Drops to 10th after penalty Verstappen finished 10th in the Spanish Grand Prix F1 race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday. Impact Verstappen was in an interesting strategic matchup with both McLaren drivers for much of the race, as he employed a three-stop strategy as opposed to two for the Papaya. He was going to be on the losing end of that battle, but he still looked to be set for a return to the podium. That changed when Kimi Antonelli suffered an engine failure, resulting in a safety car that bunched up the field and also caused most teams to pit at least one of their drivers. Verstappen was forced to utilize hard tires, his only set remaining, putting him at a disadvantage relative to both Charles Leclerc and George Russell. In a battle with the latter, Verstappen was asked to give back P4 in the final laps after gaining an advantage by going off track, but Verstappen instead seemingly intentionally drove into the side of the Mercedes and incurred a 10-second penalty that resulted in his worst finish of the year.
