GAME LOG

INJURIES

Logs another limited practice Johnson (ankle) was a limited participant at practice Wednesday.
Impact Limited practices have been status quo for Johnson of late, but Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com relays that coach Bill O'Brien noted earlier Wednesday that the running back -- who has missed two straight games -- is "trending in the right direction" for Sunday's game against the Vikings. If Johnson's condition takes a turn for the worse and he ends up missing a third straight contest, starter David Johnson would likely be in store for another massive snap count. David has played 95 and 96 percent of the offensive snaps in Weeks 2 and 3, respectively.

Detroit’s Kenny Golladay and Tampa Bay’s Chris Godwin are a couple of noteworthy receivers returning to action in Sunday’s late games

Inactive Sunday Johnson (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Steelers.
Impact In his continued absence, David Johnson will continue to log the bulk of the Texans' backfield touches in Week 3. After logging a week of limited practices, Duke Johnson is presumably targeting a return to action next Sunday against the Vikings.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Not likely to play Sunday Johnson (ankle) looks like a long-shot to play Sunday against the Steelers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Impact Johnson is listed as questionable after practicing in a limited fashion this past week, but it looks like he needs a bit more time to be ready for action. If he's inactive for Sunday's 1:00 ET kickoff, David Johnson would continue to log the bulk of the Texans' backfield touches in Week 3.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Officially questionable Johnson (ankle) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Steelers.
Impact Johnson managed to log three limited practice sessions this week. Coach Bill O'Brien has already said that the Texans will wait and see how the backup running back feels in Pittsburgh on Sunday before making a final decision on his status, per Drew Dougherty of the Texans' official site. It looks as though Johnson has at least a fair shot to return Week 3, but if he can't go Buddy Howell and Scottie Phillips will be on hand behind David Johnson.

Status uncertain for Week 3 Coach Bill O'Brien said Johnson (ankle) is "trending in the right direction" for Sunday against the Steelers, but the team will wait and see how much he participates at Friday's pr...
Impact O'Brien also said the Texans will have to see how Johnson feels once they get to Pittsburgh, so it's difficult to imagine him avoiding the questionable tag. The 27-year-old was a limited participant at practice Wednesday and Thursday, so barring a setback he should at worst be a game-time decision for Week 3.
SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Still not full-go Johnson (ankle) was a limited participant during Thursday's practice session, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Impact The 27-year-old Johnson has now been limited in back-to-back practices, but he was limited for much of last week as well and ultimately didn't end up playing against the Ravens. His statistical contributions on the season stand at 14 rushing yards on five carries after he was pulled in the third quarter of Houston's season-opening loss due to injury. Johnson will likely have to demonstrate physical improvement from that sprained ankle during practice in order to suit up Week 3 against Pittsburgh's top-ranked rush defense.
SEPTEMBER 24, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Limited in first Week 3 practice Johnson (ankle) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.
Impact Johnson practiced in a limited fashion last week and was ultimately inactive in the Week 2 loss to Baltimore, so he may need to log a full workout Thursday or Friday to have a good chance at playing Sunday in Pittsburgh. While Johnson was sidelined against the Ravens, the Texans didn't make much use of a backup running back, as starter David Johnson played 95 percent of the team's offensive snaps.

Terrible run defense has Houston Texans in 0-2 hole

The Houston Texans have been terrible against the run to start this season and it has left them in an 0-2 hole with a trip to Pittsburgh looming on Sunday

Inactive Sunday Johnson (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Ravens.
Impact In his absence, Buddy Howell and C.J. Prosise are available to work in complementary/change-of-pace roles behind top back David Johnson.

