In Friday's lineup for Simpson
Mesa will start in left field and bat sixth against the Astros on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Chandler Simpson was initially slated to start in right field but was scratched from Friday's lineup due to sore right index and middle fingers, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Mesa will now start in right field while Cedric Mullins and Jonny DeLuca man center and left, respectively.

Sitting Friday
Mesa is not in the Rays' starting lineup against the Astros on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Even with right-hander Spencer Arrighetti on the mound for the Astros, the lefty-hitting Mesa will be on the bench for Friday's series opener while Jonny DeLuca, Cedric Mullins and Chandler Simpson start in the outfield from left to right. Mesa is slashing .188/.282/.333 with one steal, three home runs and eight RBI across 79 plate appearances this season.

Claiming fourth straight start
Mesa will start in right field and bat cleanup Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Impact
Though he appeared to be at risk of seeing a steep reduction in playing time after Jonny DeLuca returned from the injured list June 19, Mesa seems to be holding steady as a strong-side platoon player in the Tampa Bay outfield. Mesa will be included in the starting nine for a fourth straight matchup versus a right-hander (Merrill Kelly) after going 3-for-10 with a home run, a double, a walk, three RBI and two runs in the previous three contests.

Idle against lefty
Mesa is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals.
Impact
The left-handed-hitting Mesa will hit the bench for the second time in the series, with his absence from the lineup Sunday coming while the Nationals send southpaw Andrew Alvarez to the hill. The 24-year-old outfielder could struggle to find consistent playing time versus righties as well, after the Rays brought Jonny DeLuca back from the injured list Friday. Despite logging just nine of his 55 plate appearances against same-handed pitching since his May 24 call-up from Triple-A Durham, Mesa is slashing just .174/.296/.304 with two home runs, sevens runs and five RBI.

Launches two-run homer in win
Mesa went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, an additional run scored and a walk in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Angels.
Impact
Mesa extended the Rays' lead to 8-3 with a 107.1 mph, two-run shot as part of a five-run eighth inning. Sunday marked the outfielder's first multi-hit effort of the season and his first homer since his season debut May 25. With most of his action coming against right-handed pitching, the 24-year-old is slashing .200/.319/.350 with two homers, five RBI and six runs scored across 48 plate appearances.

Idle again Wednesday
Mesa is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports.
Impact
The left-handed-hitting Mesa will remain on the bench for the third time in as many days while the Rays have faced off against left-handed starting pitchers in all three games of their series with the Red Sox. The Rays will go with Austin Slater in right field in place of Mesa, who is batting just .176 with one home run, three RBI and four runs in 12 games for Tampa Bay since being promoted from Triple-A Durham on May 24.

On bench against southpaw
Mesa is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports.
Impact
With southpaw Connelly Early on the bump for the Red Sox, the left-handed-hitting Mesa will retreat to the bench. While the Rays faced right-handed starters in each of the last seven games, Mesa was included in the lineup for six of those contests and went 3-for-22 (.136 average) with a 3:8 BB:K, two runs and one RBI during that time.

On bench Wednesday
Mesa is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact
Mesa will head to the bench after he went 2-for-8 with a home run and a walk over the first two games of the series in Baltimore. While Ryan Vilade will get the nod in right field Wednesday against Orioles righty Trey Gibson, the left-handed-hitting Mesa is the better bet to see the bulk of the starts versus righties while he's up with the big club.

Getting start versus righty
Mesa will start in right field and bat seventh in Monday's game versus the Orioles.
Impact
With Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) likely sidelined until after the All-star break, Mesa could get some run in right field against right-handed pitching. The 24-year-old has slashed .329/.420/.543 with two home runs and one stolen base over 18 contests at Triple-A Durham this season.

Called up by Tampa Bay
The Rays recalled Mesa from Triple-A Durham on Sunday.
Impact
Mesa was scratched from Durham's game Friday in anticipation that he would be called up by the Rays, and that is indeed the case after the big club placed Jonny DeLuca (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list. In DeLuca's absence, Mesa should see a fair amount of starts in the outfield, especially against right-handed pitching. Mesa appeared in 16 regular-season games for the Marlins in 2025, when he posted a .641 OPS with one home run and six RBI across 38 plate appearances.
