Braves catcher Travis d'Arnaud details road to returning from concussion He has had a history of concussions, sustaining the most recent one April 8.
MAY 9, 2023 • AJC.COM
Not in lineup Tuesday D'Arnaud is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Impact D'Arnaud will be a bench option for Atlanta in his first game back from the concussion IL. He was drawing everyday starts between catcher and designated hitter prior to the head injury, but the NL East leaders will apparently ease him back into the fold.
MAY 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Returns from injured list D'Arnaud was activated from the 7-day concussion injured list by Atlanta on Monday.
Impact D'Arnaud wound up missing about a month of action after suffering a concussion. He was hitless in three rehab games but, more importantly, is feeling healthy and is ready to reclaim his spot on the team with the National League's best record. Marcell Ozuna is finally showing signs of life lately, but d'Arnaud should see plenty of action in the designated hitter spot and also catch a couple times per week.

MAY 6, 2023 • AJC.COM
Beginning rehab assignment D'Arnaud (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.
Impact At last check, d'Arnaud was still awaiting full clearance from doctors to play in games. Evidently he has received it. The veteran catcher has missed nearly a month of action with concussion symptoms but should be ready for activation after knocking the rust off with a few rehab games.
MAY 5, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Still waiting on clearance D'Arnaud ran the bases Monday for the second time since landing on the 7-day injured list April 9, and he remains hopeful to be activated within the next week or so, David O'Brien...
Impact Though d'Arnaud is traveling with Atlanta and has been taking batting practice for more than a week in addition to the running work, as his comments imply, a decision on when he'll be activated isn't up to him. Atlanta isn't putting any official timeline on d'Arnaud's return, which won't happen until doctors determine he's symptom-free and able to compete at full exertion. The concussion that d'Arnaud sustained April 8 during a play at the plate is the fourth diagnosed brain injury of his career, though the first he's suffered since 2014. Once activated, d'Arnaud will be the top understudy to catcher Sean Murphy, though d'Arnaud should see at least a handful of starts per week as a designated hitter or when Murphy requires a day off behind the plate.
MAY 2, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Taking batting practice D'Arnaud (concussion) is traveling with Atlanta and taking regular batting practice, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Impact There remains no estimated timetable for his activation from the concussion IL, but d'Arnaud continues to take positive steps forward. He's been on the shelf since April 9 and figures to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment at some point because of the growing length of his absence.
APRIL 28, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Gets back behind plate Sunday D'Arnaud (concussion) took part in more hitting work and caught a bullpen session Sunday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact The 34-year-old backstop continues to make incremental progress in his recovery from a concussion, as Sunday marked the first time since landing on the injured list that he took part in any catching work. Once d'Arnaud is able to complete a full range of baseball activities, Atlanta will have to decide whether he's fit to immediately return to the 26-man active roster or if he'll require a brief rehab assignment beforehand. Sean Murphy is locked in as Atlanta's No. 1 catcher, but d'Arnaud should see fairly consistent playing time either behind the plate or as a designated hitter once he's reinstated from the IL.
APRIL 24, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Begins baseball activities D'Arnaud (concussion) hit in the batting cage Friday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact D'Arnaud is back to doing baseball activities 11 days after being placed on the 7-day concussion injured list. If all goes well from this point forward, the 34-year-old could feasibly return to Atlanta's active roster sometime early next week. He was off to an 11-for-33 start (.333) prior to the injury and had been starting pretty much every day between DH and catcher.
APRIL 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Not doing much baseball activity Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Saturday that d'Arnaud (concussion) still isn't doing much in terms of baseball activities, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution re...
Impact D'Arnaud is nearly a full week removed from landing on the 7-day concussion IL, but it's at least the fourth concussion he has suffered in his playing career and so it's likely to continue to be a slow-moving recovery process. The 34-year-old had gone 11-for-33 (.333) out of the gate this season for the reigning NL East champs.
APRIL 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Feeling better Tuesday Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Tuesday that d'Arnaud (concussion) is "feeling better," Grant McAuley of 929 The Game reports.
Impact D'Arnaud was placed on the 7-day injured list Sunday after suffering a concussion Saturday on a collision at home plate. There's still no timetable for his return, but he's at least making some semblance of progress. The 34-year-old had gotten off to a solid 11-for-33 (.333) start this season while playing nearly every day between designated hitter and catcher.

