Joins big-league club Machin was recalled from the alternate training site Friday, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Impact The 27-year-old failed to make the Opening Day roster but will join the team a couple weeks into the season. Stephen Piscotty was placed on the paternity list in a corresponding move, so it could be a short stint in the majors for Machin.

Optioned to Triple-A Machin was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday.

Impact Machin made a strong push for an Opening Day roster spot early in spring training, but he won't break camp with the team after he hit .271 with eight RBI and seven runs in 22 Cactus League games. The 27-year-old appeared in 24 major-league contests last year and hit .206 with two doubles and 11 runs.

Making strong case early Machin, who went 2-for-2 with a run in a Cactus League win over the Indians on Sunday, is now hitting .417 (5-for-12) with two RBI and two runs across his first six spring games.

Impact After a five-year minor-league career that included several impressive stints at the plate, Machin made his big-league debut in 2020 with the Athletics and limped to a .206/.296/.238 line across 71 plate appearances. However, much like during a 2020 Cactus League tenure during which he made an impression with a .308 average (4-for-13), three RBI, six walks and two runs, Machin is finding a way to consistently get on base early this spring. The 27-year-old's prowess at the plate thus far is a welcome complement to the defensive versatility he displayed while filling in at all four infield spots last season, getting his quest for a utility spot on the Opening Day roster off to a good start.

Astros and A's add pitching to AL Division Series rosters

The Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics have each added pitchers to their rosters for their AL Division Series in Los Angeles

OCTOBER 5, 2020 • Associated Press

Dropped from playoff roster Machin will not be a part of the A's roster for the ALDS against the Astros, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Impact Machin didn't make an appearance during the AL Wild Card Round, so it's not hard to see why he wouldn't be considered an important part of the team for Oakland's next series. Reliever Jordan Weems was added in his place.

Benched in second straight Machin is out of the lineup for the first game of Monday's doubleheader with the Mariners.

Impact Machin had started in 12 of the Athletics' previous 15 games while Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman missed time due to injuries, but the rookie's run of regular playing time looks to be over. Though Chapman has been ruled out for the season after undergoing hip surgery, the Athletics don't appear to be view Machin as a viable everyday option at the hot corner. Instead, look for Oakland to give the newly signed Jake Lamb a trial as the main lefty-hitting option at the position, while the right-handed Nate Orf fills the short side of a platoon. Now on the bench for the second game in a row, the lefty-hitting Machin is somewhat redundant after the addition of Lamb.

Sitting Sunday Machin is not in Sunday's lineup against the Rangers.

Impact The Rule 5 draftee is hitting .250 with more walks (six) than strikeouts (four) in 32 at-bats this month, and he's coming off a busy Saturday twin bill in which he went a combined 1-for-5 with a double, two base on balls and three runs. While he is sitting in this one, his playing time is trending up with Matt Chapman (hip) and Chad Pinder (hamstring) both potentially done for the season.

Productive as Chapman fill-in Machin drew the start at third base in place of Matt Chapman (hip) in Wednesday's win over the Astros and went 0-for-2 with two walks while scoring the game-tying run.

Impact The versatile Machin had been identified as one of the possible fill-ins for Chapman during his absence, and manager Bob Melvin slotted him in there for Wednesday's contest. Machin has become increasingly productive with his starting opportunities recently -- he's now reached safely in eight straight games dating back to Aug. 26 and is hitting a solid .292 (7-for-24) over that span -- and it's telling Melvin is apparently endeavoring to keep his bat in the lineup after Machin's stint as the primary starting shortstop while Marcus Semien was out with a side injury came to a close.

Picks up three hits Machin went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a double in a 5-4 loss to the Astros in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Impact Machin hit a leadoff single in the third inning and score on a Tony Kemp sacrifice fly. The double was Machin's first extra-base hit in 15 games this season. He's slashing .237/.310/.263 across 42 plate appearances. He's scored five runs, but he has yet to record an RBI.

Could benefit from Chapman absence Machin, who drew a second consecutive start at shortstop Monday, is also a candidate to see time at third base while Matt Chapman (hip) remains sidelined, Martin Gallegos of MLB.co...

Impact Machin has filled in for Marcus Semien (side) the last two games, but he could also find himself putting in some time at third base in place of Chapman, who, like Semien, isn't expected to require a stint on the injured list. The hot corner is actually a position Machin is more familiar with, having logged five games there already this season, the most of any position.

Draws start at shortstop Machin logged his first major-league start at shortstop in a loss to the Padres on Friday, going 1-for-3.

