Coming off bench in opener Lively isn't in the starting five for Wednesday's season opener against the Spurs.

Impact Lively had started for Dallas in the preseason and was projected to be the team's starting center, but Maxi Kleber will start over him Wednesday. Lively will likely still see an extended run off the bench and could earn his way into the starting unit with solid play to start the season.

Nearly perfect from field Lively accounted for 14 points (6-7 FG, 2-2 FT), five rebounds, two assists and a block across 24 minutes in Friday's 114-104 preseason win over the Pistons.

Impact Lively was a lottery pick in the 2023 NBA Draft but has impressed the coaching staff enough to lock up a starting role for Opening Night. His preseason numbers aren't eye-popping by any means, and he's expected to hold a secondary role on offense at the beginning of the regular season, but he made his presence felt here while showing his two-way potential.

Impact Kidd didn't commit to Lively or Olivier-Maxence Prosper maintaining spots in the starting five heading into the regular season, but both rookie first-round selections will get the chance to stake claims to spots on the top unit. If Lively is able to established himself as Dallas' top center, he likely wouldn't be in store for much usage while sharing the floor with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but the 19-year-old could profile as an effective rim runner who converts the post touches he does receive at an elite rate. The 7-foot-1 Lively was also one of the NCAA's premier shot blockers during his lone season at Duke, swatting away 2.4 shots in just 20.6 minutes per appearance.