Braves place d'Arnaud on 7-day injured list with concussion

Braves catcher Travis d’Arnaud has been placed on the seven-day injured list after sustaining a concussion in a collision at the plate
APRIL 9, 2023 • Associated Press
Goes on 7-day IL Atlanta placed d'Arnaud (concussion) on the 7-day injured list Sunday.
Impact Chadwick Tromp was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace d'Arnaud as the No. 2 catcher behind Sean Murphy. Despite entering the season in a projected backup role, d'Arnaud had played on a near-everyday basis while moving between catcher and designated hitter, slashing .333/.333/.424 while starting in all but one of Atlanta's first nine games. While d'Arnaud is sidelined for the next week, Murphy will see an even larger share of the reps behind the dish, and Marcell Ozuna should also occupy the DH spot on a near-everyday basis.
APRIL 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Expected to go on concussion IL Atlanta manager Brian Snitker told reporters after Saturday's loss to the Padres that d'Arnaud is expected to go on the 7-day concussion IL, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Impact The concussion occurred after d'Arnaud collided with Rougned Odor at home plate. The 34-year-old backstop will miss at least a week while recovering, but there's no guarantee he'll be ready to return in that timeframe. Sean Murphy will see the majority of playing time behind the plate while he recovers.

Wacha has 10 Ks, Soto hits homer, as Padres beat Braves, 4-1

Right-hander Michael Wacha matched his career high with 10 strikeouts in six scoreless innings, Juan Soto homered and the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1

Braves remove Travis d'Arnaud from game after collision at home plate The Braves removed catcher Travis d’Arnaud from the game shortly after a scary collision at home plate Saturday night at Truist Park.
APRIL 9, 2023 • AJC.COM
Leaves with potential injury D'Arnaud left Saturday's game against the Padres with a potential injury, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Impact The backstop was involved with two collisions at home plate and replaced by Sean Murphy. Atlanta hasn't given an update on d'Arnaud's condition as of yet, and it's likely due to the 34-year-old undergoing tests.
APRIL 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Gets day off Friday D'Arnaud is out of the lineup Friday against the Padres.
Impact It's the first day off of the season for d'Arnaud, who had hit cleanup out of the DH spot in four consecutive games. Marcell Ozuna will DH and bat eighth Friday versus the Padres and right-hander Nick Martinez. Sean Murphy is catching and hitting fifth.
APRIL 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Hitting cleanup again Thursday D'Arnaud will DH and bat cleanup Thursday night against the Padres.
Impact It's the fourth straight start out of the No. 4 spot in the order for d'Arnaud, who has gone 10-for-26 (.385) with an .885 OPS through six total games this season. He'll likely continue to get everyday playing time -- whether at DH or catcher -- while he's carrying such a hot bat. Sean Murphy is behind the plate and hitting sixth Thursday versus the Padres and left-hander Blake Snell.
APRIL 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Keeps raking Tuesday D'Arnaud went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals.
Impact Atlanta manager Brian Snikter has had little choice but to make d'Arnaud an everyday player in the early going, as the veteran catcher has hits in five straight games while batting .455 (10-for-22) with three doubles, three runs and four RBI. The 34-year-old will need some rest eventually, whether he cools down at the plate or not, but he's started three of his five games at DH so far and should see consistent playing time at the position even as Sean Murphy handles the majority of the start behind the plate.
APRIL 5, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Another start at cleanup D'Arnaud will DH and bat cleanup for Atlanta on Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Impact It's the second straight start out of the cleanup spot for d'Arnaud, who has gone 7-for-18 (.389) with two doubles and four RBI through four games while shifting between DH and catching duties. Sean Murphy is behind the plate and hitting seventh Tuesday versus the Cardinals and left-hander Steven Matz.
APRIL 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Making fourth straight start D'Arnaud is starting at catcher and batting cleanup for Atlanta's game Monday versus the Cardinals.
Impact D'Arnaud is doubling up Sean Murphy in regards to playing time in the early going, making two starts at catcher and two at designated hitter while Murphy has started just twice behind the plate. It's a playing time breakdown not likely to continue, as manager Brian Snitker seemingly is just riding d'Arnaud while he's off to a 6-for-13 start.

Braves play the Nationals after d'Arnaud's 4-hit game

The Atlanta Braves play the Washington Nationals after Travis d'Arnaud's four-hit game on Thursday
APRIL 1, 2023 • Associated Press
Delivers four hits in opener D'Arnaud went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in Atlanta's season-opening victory Thursday against the Nationals.
Impact Serving as the DH and batting eighth, d'Arnaud rattled off three singles and a double to help Atlanta turn the lineup over versus Patrick Corbin and the Nats' bullpen. The 34-year-old won't be called on to catch as much in 2023 behind newcomer Sean Murphy, but he should get regular looks out of the designated hitter role -- especially versus lefties.
