Optioned to Triple-A The Marlins optioned Mesa (hamstring) to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact They also reassigned Justin King (adductor), Woo-Suk Go (finger), Freddy Tarnok (ankle), Ryan Ignoffo and Jakob Marsee (oblique) to minor-league camp. All but Ignoffo are currently injured and there are fewer reps to go around in Marlins camp. Mesa is dealing with a right hamstring strain and is expected to be sidelined for at least another week or two.

Facing multi-week absence Mesa was diagnosed with a mild right hamstring strain Sunday and is expected to be sidelined 3-to-4 weeks, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Impact The 23-year-old reported tightness in the hamstring Saturday and will now be unavailable for at least the next few weeks. Mesa's injury will make it difficult for him to earn a spot on Miami's Opening Day roster, which is especially notable since he's out of minor-league options.

The 23-year-old outfielder reached Triple-A for the first time last season, where he slashed .259/.319/.430 with 13 home runs, 51 RBI and five stolen bases across 355 plate appearances, but he has an outside chance to break camp with the big-league squad.

Could win MLB job this spring Mesa is out of minor-league options and will get a chance to win a spot on the 26-man roster this spring, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Signed out of Cuba as a 17-year-old back in 2018, Mesa didn't show signs of emerging as a viable big-leaguer until 2023 at Double-A Pensacola, and he built on that performance last year with Triple-A Jacksonville, slashing .259/.319/.430 with 13 home runs in 80 games. More importantly, he continued to display palatable plate discipline, posting a 21.7 percent mark for Jacksonville against a 7.9 percent walk rate. While the Marlins' current front office doesn't have anything invested in Mesa as a prospect, he has the potential to be the team's best current option in center field ahead of the likes of Dane Myers and Derek Hill, who both profile better as fourth outfielders and bench players. If Mesa can flash his upside this spring, Miami would have little to lose by giving him a long look.

Receives 40-man spot The Marlins added Mesa to their 40-man roster Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Mesa spent all of 2023 with Double-A Pensacola, slashing .241/.307/.411 with 18 homers and 76 RBI. The 22-year-old outfielder is no longer able to be taken in the Rule 5 Draft in December, and he could receive a bump to Triple-A Jacksonville in '24.