Likely out Sunday Johnson (ankle) isn't expected to play Sunday against the Ravens, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact Coach Bill O'Brien said Friday that the 26-year-old was "trending in the right direction" for Week 2, but it appears he hasn't continued that progression into the weekend. Johnson rushed five times for 14 yards and failed to catch his lone target in the season opener, though Buddy Howell may operate as the team's secondary back

Listed as questionable Johnson (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Ravens after practicing in a limited fashion this week.
Impact Coach Bill O'Brien noted Friday that Johnson, who has been dealing with an ankle sprain, is "trending in the right direction" in advance of Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports. If the running back is able to go Sunday, he'll work in a complementary/change-of-pace role behind David Johnson, who was effective in his debut with the Texans in Week 1's loss to the Chiefs.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Limited practice Thursday Johnson (ankle) remained limited at practice Thursday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Back-to-back limited sessions suggest that Johnson has a chance to play through his ankle issue Sunday against the Ravens, but unless he manages a full practice Friday, the running back seems likely to be listed as questionable for the contest.
SEPTEMBER 17, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Manages to practice Wednesday Johnson (ankle) is participating in Wednesday's practice, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact It seems likely that Johnson will be officially listed as 'limited' when Wednesday's practice report is officially released, but it's nonetheless encouraging to see him handling reps despite still nursing a sprained left ankle sustained Week 1. The 27-year-old backup could have a shot to suit up against the Ravens on Sunday if he's able to continue trending in the right direction.
SEPTEMBER 16, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Labeled day-to-day Coach Bill O'Brien called Johnson (ankle) day-to-day Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Johnson was dubbed week-to-week over the weekend, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network previously reported that he's unlikely for Week 2, but O'Brien's comments now seem to indicate that Johnson has a chance to suit up against the Ravens on Sunday. Count on Wednesday's first practice report of the week to provide more concrete information regarding Johnson's health. Buddy Howell is the favorite to slot in as David Johnson's top backup if the 27-year-old is forced to miss any time.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Unlikely for Week 2 Johnson (ankle) isn't expected to suit up against the Ravens on Sunday, IIan Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact Johnson is considered week-to-week due to a sprained ankle sustained during Thursday's season-opening loss to the Chiefs. Though he appears to have avoided a serious injury, it looks as though the versatile backup is trending in the wrong direction for Week 2. If Johnson is indeed forced to miss Sunday's tilt against Baltimore, David Johnson could see the opportunity for an even larger workload than normal, with Buddy Howell working as his backup. The Texans may also see fit to promote C.J. Prosise from the practice squad.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Considered week-to-week Johnson (ankle) is considered week-to-week, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Johnson sprained his ankle during the third quarter and did not return to Houston's 34-20 loss to Kansas City in Week 1. His availability for Week 2 against the Ravens has not yet been determined. If Johnson is unavailable, David Johnson could get a larger share of playing time, while either Buddy Howell or C.J. Prosise (practice squad) would be the top backup.
SEPTEMBER 13, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Nursing sprained ankle Johnson is dealing with a sprained ankle, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact Johnson was forced out of Thursday night's season opening loss early. It was originally reported as a leg injury, but the more specific issue appears to be with his ankle. He will have extra time to recover, as the Texans do not play again until Sept. 20 against the Ravens. His availability for that contest is seemingly in question at this point. David Johnson would presumably see a larger share of the workload out of the backfield should he ultimately have to sit out.

Downgraded to out Johnson (leg) has been ruled out for the remainder of Thursday's contest.
Impact Johnson left the game early in the third quarter and will not return. If he is forced to miss significant time, David Johnson should see an even larger share of snaps at running back.
SEPTEMBER 11, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Leaves field with leg injury Johnson exited Sunday's contest against the Chiefs with a leg injury and is questionable to return.
Impact Johnson had five carries for 14 yards before leaving the field in the third quarter. As long as he's sidelined, Buddy Howell and Scottie Phillips will serve as the top backups to No. 1 running back David Johnson.
SEPTEMBER 11, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Excited for Year 2 in Houston Johnson says he's much more comfortable in his second year working with coach Bill O'Brien.
Impact Johnson was traded from Cleveland to Houston on Aug. 8 last year, and a hamstring injury prevented him from practicing with his new team until Aug. 20. He went on to spend the entire season in the passing-down half of a timeshare with Carlos Hyde, averaging 4.9 yards on 83 carries and 9.3 yards on 44 receptions. Johnson now finds himself sharing the Houston backfield with another receiving threat rather than a bruiser, after the Texans acquired David Johnson in the offseason. The new-look backfield could lead to Duke seeing fewer targets early on, but it's also worth noting that David has been alternately injured or ineffective for the better part of the past three years. The precise nature of their workload split will be difficult to decipher before Week 1.
