Wins again Friday
Megill (2-0) earned the win over the Blue Jays on Friday, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four over 5.1 shutout innings.
Impact
Megill has been strong to begin the season, giving up one run on five hits and four walks over his first 10.1 innings. He's also racked up 10 strikeouts. He threw 48 of 82 pitches for strikes in his second start of the campaign, and he racked up nine whiffs. His fastball was back down to an average of 95.3 mph, just a little under his 2024 season average and 1.1 mph less than his season debut. The right-hander is tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Marlins next week.

Six strikeouts in win
Megill (1-0) came away with the win Friday against the Astros after allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six batters in five innings.
Impact
Megill took a perfect game into the fourth inning Friday, but a quick pair of singles and a sacrifice fly from Yordan Alvarez gave Houston what would ultimately be their only run of the day. Megill needed 77 pitches to get through his five innings and averaged 96.4 mph on his 39 fastballs, which is a tick up from the 95.5 mph he sat at last season. Overall, it was a very good showing from the 29-year-old righty, and he'll get a chance to build on it during the Mets' first home series next week against the Jays.

Officially makes rotation
Megill has been awarded a spot in the Mets' rotation, and he'll start the team's second game of the season March 28 against Houston, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Megill's spot in the rotation was a foregone conclusion with Sean Manaea (oblique) and Frankie Montas (lat) out for the beginning of the campaign. Megill solidified the decision with a strong spring during which he posted a 4.24 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB over 17 innings. Clay Holmes has been named New York's Opening Day starter, and he'll be followed in the rotation by Megill, Griffin Canning, David Peterson and Kodai Senga.

Could start second game of season
Megill is expected to start the second game of the Mets' season-opening series in Houston, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
Impact
That would line the right-hander up to face the Astros on March 28 after Clay Holmes gets the nod Opening Day, with Griffin Canning, David Peterson and Kodai Senga following in the rotation. Megill has looked good this spring, posting a 13:2 K:BB over 11.2 innings, and he should get a few turns through the rotation to establish himself as a reliable option with Sean Manaea (oblique) not set to return until at least mid-April, and Frankie Montas (lat) on the shelf into May.

Sharp in Tuesday's outing
Megill gave up two hits and a walk over four scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out five.
Impact
The 29-year-old right-hander was essentially gifted a rotation spot to begin the season when Sean Manaea (oblique) and Frankie Montas (lat) went down with injuries, but Megill has earned the assignment so far this spring with a 1.35 ERA and 7:2 K:BB over 6.2 innings. He's always had intriguing stuff, highlighted by a 27.0 percent strikeout rate over 78 regular-season innings in the majors last year, but to this point in his career a true breakout has eluded him.

Rotation spot more secure
Megill appears likely to have a spot in the Opening Day rotation if Sean Manaea (oblique) begins the season on the injured list, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Frankie Montas (lat) was already expected to be sidelined into May, so the Mets' rotation depth is being tested early. Kodai Senga, Clay Holmes and David Peterson are the only locks for starting jobs right now, with Megill, Griffin Canning and Paul Blackburn (back) competing for the remaining spots, but if New York sticks with its plan to use a six-man rotation, there would be room for all three. The Mets have three off days in the first 15 days of their schedule however, so they could delay those plans until mid-April.

Building up quickly
Megill entered camp further along than most Mets starters and was slated to throw three innings of live batting practice this week, Andrew Tredinnick of NorthJersey.com reports.
Impact
He already threw two innings in a live batting practice session, and is ahead of Paul Blackburn (back) and Griffin Canning, the two other starters Megill is competing with for the final two spots in the Mets' six-man rotation. Once the trio starts pitching in games this spring, their performance will take precedence over who got built up quickest in camp, but it's at least good to know Megill is healthy and throwing. His goal this season is to trust his stuff and attack hitters in the zone more in order to keep his pitch count low after going six-plus innings in just four of his 15 starts in 2024.

Will stretch out this spring
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Megill will be stretched out as a starting pitcher this spring, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Impact
Megill would appear to be on the outside looking for a rotation spot if the Mets go with a traditional five-man setup, but it makes sense to keep him stretched out this spring. The righty could eventually shift to a relief role, although he does have minor-league options left so Megill could also open the season in the Triple-A Syracuse rotation.

Settles with New York
The Mets and Megill avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract Thursday.
Impact
He had been eligible for arbitration for the first time. Megill put up a 27 percent strikeout rate in 16 appearances (15 starts) with the Mets in 2024 but might have to settle for a bullpen job to open 2025.
