INJURIES

Needs to improve off ball Coach Sean McVay said Wednesday that Akers needs to improve without the ball in his hands to earn more playing time, Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports.
Impact Akers has been buried on the Rams' running back depth chart behind Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown for most of the season. Though Henderson hurt his thigh in last week's loss to the Dolphins, the injury is believed to be minor, so Akers will likely continue to serve as the No. 3 option coming out of the team's bye against Seattle in Week 10. Struggles in pass protection often limits rookie running backs' playing time, and that appears to be the case with rookie second-round pick out of Florida State.
NOVEMBER 4, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Shows off big-play potential Akers rushed nine times for 35 yards and turned his only target into a 19-yard reception during Sunday's 28-17 loss to Miami.
Impact Akers broke a 10-yard gain on his first carry of the game and also looked dangerous while breaking three tackles on his lone reception. The rookie is ready for an expanded role, and while there's still a lot competition in the Los Angeles backfield, sophomore Darrell Henderson sustained a thigh injury Sunday. Even if Henderson is ready to go in Week 10, it would be surprising if Akers didn't begin to see more consistent opportunities following the Rams' Week 9 bye. There's no questioning his talent.

Hardly plays against Bears Akers only played three offensive snaps and his lone carry was negated by a penalty during Monday's 24-10 win over Chicago.
Impact The rookie has now watched in consecutive games while fellow running backs Darrell Henderson and Malcolm Brown have handled the load for the Rams. Henderson rushed 15 times for 64 yards Monday, and Brown turned 10 carries into 57 yards and a score. Head coach Sean McVay discussed incorporating Akers into the offense more after the rookie piled up 63 yards on just nine carries in Week 5, but it hasn't come to fruition. It might not, either. Henderson and Brown are morphing into a difficult one-two punch to contain, and Los Angeles looks like an NFC contender.

Coachspeak proves false Akers played just a single snap during Sunday's 24-16 loss to San Francisco.
Impact After head coach Sean McVay suggested the rookie was in line for an increased workload, Akers played a single snap Sunday and didn't touch the football. It was a bit surprising, but Los Angeles only had possession for 8:37 in the first half, and No. 1 back Darrell Henderson rushed just six times. The Rams never had an opportunity to find the offensive rhythm to enable them to turn to Akers. Making matters worse, Henderson impressed again with 14 rushes for 88 yards, and veteran running back Malcolm Brown looks locked into a consistent role as a trusted pass protector. While Akers remains an intriguing long-term fantasy asset, he's also far from a reliable option at this stage of the campaign.

Heading for heavier workload Akers (ribs), who carried nine times for 61 yards in the Rams' 30-10 win over the Washington Football Team on Sunday, is slated for more work in a Week 6 road matchup versus the 49...
Impact Coach Sean McVay confirmed as much in his postgame press conference after Akers was the Rams' most efficient runner based on a yards-per-carry basis Sunday. A 46-yard run accounted for a bulk of Akers' production, but the 2020 second-round pick nevertheless appears set for more opportunity, albeit in a tough matchup against San Francisco's stingy run defense.

Cleared for return Akers (ribs) was a full practice participant Friday and is set to play in Sunday's game against Washington, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
Impact Akers started the week as a limited participant before logging back-to-back full sessions Thursday and Friday. He's thus set to return from a two-game absence, though it isn't exactly clear what his workload will look like. Darrell Henderson took most of the carries the past two weeks, with Malcolm Brown getting the majority of targets and passing-down snaps. Akers was actually the Week 2 starter, taking three carries on the opening drive before a rib-cartilage injury knocked him out of the game and allowed for Henderson's emergence. Relying on any of the three backs in a Week 5 lineup requires a high tolerance for risk.

No practice limitations Thursday Akers (ribs) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Akers has now resumed practicing in full for the first time since he was forced out of the Rams' Week 2 contest against the Eagles, a development which appears to set the stage for him to return to the field at Washington on Sunday. Coach Sean McVay said Akers is "looking good" for Week 5, per Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News. The rookie second-round pick worked in a timeshare with Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson before being injured, so he'll likely resume operating in a crowded committee upon suiting back up Sunday.
OCTOBER 9, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Practice reps capped Wednesday Akers (ribs) practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Impact As he gears up for a potential return to action Sunday at Washington, Akers had his practice reps capped, but he still has two more sessions this week to move up to full participation. If he gains clearance to play, he may serve in some sort of timeshare with Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson, who have received 21 and 30 touches, respectively, during Akers' two-game absence.
OCTOBER 7, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Setting up for return to action Coach Sean McVay expects Akers (ribs) to return Sunday at Washington, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Akers has missed the past two games due to separated rib cartilage sustained Week 2. He'll have a chance to show he's made progress in his recovery with an appearance at practice Wednesday. During Akers' absence, Malcolm Brown has played 13 more offensive snaps than Darrell Henderson, but the latter has out-touched the former, 30-21. It'll be interesting to see the breakdown of reps if Akers is able to gain clearance to play this weekend.

Won't play this week Akers (ribs) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
Impact Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic notes that Akers did some work on a side field with the training staff during Friday's practice, so he at least seems to be making a degree of progress. A return to practice with his teammates would be the next step, perhaps setting him up to play Week 5 against Washington. The Rams figure to use Darrell Henderson as their lead runner against the Giants on Sunday, with Malcolm Brown also in line to get some playing time. The backfield could get messy again once Akers is able to return from his rib cartilage injury.
