This strategy fumble would cause Piastri to pit at the end of lap 1 for slick tyres but he would lose a lot of track position. Later in the race the McLaren youngster would collide with Alex Albon and put the Williams driver out of the race. The stewards would assess a 10-second time penalty to Piastri and that would mire him in the field. He would make a couple late overtakes but could only achieve P11 by the checkered flag.

Impact The McLaren youngster would start seventh on the grid after a somewhat disappointing qualifying session. Piastri would get off to a strong start and work his way up the order throughout the grand prix. Good pit strategy would get him in position to challenge for a podium spot and he would secure it on the penultimate lap by overtaking Charles Leclerc after an unfortunate spin. That would put Piastri in P3 and give McLaren a double podium day in Miami.
