Mitch Haniger, Dylan Moore and Tom Murphy homered, Seattle’s bullpen earned its ninth win this season and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-4

Breaks extended slump
Murphy, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run in a loss to the Red Sox on Sunday, was 0-for-17 with a walk and two runs over the previous six games.
Impact
The veteran backstop's season slash sits at an anemic .128/.171/.231 across 41 plate appearances heading into Monday night's series opener against the Astros. Murphy has just two total extra-base hits when factoring in Sunday's double as well, but his 41.7 percent hard hit rate and atypically low .174 BABIP imply the hits could start falling more often as the season unfolds. The saving grace for Murphy and his fantasy managers at the moment is that platoon mate Luis Torrens isn't offering much more with his bat, posting a .176/.236/.216 line in his own right across 55 PAs.

Launches first homer
Murphy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 4-3 win over the Orioles in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Impact
He took John Means deep in the second inning for his first homer of the year. Murphy has had a sluggish start to the year and ceded playing time to Luis Torrens in the process, but he appears to be turning things around at the plate, going 4-for-13 over his last four games.

Being outpaced by Torrens
Murphy, who went 0-for-5 in a win over the Twins on Sunday, is now sporting a .188 average that pales in comparison to platoon mate Luis Torrens' .333 figure.
Impact
Murphy and Torrens -- the latter filling the designated hitter spot -- were actually both in the lineup Sunday, marking the second time they've both made appearances in the same game thus far. While Torrens delivered his second multi-hit effort in three games, Murphy generated his third hitless performance in five 2021 contests. It's early and the sample size is small, but the disparity between the two position mates is at least worth keeping an eye on with respect to how playing time between them behind the dish may be affected as the season unfolds.

On bench again Saturday
Murphy will sit Saturday against San Francisco.
Impact
Murphy started behind the plate on Opening Day but has since gone on to sit twice in a row. Luis Torrens will make his second straight start in his absence.

Heads to bench
Murphy is not in the lineup Friday against the Giants.
Impact
Murphy started Thursday's season opener but will cede the catcher spot to Luis Torrens in the second game of the season. it may take some time to determine the exact playing-time breakdown between those two, though the fact that Murphy is already sitting for game two may indicate a fairly even split.

First homer of spring
Murphy, starting at designated hitter for the second straight game, went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, a walk and two runs overall in a Cactus League win over the Royals on Tues...
Impact
The veteran backstop has ceded duties behind the dish to Luis Torrens the last two games while Murphy finishes recovering from a minor hip issue. The round tripper, part of a 15-hit barrage for Seattle, helped boost Murphy's spring average back over the Mendoza Line and marked his first time leaving the yard in exhibition play.

Back in action
Murphy (hip) will return to the lineup Monday against Arizona, batting fourth and serving as the designated hitter.
Impact
Murphy was scratched Sunday with what was later revealed to be a hip issue. While it may take a few more days for him to get back behind the plate, his readiness for Opening Day doesn't appear to be threatened.

Pulled from Sunday's lineup
Murphy was scratched from Sunday's spring game against the Brewers, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact
No injury has been announced, so it's unclear if it's just a late lineup change of if the 29-year-old is dealing with some sort of issue. Luis Torrens will start in his place and will benefit should Murphy be forced to miss any real time.

Slow start at plate
Murphy, who missed all of 2020 due to a foot injury, is 1-for-11 with a walk and four strikeouts across his first five Cactus League games.
Impact
The veteran backstop understandably has some rust to shed after last seeing seeing game action during the early stages of last year's summer camp. Murphy is projected to fill the slightly longer side of a platoon behind the dish alongside Luis Torrens, with the former initially expected to log a bit more than half the playing time at catcher.

Workload to be monitored early
Murphy, who missed all of the 2020 season with a broken bone in his foot, is fully recovered but will have his workload closely monitored, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The veteran backstop was a pleasant surprise for the Mariners back in 2019, putting up career highs in doubles (12), home runs (18), RBI (40), walks (19) and runs (32) while slashing .273/.324/.535 across 281 plate appearances. There were consequently high hopes for Murphy heading into 2020, but a fracture suffered after fouling a ball off his foot multiple times during summer camp led to the lost season. Luis Torrens (back), acquired from the Padres at last year's trade deadline, impressed over his brief time with the Mariners and is also expected to receive a solid amount of playing time behind the dish in the coming campaign.

Comes to terms with Seattle
Murphy signed a one-year, $875,000 contract with the Mariners on Friday to avoid arbitration.
Impact
The 29-year-old was expected to start behind the plate for Seattle in 2020, but he missed the entirety of the season after fracturing his foot in July. Murphy is expected to work in a timeshare at catcher with Luis Torrens in 2021.

Murphy is fully healed from his foot injury and participating in full workouts, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact
Murphy missed the entire 2020 season due to a lingering foot injury, but he's fully recovered and will be ready to participate in spring training. The 29-year-old is expected to operate in a timeshare with Luis Torrens in 2021 since Torrens performed well after being acquired by the Mariners at the trade deadline last year.

Faces setback
Murphy's ankle isn't responding to treatment, which could impact his availability for Opening Day, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact
Murphy was limited during camp after fouling two balls off his foot, and he could miss time to begin the regular season since his ankle isn't responding to treatment as the team had hoped. If the 29-year-old is unable to suit up for Opening Day, Austin Nola will likely serve as the primary catcher, with Joe Hudson or a current free agent as a potential backup.

Possible 2020 playing time
O'Keefe is benefiting from plenty of instructional time during summer camp, and the possibility exists he could see some action at the big-league level in 2020, Greg Johns of MLB.c...
Impact
O'Keefe has yet to play above Double-A despite the fact he's 26 years old, although he does have a trio of double-digit home-run tallies on his minors resume. The Rule 5 pick out of the Cardinals organization appeared in 10 Cactus League games but logged only nine at-bats, hitting .222 with two RBI, two walks and two runs. While Tom Murphy and Austin Nola are set to handle most of the catching reps this season, Johns points out both may need reinforcement at some point -- Murphy has already missed time during summer camp twice due to fouling a ball off his foot and has started a relatively modest 110 games across his first five big-league seasons, while Nola has only four games of experience behind the dish.