Impact Marcus Semien (side) isn't expected to be out for an inordinate amount of time, but manager Bob Melvin previously announced he'd utilize Machin and Chad Pinder in a platoon at shortstop until the veteran was ready to return to action. The left-handed-hitting Machin drew the first starting opportunity upon the Athletics' resumption of play Friday with right-hander Zach Davies on the hill for San Diego and managed to hit safely for the third time in the last four starts, a stretch that dates back to Aug. 17.

Shortstop duties on tap Machin is expected to form the left-handed side of a platoon with Chad Pinder at shortstop while Marcus Semien (side) remains sidelined, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Impact While Semien isn't expected to go on the injured list, the discomfort he's feeling could potentially sideline him for multiple contests once the Athletics resume play Friday. Therefore, Machin could be in line for some shortstop duty, a position he's yet to log any time in at the big-league level. Machin garnered a spot on the Opening Day roster with a strong spring training and summer camp, but he's slashing just .136/.208/.136 across 24 plate appearances thus far in 2020.

Laces first big-league hit Machin started at designated hitter in Saturday's win over the Giants and went 1-for-2 with a run.

Impact Machin put together a solid offensive resume at the upper levels of the minors the last couple of seasons, but he'd yet to collect a hit in sparse playing time with the Athletics until his leadoff hit in the third inning. The 26-year-old eventually scored on Marcus Semien's home run later in the frame, but he's logged just 11 plate appearances overall in the five games he's appeared in thus far.

Not playing much Machin is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros.

Impact The Athletics' second-base situation looked to be wide open heading into Opening Day, but manager Bob Melvin has largely leaned on a platoon of Tony Kemp and Chad Pinder at the position thus far. That's left Machin and Franklin Barreto on the outside looking in for playing time, as the duo has combined to make two starts through the Athletics' first 16 games. Machin is still looking for his first MLB hit after getting off to an 0-for-7 start at the dish.

Misses cut Neuse did not make the Athletics' 30-man roster.

Impact Franklin Barreto, Tony Kemp and Chad Pinder all made the team, so there weren't going to be at-bats available at second base and Matt Chapman is a true everyday player at third base, so Neuse got squeezed out of the equation. Vimael Machin also made the roster ahead of Neuse as a utility player. Neuse will continue to work at Oakland's satellite camp until a need arises.

Outlook for playing time solid Machin remains a strong candidate to see playing time at second base this coming season despite a logjam at the position, Alex Coffey of The Athletic reports. "Recently, (Vimael) M...

Impact For most of spring training and the subsequent three-month-plus shutdown, the prevailing wisdom was that Franklin Barreto and Tony Kemp would operate in a platoon at the keystone on the majority of days. The trade of Jorge Mateo to the Padres then seemed to clear a path for Machin to be the third option while also filling in occasionally elsewhere, but Melvin recently clarified the situation isn't as cut and dried. The Athletics skipper confirmed earlier this week that Chad Pinder will also see time at second, and he heaped plenty of praise on both Barreto and Kemp in his comments to reporters Monday, adding that there may not be a "final choice" for the position at any point during the season. For his part, Machin's impressive summer camp, which is an extension of a strong Cactus League stint that saw him hit .333 (10-for-30), his ability to also man all three outfield spots and Melvin's comments all appear to have the versatile 26-year-old in an excellent position to secure an Opening Day roster spot.

JULY 15, 2020 • ROTOWIRE

Benefits from Mateo trade Machin appears to have even greater job security with the trade of Jorge Mateo to the Padres on Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Impact Machin's quest to go from Rule 5 pick to a potential Opening Day roster spot received a boost with the move of Mateo, with whom he was in a heated battle when spring training was suspended. Mateo's elite speed notwithstanding, Machin arguably had pulled even with him by hitting .333 over 15 Cactus League games and demonstrating an ability to fill in all over the infield. The easing of a logjam at second base via the trade -- where Franklin Barreto and Tony Kemp still project to primarily split time -- appears to leave Machin with solid job security entering summer camp, especially with rosters expanded to 30 players for the first two weeks of the regular season.

JULY 1, 2020 • ROTOWIRE

Projected for Opening Day roster Machin is projected by Mark Saxon of The Athletic to make the expanded Opening Day roster.

Impact Machin was trending toward being one of the team's final cuts, if not snagging the 26th and final roster spot outright, when spring training was suspended. With teams allowed 30-man rosters for the first two weeks of the campaign, the versatile 26-year-old now has exponentially more job security in Saxon's view. Machin is lauded for both his glove and sharp eye at the plate, with both on display during Cactus League play earlier this spring.
