McClanahan and Aranda power the Rays to a 5-2 victory over the Angels
Shane McClanahan pitched one-run ball for five innings, Jonathan Aranda homered and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-2

On bench Wednesday
Mesa is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Mesa will head to the bench after he went 2-for-8 with a home run and a walk over the first two games of the series in Baltimore. While Ryan Vilade will get the nod in right field Wednesday against Orioles righty Trey Gibson, the left-handed-hitting Mesa is the better bet to see the bulk of the starts versus righties while he's up with the big club.

Getting start versus righty
Mesa will start in right field and bat seventh in Monday's game versus the Orioles.
Impact
With Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) likely sidelined until after the All-star break, Mesa could get some run in right field against right-handed pitching. The 24-year-old has slashed .329/.420/.543 with two home runs and one stolen base over 18 contests at Triple-A Durham this season.

Called up by Tampa Bay
The Rays recalled Mesa from Triple-A Durham on Sunday.
Impact
Mesa was scratched from Durham's game Friday in anticipation that he would be called up by the Rays, and that is indeed the case after the big club placed Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list. In DeLuca's absence, Mesa should see a fair amount of starts in the outfield, especially against right-handed pitching. Mesa appeared in 16 regular-season games for the Marlins in 2025, when he posted a .641 OPS with one home run and six RBI across 38 plate appearances.

Promotion coming Saturday
Mesa is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Impact
Mesa was removed early from his game at Durham on Friday and is reportedly on his way to join the big club in New York. It's unclear who he'll be replacing on the active roster, though it's worth noting that Jonny DeLuca was taken out of Friday's contest against the Yankees with a lower-body injury. Mesa has slashed .318/.416/.545 with two homers, seven RBI and 12 runs scored across 77 plate appearances at Triple-A this season.

Sent to minor-league camp
The Rays optioned Mesa to minor-league camp Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
The Rays acquired Mesa just before spring training, but he never had much of a chance to make the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old outfielder went 2-for-5 at the plate during his limited opportunities during Cactus League play.

Ready for spring debut
Mesa (hamstring) will make his Grapefruit League debut Sunday against Atlanta, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
The 24-year-old has apparently been dealing with a hamstring injury but is ready for spring action Sunday. The Rays acquired Mesa from the Marlins in early February, and he's likely to serve as organizational outfield depth and open 2026 at Triple-A Durham.

Claimed by Rays
The Rays claimed Mesa off waivers from the Marlins on Friday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
Impact
Mesa made his big-league debut in 2025, appearing in 16 games with the Marlins and slashing .188/.297/.344 across 38 plate appearances. The 24-year-old had a strong .887 OPS across 171 plate appearances at Triple-A Jacksonville in 2025. The young outfielder will look to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

DFA'd by Miami
The Marlins designated Mesa for assignment Tuesday.
Impact
The 24-year-old received his first taste of the big leagues in 2025 but struggled in 16 games, going 6-for-32 (.188 average) with one home run and a 5:5 BB:K. Mesa had a .303/.374/.513 slash line across 42 Triple-A games and could generate some interest on the waiver wire.

Optioned to Triple-A
Mesa was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday.
Impact
Mesa will return to Jacksonville after being called up Aug. 31, batting .200 with one home run, five RBI and six runs scored over 25 at-bats in 12 contests following his promotion. The transaction makes room for Dane Myers (oblique) on the 28-man roster after Myers was activated from the 10-day injured list Monday.

Getting regular looks versus RHPs
Mesa will start in left field and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Impact
The left-handed-hitting Mesa was on the bench against Mets right-hander Kodai Senga in his first game with the Marlins after being recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Aug. 31, but the young outfielder has now cracked the lineup for five straight matchups with righties. Since his call-up, Mesa has gone 5-for-15 with a home run, two doubles, five RBI and four runs. At least until Kyle Stowers (oblique) and/or Griffin Conine (shoulder) potentially return from the injured list, Mesa should continue to hold down a regular spot in the lineup versus righties.

Launches first long ball
Mesa went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, three RBI and an additional run scored in Monday's 15-7 loss to the Nationals.
Impact
The Miami rookie cracked a 394-foot, three-run homer off Washington reliever Shinnosuke Ogasawara in the eighth. Mesa had flashed marginal power in Triple-A this season prior to his promotion, popping six long balls in 143 plate appearances. The 24-year-old has been drawing occasional starts at the bottom of the lineup since being recalled Aug. 31, as he's hit .238 (5-for-21) with four RBI and four runs scored.

Called up Sunday
The Marlins recalled Mesa from Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday.
Impact
The 23-year-old will join the Marlins for the second time this season, taking the roster spot of Dane Myers (oblique), who was placed on the injured list. Mesa appeared in just four games during his first MLB stint in May, going 1-for-7 with two walks in four games. He could receive consistent playing time down the stretch with Miami likely looking to evaluate talent heading into 2026.

Dispatched to Triple-A
The Marlins optioned Mesa to Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday.
Impact
In four games since earning his first MLB call-up, Mesa went 1-for-7 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored. With Xavier Edwards (back) now back from the injured list, Mesa will end up as the roster casualty necessary to create room on the 26-man. However, he could certainly end up back in Miami before the end of the season if his excellent play at Triple-A (1.025 OPS) continues.

Collects first MLB hit
Mesa went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Tuesday's loss to the Padres.
Impact
Making his first career start in the majors, Mesa battled Stephen Kolek to a full count in his first plate appearance before pulling an RBI single into right field in the first inning. The 23-year-old switch hitter got the start in center field and hit eighth for the Marlins in his debut, and with Derek Hill (wrist) and Dane Myers (oblique) both on the injured list at least into early June, Mesa could see regular playing time in the short term before he'll be in danger of getting returned to Triple-A Jacksonville.
