be interesting to see how lining up next to Richardson affects Taylor's opportunities, particularly at the goal line, as Richardson is an explosive runner who logged a 38 percent goal-line carry rate last year before getting injured in Week 5. Taylor scored seven times on the ground and one time through the air over 10 regular-season contests in 2023.

JuJu Brents - Getting the day off Brents (shoulder) is getting a "rest day" from practice Sunday, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Impact Atkins further added that the shoulder issue is minor and that the team "doesn't want to risk anything." Brents had offseason ankle surgery but returned in time for training camp. The 2023 second-round pick started eight of the nine games he played in last year, recording 43 tackles, six passes defensed, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
