Gives up run in Game 1 Rosenthal gave up one run in a non-save situation Wednesday in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Cardinals.

Impact The Padres used eight pitchers and Rosenthal and Chris Paddack were the only ones to give up runs, but as Paddack gave up six runs in 2.1 innings, the Cardinals still won 7-4. Rosenthal walked two and then gave up a single to Dexter Fowler that scored Paul DeJong. He should be available for Thursday's must-win Game 2.

Impact Rosenthal couldn't protect a one-run lead in the 10th inning, but the Padres gave him a three-run cushion in the 11th, and he was able to keep it clean in his second inning to get his first win as a Friar. He has yet to allow an earned run in seven outings with the Padres, and this was the righty's first blown save in 11 chances overall in 2020.

Impact Rosenthal wasn't needed in the more lopsided Game 1, but he was able to protect a 3-1 lead in the nightcap. He's pitched five scoreless innings since joining the Padres at the trade deadline, racking up three saves and eight strikeouts while allowing only three baserunners in that span. Rosenthal's strong work should keep him locked into the closing role for awhile -- Drew Pomeranz picked up a hold with a scoreless sixth inning in Sunday's second contest.

He now has nine saves on the season and both of San Diego's opportunities since being acquired by the team at the trade deadline. Rosenthal should continue to see save chances, though Drew Pomeranz and Emilio Pagan (biceps) could also factor into the closer conversation before the conclusion of the campaign.

It's his eighth save of the year and first as a Padre after he was traded from the Royals at the trade deadline. Rosenthal has a 2.70 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 26 strikeouts through 16.2 innings this year across 17 appearances. Drew Pomeranz, who is also in the closer conversation, allowed a walk and struck out two while pitching a scoreless eighth inning for a hold Sunday.
