Fifth-Place at Charlotte Roval McDowell finished fifth in the Bank of America ROVAL 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

Impact The veteran's road racing skills are above average and so was McDowell's performance Sunday in Charlotte. The Spire Motorsports driver started sixth on the grid and battled among the Top 10 for much of this 109 lap race. McDowell was unable to forge any laps led but he'd push forward in stage 3 to grapple with the leaders. The driver of the No. 71 Chevrolet would keep Ryan Preece behind him to earn a strong fifth-place finish. It was just his third Top 5 of the season.

Leads Darlington Practice McDowell was fastest in Happy Hour practice for the Cook Out Southern 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway on Saturday. He turned a fast lap of 169.531 mph.

Impact In a bit of a surprising development, all three Spire Motorsports cars would look strong in this lone practice ahead of pole qualifying at Darlington Raceway. McDowell would show the way with the only lap in excess of 169 mph. He would edge teammate, Justin Haley, for the fastest lap of the Track Too Tough to Tame.
