Re-signing with Texans
Kirksey is set to sign a two-year extension to remain with the Texans, Mark Lane of The USA Today reports.
Impact
In his first season with the Texans, Kirksey, who turns 30 in August, recorded 93 tackles -- the most he's put up since 2017 -- over the course of 13 games (12 starts), while adding one interception. He's now in line to retain his starting linebacker spot this coming season, a role that resulted in Kirksey being Houston's defensive signal-caller in 2021.

Leading tackler in finale
Kirksey had eight tackles, two for a loss, and one pass defensed in the 28-25 loss to Tennessee in Week 18.
Impact
Kirksey was one of several defensive players on one-year deals that increased his market value. He tied for second on the team with 93 tackles over 13 games. Kirksey missed time during the middle of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured thumb. Once he returned, the eighth-year linebacker recorded 37 tackles, three passes defensed and a fumble recovery over the final five games. Kamu Grugier-Hill, another linebacker working on a on a one-year contract, was the only Texan to finish with more tackles. Like Grugier-Hill, Kirksey enters the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, and the Texans are expected to make an effort to bring back both.

Returns from COVID list
Kirksey was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
Impact
Kirksey's return will be a boost to the Texans' defense after he missed their Week 15 matchup with Jacksonville. The veteran has barely missed a snap this season when healthy, recording 73 tackles (44 solo), six passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and an interception in 10 games. He'll look to add to those numbers Sunday against the Chargers.

It's unclear whether Kirksey tested positive for the virus, but he'll be sidelined until he clears the health and safety protocols regardless. Kamu Grugier-Hill (illness) is also in the protocols, leaving the Texans short on depth at linebacker.

Marks return with solid performance
Kirksey recorded seven tackles (five solo), one pass defended, and a fumble recovery in Sunday's 31-0 loss to the Colts.
Impact
Kirksey, one day removed from his return off injured reserve, registered one of his better performances of the year as he played on nearly every defensive snap for Houston. The linebacker has now recorded at least one pass defended in five of nine games played and sits at a career high of six on the season. Kirksey should continue to put up solid numbers given his prominent role in stopping both the run and the pass for the Texans defense.

He was unable to practice this week, however, and was declared out for Sunday's game against the Dolphins on Friday. Kirksey will be eligible to return Dec. 5., while Eric Wilson will likely slide into the starting role in the meantime.

Will not play Sunday
Kirksey (thumb) will not play Sunday against the Dolphins.
Impact
Kirksey was able to play Sunday against the Rams after being questionable with a fractured thumb he received in the Texans' Week 7 game against the Cardinals. Despite playing Sunday, Kirksey was unable to log a practice this week. In his absence, Kamu Grugier-Hill will likely step into a larger role.
