Not returning Sunday
Akers (ribs) has been ruled out of Sunday's game in Philadelphia, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Akers took the first three carries for the Rams before heading to the sidelines, accumulating 13 yards on the ground. With the rookie second-rounder unable to return, Malcolm Brown will have more opportunity for early down and short-yardage reps, while Darrell Henderson takes on more of the pass-catching burden out of the team's backfield.

Suffers rib injury
Akers left Sunday's game at Philadelphia due to a rib injury, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Akers played 24 of the Rams' 73 offensive snaps Week 1 against the Cowboys, turning 14 carries into 39 yards and his sole target into a four-yard catch. The 2020 second-round pick opened his second career game with three rushes for 13 yards before heading to the sideline on the team's first possession. With Akers questionable to return, L.A.'s backfield has been whittled down to Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson.

Rams' new defense gets off to strong start in beating Dallas
The Los Angeles Rams saw some encouraging early returns from Sean McVay’s offseason decision to make systemic changes to what was already a pretty good defense

Held in check in debut
Akers rushed 14 times for 39 yards and had a four-yard reception during Sunday's 20-17 win over Dallas. He played 24 of 73 offensive snaps.
Impact
While the rookie started for the Rams, he never got it going against Dallas and quickly played second fiddle to veteran Malcolm Brown. Brown was the superior back Sunday and finished with 110 yards from scrimmage and scored both of Los Angeles' touchdowns. In fact, it's a bit discouraging that Akers struggled while Brown made it look relatively easy against a mediocre Cowboys' defense. However, don't forget, Brown also scored two touchdowns in Week 1 last year and then was hardly a fantasy factor thereafter. Looking ahead to a Week 2 matchup against Philadelphia, Akers should probably be viewed as a risky start in most settings -- especially since fellow running back Darrell Henderson will likely be more involved in the game plan after missing a lot of time during training camp and playing only five snaps Sunday.

At bottom of depth chart
Akers is listed as the No. 3 running back behind Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson (hamstring) on the Rams' first unofficial depth chart of the 2020 season.
Impact
"Unofficial" is the key word here and should be taken with a grain of salt. As a five-year veteran and a player about to embark on his fourth season with coach Sean McVay, Brown had a clear path to the top job. Having said that, McVay himself told Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News on Monday that he intends to use a three-back rotation, with touches to be handed out based on how Week 1 prep goes and how Sunday's game versus the Cowboys proceeds. Akers may have the most promise of the trio, but he'll seemingly work behind Brown and perhaps Henderson right away, based on how the latter's hamstring injury holds up this week.

Part of three-man RB committee
Rams head coach Sean McVay said Monday he expects to use a three-man backfield "rotation" consisting of Akers, Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson (hamstring) in Los Angeles' Sept....
Impact
The three-man committee is contingent on Henderson receiving clearance for Week 1, something McVay said he's "optimistic" will happen. Because Henderson missed extensive practice time with the injury, Akers and Brown appear to be the better bets to handle shares of snaps and touches in the season opener as the Rams transition to life after Todd Gurley. Running backs coach Thomas Brown previously said in August that he would like to see one player emerge as a "clear-cut guy who takes the majority of the reps," any battle for the lead role will extend into the regular season. Akers, a rookie second-round pick, possesses the physical qualities to eventually claim a three-down job. The Florida State product submitted a 4.47-second 40-yard dash time while checking in at 5-foot-10 and 227 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine, and he proved effective as a receiver during his final year with the Seminoles, hauling in 30 of 42 targets for 225 yards and four touchdowns.

Potential time-share
Akers and Malcolm Brown have been taking first-team running back reps for the Rams of late, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
Impact
As the regular season approaches, the Rams backfield situation remains fluid and has the air of a time-share to start the campaign. Aside from Akers and Brown, Darrell Henderson also figures to factor in once he bounces back from a hamstring issue. In his latest roster projection, Eric D. Williams of Sports Illustrated marks Brown as the team's starter, but when it comes Week 1 that could simply infer that Brown -- who has been with the franchise since 2015 -- might take the first snap out of the team's backfield, with Akers (and possibly Henderson) rotating in until a hot hand emerges. Akers -- a 2020 second-rounder -- still carries the most fantasy upside of the three, but he won't be handed anything following an unusual offseason, especially with a more experienced player like Brown also in the mix.
