Jaguars switching from Minshew to Luton at QB against Texans

Ruled out for Week 9 Coach Doug Marrone relayed that Minshew (thumb) won't play Sunday versus the Texans, John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site reports.

Impact It was revealed following the Week 7 loss to the Chargers that Minshew has been dealing with multiple fractures and a sprained ligament in his right thumb since early October. He'll be shut down as a result, and rookie Jake Luton is expected to start against the divisional rival, in which case Mike Glennon would serve as the backup. There's no clear timeline for when Minshew will return. The second-year quarterback produced 1,855 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions while running for 122 yards and a score through the first seven games.

Impact Shortly after the Jaguars headed into their Week 8 bye, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Minshew was revealed to be dealing with multiple fractures and a strained ligament in his right thumb after he was sent in for X-rays. While the team hasn't commented on Minshew's injury nor provided a timeline for his return, the second-year signal-caller doesn't look like he'll be ready to go coming out of the bye. The Jaguars are expected to have the other two quarterbacks on the roster, Mike Glennon and Jake Luton, compete in practice during the upcoming week before head coach Doug Marrone names a starter for the Nov. 8 game versus Houston.

Has so-so showing Sunday Minshew completed 14 of 27 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns while rushing four times for 21 yards during Sunday's 39-29 road defeat to the Chargers.

Impact Prior to the game, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Minshew's job security was thinning, and he didn't exactly help his cause with this Week 7 performance. While he tossed multiple touchdowns for the fifth time and avoided throwing a pick for the third occasion in seven games, he matched his season low in passing yards, and his 51.9 completion percentage stands alone as his worst in a single contest on the campaign. The Jaguars have a bye week on tap, so coach Doug Marrone will have time to evaluate Minshew before making a decision on a Week 9 starter under center.
