Expected back for Week 3
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday that he anticipates Kirk (hamstring) making his team debut Sunday in Jacksonville, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Acquired from the Jaguars in March, Kirk missed the Texans' first two games of the season while he recovered from a hamstring injury, which has kept him from practicing since the end of the preseason. The veteran wideout's condition appears to have improved during his time off, but Kirk will still likely need to upgrade to full participation in practice by Friday in order to receive clearance to play against one of his former teams. The potential return of Kirk to the lineup Sunday could help bolster a Texans passing attack that ranks 28th in the NFL with an average of 166.5 yards per game through the first two weeks.

Set to sit Monday
Kirk (hamstring) has been ruled out for Monday's game versus the Buccaneers.
Impact
Kirk didn't practice all week, and he'll miss a second straight game to start the season. Jayden Higgins, Xavier Hutchinson, Justin Watson and Jaylin Noel all handled additional reps behind star wideout Nico Collins last week, and there figures to be a similar rotation in Week 2. Kirk's next chance to play is Week 3 versus the Jaguars.

Not practicing Friday
Kirk (hamstring) wasn't spotted at Friday's practice, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Impact
Kirk also missed Thursday's session, which gives him one more chance to practice ahead of Monday night's game against the Buccaneers. If Kirk is ruled out for the contest, look for some combo of Xavier Hutchinson, Justin Watson and Jaylin Noel to log added slot reps alongside fellow WRs Nico Collins and Jayden Higgins.

Still not practicing
Kirk (hamstring) didn't practice Thursday.
Impact
Per Sam Warren of the Houston Chronicle, coach DeMeco Ryans noted that both Kirk and Braxton Berrios -- who missed the Texans' season opener with hamstring injuries -- are "doing well on their recovery" and that the team will "see how they go this week" ahead of Monday night's game against the Buccaneers. If Kirk remains sidelined in Week 2, Xavier Hutchinson, Justin Watson and Jaylin Noel would be candidates to absorb slot reps alongside fellow WRs Nico Collins and Jayden Higgins.

Ruled out this week
Kirk (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's season opener versus the Rams.
Impact
After missing practice this week, Kirk was trending in the wrong direction. Now that his Week 1 status has been confirmed, rookie WRs Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel are in a position to see added opportunities this weekend behind top target Nico Collins, with Xavier Hutchinson and Justin Watson also on hand. Looking ahead, Kirk's Week 2 availability remains cloudy, with ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime having previously suggested that it could be a two-week injury for the 28-year-old, while noting that the Texans figure to proceed with caution with the wideout at this stage of the season.

Could miss time with hamstring strain
Kirk is dealing with a strained hamstring that is expected to sideline him Sunday against the Rams, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact
We'll look for official confirmation of Kirk's Week 1 status no later than the release of the Texans' Friday injury report, but Schefter suggests that the wideout could miss time beyond this weekend, with one source estimating that it could be a two-week injury for Kirk. In such a scenario, rookie WRs Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, as well as Xavier Hutchinson would be in line for added opportunities behind Nico Collins.

Not seen at practice Thursday
Kirk (hamstring) wasn't spotted during the media-access portion of practice Thursday, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
After being held out of practice Wednesday, Kirk wasn't present at the start of Thursday's session, which sets the stage for what he does Friday (if anything) to loom large in terms of his chances to play Sunday against the Rams. If Kirk ends up sidelined this weekend, added opportunities behind Nico Collins would be available for rookie WRs Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, as well as Xavier Hutchinson.

DNP due to hamstring injury
Kirk was held out of practice Wednesday due to a hamstring injury.
Impact
Houston acquired Kirk from the Jaguars in early March for a 2026 seventh-round pick, after which he and the Texans reworked his contract by the end of that month. He seemingly locked up the No. 2 WR role behind Nico Collins by mid-August, but a new health concern now may threaten his availability for Week 1 and beyond. Getting back on the practice field Thursday and/or Friday will be key for Kirk's potential to play Sunday at the Rams, but if he's limited or out this weekend, rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel would be in line for more targets from QB C.J. Stroud.

Makes preseason debut
Kirk caught both of his targets for 13 yards in Saturday's preseason win over the Panthers.
Impact
Like No. 1 wideout Nico Collins and starting quarterback C.J. Stroud, Kirk made his preseason debut and played the first two series before calling it a day. Kirk, who was acquired from the Jaguars during the offseason and is locked in as the No. 2 wide receiver, hooked up with Stroud on each possession in what was a successful performance by the first-team offense, working in conjunction with new offensive coordinator and play caller, Nick Caley.

Entrenched as No. 2 WR
Kirk was a standout at joint practices with the Panthers on Thursday and has locked up the No. 2 wide receiver role behind Nico Collins, Cole Thompson of USA Today reports.
Impact
Kirk has demonstrated chemistry with quarterback C.J. Stroud throughout training camp, and per Thompson, he's clearly been the Texans' most consistent wide receiver other than Collins. While it's possible Kirk that rookie wideouts Jayden Higgins (second round) and Jaylin Noel (third round) are able to build steam down the stretch of the regular season and provide increased target competition, at a minimum Kirk is positioned to open Week 1 in a valuable starting role as one of Stroud's top reads, and likely while dominating slot reps. Kirk is entering his age-29 campaign and playing for a new contract.

Taking part in practice
Kirk (collarbone) is participating in on-field positional drills at OTAs on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Impact
Kirk no longer looks hindered by the broken collarbone that ended his 2024 season in Jacksonville after just eight games. The Texans traded for Kirk early March then selected two rookies out of Iowa State in the early rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft, in the form of Jayden Higgins (second round) and Jaylin Noel (third round). Even with Tank Dell (knee) nursing a serious enough injury that he could miss most, or all, of the upcoming season, Higgins and Noel represent notable competition for targets behind No. 1 wideout Nico Collins. At 6-foot-4, 212 pounds with 4.47 speed, Higgins is a physical clone of Collins capable of joining him on the boundary, while Noel's smaller frame and 4.39 speed seemingly positions him to begin as a deep threat. That leaves Kirk with a clear path to dominate slot reps, with the catch being that Noel could eventually compete for such snaps, and Houston's other wideouts could emerge as higher-priority targets for C.J. Stroud.

Ticketed for slot work
Kirk (collarbone) figures to spend a lot of time in the slot after Houston drafted 6-foot-4 wideout Jayden Higgins at No. 34 overall, The Athletic reports.
Impact
Kirk might've taken most of his snaps in the slot anyway, so it's hard to spin the NFL Draft as a win for his fantasy value, especially after the Texans doubled down on Iowa State receivers and took Jaylin Noel in the third round. There's suddenly a lot of target competition behind No. 1 receiver Nico Collins, who averaged 83.8 yards and 8.3 targets per game in 2024 despite playing less than half the available snaps in three of his 12 regular-season games. The upside scenario for Kirk's volume entails Collins continuing to struggle with soft-issue injuries while the rookies fail to develop as expected. The downside scenario features Kirk becoming somewhat of an afterthought and perhaps even losing slot snaps to Noel eventually. Kirk has one year left on his contract and should be healthy for training camp, after a broken collarbone ended his final season with the Jaguars (who subsequently traded him to Houston for a seventh-round pick). The Texans already restructured Kirk's contract to convert his non-guaranteed salary into a guaranteed bonus, which rules out any chance of him being released before Week 1.
