F1 title comes down to a three-way showdown in Abu Dhabi

Max Verstappen stayed in the title hunt with a Qatar win aided by a lap-7 safety car and timely pit stop
2 DAYS AGO • Associated Press
Runner-up Finish in Qatar PIastri finished second in the Qatar Grand Prix Formula 1 race at the Lusail International Circuit on Sunday.
Impact A clean start from pole would allow Piastri to lead the opening 23 laps. He would have a comfortable margin but the team's blunder of keeping him out during a lap 7 safety car would ultimately undo his chances to win Sunday in Qatar. He and Verstappen would exchange the lead during alternate pit stops in the second-half of the race but eventually the Red Bull star would take control. Piastri would cut into his lead down the stretch but still come up 8-seconds short at the checkered flag for the runner-up finish.

Grabs Crucial Qatar Pole Piastri claimed a crucial pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix, denying McLaren team mate Lando Norris top spot as Max Verstappen made it all three title rivals at the front of t...
Impact Both McLarens have been the class of the field this weekend so it was no surprise to see it come down to a duel between Norris and Piastri in Q3. Norris would set the initial marker to beat early in the session. However, Piastri would later best that with a lap of 1:19.387 of the Doha road circuit. Norris would have to abort one late flying lap and that would end up being the difference. The young driver edged his older teammate by one-tenth to claim pole for Sunday in Qatar. Piastri will be the driver to beat in this late-season clash.

Wins Qatar Sprint Piastri stormed to a commanding victory in the Qatar Sprint, comprehensively beating George Russell and the second McLaren of Lando Norris in the 19-lap event, Formula1.com reports...
Impact Piastri got away well at the lights out and the real battle was behind the McLaren star for P2 through P4. As those battles raged on, Piastri built his lead. He would race out to nearly a 5-second advantage over the 19-lap event. The only bump in the road for Piastri was some tyre degradation near the end that would keep Russell within eyesight of his McLaren. The young driver will now shift focus towards qualifying well for Sunday's Qatar Grand Prix.

Claims Sprint Pole in Qatar Piastri claimed a crucial pole position for the Qatar Sprint, beating George Russell and McLaren team mate Lando Norris to the top spot, Formula1.com reports.
Impact The pace of Friday's lone practice would show up for Piastri in Sprint qualifying. The McLaren youngster would easily advance into Q3 and put up two strong flying laps to lead the timing sheets in the final round. Piastri would edge Russell by just 0.032-seconds with his fastest lap of 1:20.055 of the Lusail International Circuit in Doha. He'll be the driver to beat in Saturday's Sprint in Qatar.

Leads FP1 in Qatar Piastri set the pace late on in the only practice session for the Qatar Grand Prix, beating his team mate Lando Norris and Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso to the top spot, Formula1....
Impact This lone practice of the weekend ahead of Sprint qualifying would see a combination of data gathering and mock qualifying runs. Once drivers got down to business on soft tyres we would see the McLarens move to the top of the timing sheets. Piastri would post a lap of 1:20.924 to show the way. He would be just 0.058-seconds faster than Norris to top the session. Piastri has been in a bit of a rut lately but looks like a solid bet to get on the podium Sunday in Qatar.

Skid Plate Disqualification McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix after both their cars were found not to comply with technical regulations, Formu...
Impact Piastri would seemingly grab a good fourth-place result in Las Vegas. However, the FIA would find that his and his teammate's machines would have excessive wear to the rear skid plates. This breach of technical regs would wipe out Piastri's P4 and he would be disqualified as a result. It comes as a huge blow in the driver standings as Max Verstappen draws even with PIastri in the points as a result of his victory at Las Vegas.

Contact with Antonelli Piastri finished fifth in the Sao Paulo Grand Prix Formula 1 race at the Interlagos Circuit on Sunday afternoon.
Impact Piastri would start fourth on the grid and look to makeup for the disastrous start to his weekend in Brazil. The young driver would have problems early as he would make contact with Kimi Antonelli after the restart for Gabriel Bortoleto's early-race crash. Piastri would later receive a 10-second time penalty for that collision. He would race P2 for the middle portion of the grand prix before taking the lead briefly prior to his lap 38 pit stop. Piastri would serve his penalty and rejoin the order in P7. He would once again race up to P2 for a second pit stop that would see him settle into fifth-place down the stretch.

Hard Crash in Brazil Piastri crashed out early in the Formula 1 Sprint for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Saturday at the Interlagos Circuit.
Impact Wet conditions would make this Sprint race quite treacherous. Things would start well enough but Piastri would find trouble within the opening laps when he would find the kerbs in turn 3 wet and slick. The McLaren youngster would slide off hard into the barriers. Nico Hulkenberg and Franco Colapinto would also go off in the same corner just moments later. The mess would require a red-flag period to clean up and Piastri's Sprint was finished. He took a major hit in terms of the championship due to the early retirement.

P5 in Mexico Grand Prix Piastri finished fifth in the Mexico City Grand Prix Formula 1 race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on Sunday afternoon.
Impact A somewhat disappointing qualifying effort would put Piastri seventh on the starting grid. A two-stop strategy and opening on soft tyres would set the stage for a climb through the field. The McLaren youngster would lose a couple spots on the opening lap chaos and reside briefly in P9. He would spend the rest of the grand prix battling back to the front. Late overtakes of Esteban Ocon and George Russell would put him hot on the trail of Oliver Bearman. However, he could not catch the Haas rookie and would have to settle for fifth-place in Mexico City.

Top-5 Battle at COTA Piastri finished fifth in the United States Grand Prix Formula 1 race at Circuit of the Americas on Sunday afternoon.
Impact The McLaren youngster had a tough weekend in Austin but would overcome some obstacles to grab a Top-5 finish in the United States Grand Prix. Piastri would overtake George Russell in the opening lap and that would anchor him in P5 the rest of the way. The young driver would challenge and almost catch Lewis Hamilton on the last lap but that effort would fall just short at the checkered flag for a P5 finish at Circuit of the Americas.

Loses Battle with Teammate Piastri finished fourth in the Singapore Grand Prix Formula 1 race at the Marina Bay Circuit on Sunday.
Impact Piastri would line up third on the grid in Sunday's grand prix on the Marina Bay Circuit. The young McLaren driver would be quickly jumped after the lights out by his teammate, Lando Norris, and slip to P4 after banging wheels with Norris. Piastri would have to settle down from there and race hard to his lap 26 pit stop. He'd lead a couple laps while Russell pitted earlier, but that would be the limit of Piastri's time at the front. Piastri would rejoin P4 and race from there to the checkered flag within sight of Norris but 2-seconds out of reach.

Impact With the floodlights on and a bit cooler temperatures than the day's earlier session, conditions were more like what we'll see in Sunday's grand prix. Fernando Alonso would be the early pace setter. However, Piastri would drop the lap of 1:30.714, best of the day to top the timing sheets despite stoppages for incidents on the track. He would edge Isack Hadjar by just over a tenth to lead the way. Piastri will be a top contender to win Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix.

Crash and DNF at Baku City Circuit Piastri crashed and finished 20th in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Formula 1 race at the Baku City Circuit on Sunday afternoon.
Impact The McLaren star would have an incredibly tough day on the streets of Azerbaijan. Piastri would appear to jump the start when the lights out occurred but then he'd seemingly stall for a few moments. The field behind him would rocket past and Piastri would drop to P20 from his starting spot of ninth on the grid. He would appear to lock up in turn 5 and then crash hard into the barriers bringing out the safety car on the opening lap. Piastri's day would be finished with an early retirement and P20 finish.
