Matt Gay - Status in question for Sunday
Gay (hernia) is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Texans.
Impact
Gay has been in recovery mode since undergoing surgery on a sports hernia following Indianapolis' last preseason game Aug. 22. He didn't practice at all this week, but the team still is giving him a chance to serve as its placekicker Sunday. Coach Shane Steichen told JJ Stankewitz of the Colts' official site Friday that Spencer Shrader will handle kicking duties this weekend if Gay is deemed inactive about 90 minutes before a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.

Alec Pierce - Could take Downs' spot Week 1
Pierce is set to play an increased role Sunday against the Texans, as JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' official site reports that Josh Downs (ankle) has been ruled out.
Impact
Pierce is the top candidate to start on the outside across from Michael Pittman, as rookie second-round pick Adonai Mitchell is likely to play primarily in the slot. Pierce has seen plenty of playing time in his first two seasons but has often been used as a decoy to stretch the field without getting substantial target volume, as he finished short of 600 receiving yards and scored only two touchdowns in each campaign.

Adonai Mitchell - Poised for decent volume in debut
Mitchell could see additional targets Sunday against the Texans, as JJ Stankevitz of the Colts' official site reports that Josh Downs (ankle) has been ruled out.
Impact
Mitchell's likely to play primarily in the slot, but there will likely be more opportunities for both the rookie second-round draft pick and Alec Pierce alongside Michael Pittman in Downs' absence. Mitchell showed promising chemistry with quarterback Anthony Richardson as they connected for a touchdown in the preseason finale, and they will look to carry that success over into the regular season.

Josh Downs - Out for Sunday's game
Coach Shane Steichen said Friday that Downs (ankle) is out for Sunday's season opener against the Texans.
Impact
Downs was able to do some individual movement drills off to the side during Friday's practice, but he won't be ready for Week 1 action and will thus target a potential return Sept. 15 against the Packers. In his absence versus Houston, fellow WRs Adonai Mitchell and Alec Pierce should see added opportunities behind No. 1 receiver Michael Pittman.

Matt Gay - Looking unlikely for Sunday
Gay (sports hernia) is not participating in Friday's practice, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Gay hasn't practiced in any capacity this week while recovering from sports hernia surgery, making him look like a strong candidate to sit out Sunday's regular-season opener against the Texans. Friday's official practice report will reveal Gay's injury designation for Week 1. If Gay can't go, undrafted rookie Spencer Shrader will work as Indianapolis' starting kicker versus Houston.

Josh Downs - Working off to the side
Though Downs (ankle) wasn't participating in practice Friday, James Boyd of The Athletic notes that the wideout was doing individual movement drills off to the side.
Impact
If Downs officially goes down as a 'DNP' for the third straight practice, his chances of suiting up Sunday versus Houston wouldn't seem promising. Either way, added context with regard to his Week 1 status will arrive no later that the release on the Colts' final injury report of the week.

Matt Gay - Absent from field
Gay (sports hernia) is not practicing Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Gay's status for Week 1 against the Texans is firmly in question after he underwent a procedure to address a sports hernia following the team's final preseason game Aug. 22. The team still hasn't elevated Spencer Shrader from their practice squad, but if Gay is unable to suit up, he is the likeliest option to handle kicking duties for the Colts on Sunday.

Josh Downs - Not seen at Thursday's practice
Downs (ankle) wasn't spotted at Thursday's practice, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Though officially listed as a non-participant in the Colts' first practice of the week, Downs -- who is bouncing back from a high-ankle sprain -- noted that he ran some routes during Wednesday's session, while suggesting that he's "real close" to returning, per Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis. With another 'DNP' looming Thursday, what (if anything) Downs is able to do Friday figures to be pivotal in terms of his chances of suiting up Sunday against the Texans.

JuJu Brents - Missing from injury report
Brents (nose) is not on the Colts' injury report Wednesday.
Impact
Brents has been sidelined by what was described as a nose injury, but the issue will not prevent the Kansas State product from taking the field this week. The second-year pro will be starting at corner opposite Jaylon Jones on Sunday against the Texans.

Trey Sermon - Not on injury report
Sermon (hamstring) is not listed on the Colts' injury report ahead of Sunday's season opener against the Texans.
Impact
Sermon has evidently moved past a hamstring issue that sidelined him last month, and as a result is in line to be available to back up starting RB Jonathan Taylor in Week 1. Also in the team's backfield mix is Tyler Goodson, though neither Sermon or Goodson figure to garner a high volume of weekly touches as long as Taylor is available.

Tanor Bortolini - Past toe issue
Bortolini (toe) was left off the Colts' injury report Wednesday ahead of the team's Week 1 game against the Texans on Sunday.
Impact
The rookie offensive lineman out of Wisconsin has been sidelined for the last couple of weeks due to a toe injury, but it now appears he's moved past the issue. Now that Bortolini is back at full health, he's expected to serve as one of the Colts' top backup offensive linemen in 2024.

Matt Gay - Underwent sports hernia procedure
Gay noted Wednesday that he underwent a procedure to address a sports hernia, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Impact
As a result, Gay doesn't know if he'll be available for Sunday's season opener against Houston, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports. If the veteran kicker ends up sidelined this weekend, the Colts have the option of elevating practice squad member Spencer Shrader ahead of Week 1 action.

Matt Gay - Misses practice Wednesday
Gay (sports hernia) didn't practice Wednesday, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Impact
The report relays that coach Shane Steichen clarified Wednesday that Gay is dealing with a sports hernia issue, not a groin injury. While Steichen wouldn't comment on whether Gay had surgery, he did say the issue is not a long-term concern for the kicker. If Gay is unavailable for Sunday's season opener against the Texans, the Colts can turn to practice squad member Spencer Shrader in Week 1.

Josh Downs - Still not practicing
Downs (ankle) remained sidelined for Wednesday's practice, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
Impact
Downs, who suffered a high-ankle sprain Aug. 7, has two more chances to log practice reps ahead of Sunday's season opener against the Texans. If he ends up being unavailable for the contest, fellow WRs Adonai Mitchell and Alec Pierce would be in store for added opportunities versus Houston behind No. 1 receiver Michael Pittman.

Nick Cross - Officially named Week 1 starter
Colts defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said Tuesday that Cross will start at safety across from Julian Blackmon during Sunday's regular-season opener against the Texans, James Boy...
Impact
Cross entered training camp as the favorite to earn a starting safety gig alongside Blackmon. He spent most of the 2023 campaign as a special-teams contributor before stepping up as a started on defense during the final three games of the season. In those three contests, Cross averaged 6.0 tackles (3.0 solo)
