Starting for Prescott in Week 8 Rush will start in place of Dak Prescott (calf) on Sunday in Minnesota, David Moore of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Impact Prescott's availability came down to a pregame warmup as he tends to a right calf strain suffered back in Week 6 at New England. Over the course of the workout, it became increasingly clear that Rush would be the starter, with Rush getting the initial throws and Prescott and Will Grier mixing in behind him, according to Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News. With Prescott officially inactive, Rush will earn his first NFL start. How Rush fares remains to be seen because he has just three career passes and two rushes under his belt, but he did throw for at least 3,100 yards and 23 TDs in each of his final three seasons at Central Michigan from 2014 through 2016.

Impact Even after a Week 7 bye, Prescott -- who is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff -- doesn't appear to have made a full recovery from the strained calf he suffered on the final play of Dallas' overtime win over the Patriots in Week 6. While Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network note that Prescott is pushing to play and will go through his normal pregame warmup routine, the franchise signal-caller was only able to take part in walk-through activities and 7-on-7 drills during practice this week. With that in mind, Dallas could be inclined to take a cautious approach with Prescott if there's any concern about his health coming out of warmups, potentially leaving Rush in line for his first extended regular-season action. Rush has previously made six appearances in his four-plus seasons in the NFL, logging only 29 snaps in total and attempting just three passes.

Making push for backup job Rush could be putting pressure on Garrett Gilbert for the No. 2 QB job behind Dak Prescott (shoulder), Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com reports.

Impact Rush was by far the most effective signal-caller for the Cowboys on Saturday night, completing 10 of 12 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Gilbert, who got the start, completed three of five passes for 30 yards and lost a fumble, and Ben DiNucci was picked off three times by the Texans' second and third-string defenders in the second half. Any camp battle could wind up moot if the team brings in a more established veteran after rosters get cut down across the league, but based on Saturday's showing Rush is making a case to surpass Gilbert on the current depth chart.
