INJURIES

Back on bench Monday Dezenzo is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers.
Impact Dezenzo will hit the bench after he picked up starts in the corner outfield in each of the last four games while going 5-for-15 at the plate. With Brendan Rodgers' grip on the everyday role at second base starting to slip, Jose Altuve has seen more time in the infield of late, which has opened the door for Dezenzo to earn more playing time in the outfield.

Playing time picking up Dezenzo went 1-for-4 on Saturday against the Royals.
Impact Dezenzo has started four of Houston's last five games, with his only absence caused by a thumb injury. He's hit well in the small sample, delivering six hits across 14 at-bats with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. Dezenzo has played at first base and both corner outfield spots rather than having one defensive home, so this could be a temporary move. However, Houston is trying to jumpstart its offense, and Dezenzo has delivered.

RBI single in return Dezenzo went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and a run scored in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Blue Jays.
Impact Dezenzo returned Wednesday from a one-game absence due to a thumb injury, and he gave the Astros a two-run lead in the second inning on a single that brought Yainer Diaz home. Dezenzo has gone 5-for-7 with one walk, three runs scored and two RBI over his last two games.

Impact Dezenzo jammed his thumb on a slide into second base in Monday's game and didn't play Tuesday, but he's feeling well enough to give it a go as the Astros attempt to complete the sweep. Cam Smith is getting a night off.

Cracks Opening Day roster Astros manager Joe Espada said Tuesday that Dezenzo has made the Opening Day roster, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Impact With Christian Walker (oblique) expected to be fine for Opening Day and Jose Altuve and Cam Smith claiming the corner outfield jobs, Dezenzo wouldn't appear to be in line for much playing time. His bat has potential, however, making him worth keeping an eye on should circumstances force him into the lineup regularly.

Back in lineup Thursday Dezenzo (jaw) is in the lineup for Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Impact After being struck in the face by a groundball Tuesday, Dezenzo was diagnosed with TMJ sprain. However, he was cleared of a concussion and will be able to make a quick turnaround, continuing his bid for a roster spot. The 24-year-old is having a great spring, batting .378 with three doubles, two homers and six RBI across 15 exhibition games.

Expected to play Thursday Astros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday that Dezenzo (jaw) is expected to return to Grapefruit League action Thursday versus the Marlins, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact Dezenzo suffered a TMJ sprain on the left side of his jaw after getting hit in the head by a groundball Tuesday. He will undergo concussion testing just to be safe, but the expectation is that he will be fine. Dezenzo is competing for a reserve role with Houston.

Impact Interestingly, Dezenzo's left side took the most damage even though he was hit on the right side of his face. The 24-year-old was also evaluated and cleared for a concussion, and he's slated to undergo further testing on his jaw Wednesday. Dezenzo has been great in spring training so far, slashing .378/.415/.615 with two homers and six RBI through 39 plate appearances.

Impact Dezenzo was able to walk off the field on his own, though he was visibly bothered by his jaw after getting hit. The Astros will take a look at him to make sure he didn't suffer any significant damage and should offer an update on his status relatively soon.

Versatility could land roster spot Dezenzo could make the Astros' Opening Day roster, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Dezenzo has racked up 33 at-bats and 34 plate appearances this spring while playing at a combination of first base and both corner outfield spots. He's struck out at a 26.5 percent clip but also has four extra-base hits, and manager Joe Espada has noted the positive overall impression Dezenzo has made on the club. Even so, the status of Christian Walker (oblique) could ultimately dictate Dezenzo's fate to begin the campaign.
MARCH 16, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Will play left field this spring Astros manager Joe Espada said Saturday at the team's FanFest event that Dezenzo will play a lot in left field during spring training, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Impact An infielder by trade, Dezenzo's experience in left field is limited, though he did start three games there last season at Triple-A Sugar Land and played eight games in the outfield in the Puerto Rican Winter League. Left field currently looks to be Dezenzo's best shot at playing time with the Astros, although that could change if Jose Altuve moves there to accommodate the signing of Alex Bregman.
JANUARY 27, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Summoned from minors The Astros recalled Dezenzo from Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Impact He's taking the roster spot vacated by fellow rookie Shay Whitcomb, who was sent down. Dezenzo has slashed only .212/.255/.308 with one home run in 17 games with the Astros this season. It's possible he'll get a little playing time versus lefties in the final weekend.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Dispatched to Triple-A Dezenzo was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday.
Impact Dezenzo had a max exit velocity of 109.1 mph and hit a homer in 55 plate appearances with the big club, but he was largely overmatched. The hulking 6-foot-4 corner infielder hit .212 with a 32.7 percent strikeout rate and 5.5 percent walk rate while playing sparingly after an Aug. 6 promotion.
SEPTEMBER 6, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Knocks in two Dezenzo went 1-for-4 with two RBI on Wednesday against the Reds.
Impact Dezenzo drew only his second start against a right-handed pitcher in the team's last seven games. Despite coming through with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning, he's struggled through his first 55 plate appearances in the majors, striking out at a 32.7 percent clip while hitting only .212.
SEPTEMBER 5, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Playing time dwindling Dezenzo is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Red Sox, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact It's the third straight game on the bench for Dezenzo, who has started just three of the last nine tilts and just one of the last seven against right-handed pitching. Yainer Diaz will play first base in Wednesday's series finale, while Victor Caratini will do the catching.
AUGUST 21, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Out of Tuesday's lineup Dezenzo is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Impact Dezenzo has a .161/.212/.290 slash line and 33.3 percent strikeout rate in his first nine big-league games and will take a seat for Tuesday's contest. Yordan Alvarez is serving as the designated hitter while Mauricio Dubon receives a start in left field.
AUGUST 20, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Idle again Dezenzo is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rays, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
